LBU Chooses Quicklink ST100 Live HD Codec from CJP Broadcast

CJP Broadcast announces the supply and integration of a Quicklink ST100 ultra-low latency bi-directional live HD codec to the Leeds Beckett University TV Studio. It will be used primarily to provide experience in online remote interviewing between commentators in separated studios or with IP-linked contributors.

"As part of a requirement from the accrediting body for our BA Journalism course, we needed to include live video calls in our TV news,\" comments LBU Media & Communications lecturer Chian Gatewood. "Skype TX seemed like a great way to achieve this as we can use a platform that is well known in the industry and incorporate it into our existing broadcast playout system. We chose the ST100 as an interface with our Broadcast Pix Flint 500 production switcher. The CJP engineering team were very detailed in the job and completed the installation within their specified time period. The unit is fantastic and very easily controlled via a standard web browser. Signal quality is obviously reliant on the end user's internet capacity so a strong wi-fi or hard-wired connection is needed to ensure good quality."

"Having worked extensively for customers in the university sector over the years, we were delighted to be selected by Chian and her colleagues to partner with them on this project,\" adds CJP Broadcast Managing Director Chris Phillips. "The technical facilities at LBU accurately reflect the real world of journalism and news production, forming an ideal springboard for anyone aspiring to a media-related career. The ST100 itself represents the state of the art in IP-based video and audio links, combining versatility, high signal quality and robust build at an impressively affordable price."

The Quicklink ST100 is a single-channel codec for use in any point-to-point broadcast solution where ultra-low latency and high quality video and audio links are required. Developed in co-operation with Microsoft, which owns and operates the Skype TX platform, it provides a low-latency two-way main video and audio feed plus a talkback channel. Intended for use in HD-SDI, HDMI and NDI operating environments, the codec is designed to perform simultaneous video and audio encoding and decoding in any commonly used video standard up to up to 1080p50 or 1080p60 at a data rate of up to 30 megabits per second. Suitable for point-to-point or relay applications, it uses an H.265/HEVC equivalent signal format and supports HD-SDI, HDMI plus IP inputs and outputs. XLR analogue, AES digital and AES67 IP audio are supported. The ST100 can be deployed on private or public networks and can perform automatic failover between network connections. Automatic link recovery is performed in the event of a power outage.
