Fact from Fiction - IP transport
Bruce Devlin Wandering around the endless corridors of NAB in 2016, you'll hear much more talk of IP transport than in previous years. If you're lucky then you'll see a few GUIs that might show Software Defined Network (SDN) routings or channel allocations. You might see a GUI that shows the flows of essence, grains, packets or other networked "stuff". If you're really eagle eyed then you might even see some hardware. Yes, that's right hardware - remember the metal boxes that we used to have to supply with electricity and the hook up in the days before cloud? I am certain that there is real hardware to be seen out there.

Leaving Las Vegas
John Smith I've had the privilege of being a regular visitor and exhibitor at NAB since the early 1980's. One memorable occasion, our flight home had been overbooked and so an alternative arrangement was made. We wondered why it would take four hours to fly from Vegas to LA? As the pilot turned up in full leather flying gear, including goggles and 20 Sony dealer principals and staff were loaded on to a crop sprayer it became clearer! The request-stop service ended up picking-up and dropping-off additional passengers en-route, however, flying low across the desert offered some of the most stunning views of scenery I've ever seen!

The World Of Risk
Leighton Chenery Risk was again the topic of the day. From Brexit to China's debt issues, from migration to food shortage, oil price to climate change, the discussion and debates around the halls centre around how to solve the important issues that threaten the stability of our economies and world security.

Recreating a Masterpiece
Stuart Harris Tell us a bit about yourself Stuart. At the moment I am the acting head of cinematography here at the National Film and Television School. I have been a cinematographer from around 1980 and I have done commercials, music videos, feature films, sort of everything really. I think a creative career was what I wanted to do and I found myself doing lots and lots of commercials which I really enjoy doing and music videos which I also love as well. But we're all storytellers and I don't think at the end of the day whether the film or the card in the camera knows what you're shooting it is what you put on there, that's the most important thing.

Camera Operations (part 2)
Peter Leverick In Part 1 (issue 110) I addressed the practical skills required by Camera Operators aspiring to enter the Broadcast TV market. A good camera operator also needs to have good artistic senses and abilities. Like practical skills this is something that is acquired through training and practice. As with all training and practice the trainee needs to have access to a good trainer and the time to observe & practice. Trainer input alone does not make a good cameraman; a Trainer should give the student an understanding of what is required through explanation and demonstration, from that point on, it is down to the student to watch high end Broadcast output and practice/practice/practice what he or she sees and has learnt.

The Power Of IP
Jamie Shepperd There is little doubt that the adoption of IP technology across the broadcast workflow can bring significant benefit to broadcasters. IP is ubiquitous, it's based on common standards and broadcast can benefit further from the wealth of expertise and technology that exist in other industries. While we are still moving toward complete adoption- from ingest, processing and storage, to media management and distribution- there are areas where IP has been making its mark for some time, providing the industry with a powerful proof point for its wider adoption.
