ATEME ENABLES WINTER GAMES TRANSMISSION OF INDUSTRY FIRST NEXT GEN TV BROADCAST

ATEME has announced that WRAL-TV, NBC Universal and NAB has selected its TITAN compression solution to help enable the first ever public demonstration of the ATSC 3.0 broadcast television standard.

The broadcasting and technology partners worked together to deliver the Winter Games from PyeongChang to an audience at an event at North Carolina State University, in stunning 4K ultra high definition video. Marking the first over-the-air broadcast of the new Dolby AC4 format, the transmission used LDM (Layer Division Multiplexing) technology and new interactive applications to enhance the TV experience for viewers.

“This transmission is a fantastic demonstration of the new broadcast television standard, and we’re thrilled to have been involved in such a pioneering project,” said Walid Hamri, VP of Solutions and Business Development at ATEME. “ATSC 3.0 represents the future of technology in this industry, and our TITAN compression solution utilized in this Winter Games presentation is helping to offer the ultimate new viewing experience.”

The demonstration featured many benefits that are not possible with the current broadcast standard. NBC provided the 4K UHD feed featuring high dynamic range and wide color gamut to provide a stunning view of the games and the new Dolby AC4 provided compelling audio. Three applications were developed using HTML5 and combined broadcast and broadband content to provide an interactive program guide, video on demand content plus user customizable and up-to-the-minute statistics, athlete profiles and country specific information.

“We’re proud to work with our network, our technology partners and NAB to showcase ATSC 3.0 as the future of television,” said Jimmy Goodmon, President and COO of Capitol Broadcasting Company. “Our company’s 80-year legacy is rooted in serving our community using technology to innovate our coverage. Next Gen TV is the new frontier. We are excited about the possibilities.”

ATEME’s TITAN is a virtualized software-based encoder-transcoder, designed for DTT, DTH and OTT. It supports HEVC, H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs for mobile to 4K UHD resolutions such as this and delivers the highest video quality at minimum bitrates.
