Baselight Ka-booms in Belfast

Belfast production and post-production facility Ka-boom has installed a Baselight ONE grading suite with Slate control panel to add to its existing Baselight for Avid plugins. Initial grading projects for movies and documentaries led to Ka-boom winning the finish on a major new BBC entertainment show, Cant Touch This, which called for all the efficiencies as well as the creative power of Baselight and its interaction with Baselight for Avid.

Polecam proves The Boom is the Zoom at NAB 2010 Posted: 07/05/2010
polecam 3d head ">"You have the best 3D in the entire show," commented visitors to Polecam's demonstrations at the April 2010 NAB Convention in Las Vegas. With many exhibitors navigating through the minefield of shooting 3D through variable-magnification optics, Polecam clearly illustrated the advantages of deploying prime lenses and moving the cameras towards the subject rather than zooming into close-up.

Investing in the Future of Broadcast Media
Clive Northen At the time of writing, the summer World Cup is providing its usual challenge to camera crews trying to televise the bright sunlight of the stadium without losing detail in shaded areas such as the covered terraces. It is a perfect demonstration of the need for high dynamic range. Several broadcasters are experimentally covering this year's tournament in 4K HDR, including the BBC which is streaming dozens of matches via its iPlayer service. HDR is also accompanied by a wider colour space, meaning millions more colours can be displayed than previously. Yet another advance is the adoption of 50p delivery rather than traditional 50i.

Broadcasting Indoor Sky Diving
Daniel Harker Barnes When you say you’re broadcasting skydiving, there are two types of reactions. One is the creative, who’ll say something along the lines of “Wow. Those shots must look great” and other is the engineer who’ll say “That must be a real hassle to get all the infrastructure in and secure.”

How to shoot the perfect lighting mix
Alan Ipakchian Advances in high-quality LED lighting over the past couple of decades might be one of the best things that’s ever happened to broadcast and cinema production. Compared to traditional tungsten fixtures, LED lights offer powerful operational and financial benefits from longer life and lower energy bills to brighter, more consistent light and greater control over color temperature. LEDs generate much lower heat and are relatively cool to the touch, meaning they can be used in much smaller rooms and studios without sweating out the talent and crew or damaging property. Plus, compared to traditional tungsten bulbs, LED lights are virtually maintenance-free and can deliver tens of thousands of hours of lamp life.

Epictech makes headway: A case study
Daniel Harker Barnes Founded in January 2014, EpicTech Media have been providing high end video production to companies and musicians across the U.K. for over three and a half years. When approached earlier this year by the band Bodkin Lane, we relished the challenge of producing a video of their charity concert, in aid of Headway (www.headway.org.uk), despite the challenging size of the venue.

50 years in and the show must go on
John Smith -new At IBC we always look forward to meeting old faces and new. For those more recently acquainted with the broadcast industry, you may not realise IBC was born half a century ago in London. In 1967 the show, held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, attracted just 32 exhibitors and 500 delegates. However, its popularity grew and the exhibition quickly upgraded with a move to the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, followed by the Wembley Conference Centre, before moving to Brighton.

Polecam user review
Phil Vinter When it comes to filming from above, drones have dominated in recent years. But restrictions on where and when they can be used means there is still a demand for traditional style jibs.

Diversify or Die
Steffan Hewitt This headline of this article is a simple fact, diversify or die! It is necessary for survival as well as interest of mind to do this within business. "If a farmer can no longer produce crops because no-one wants them he must diversify or die." Caravans, glamping, corporate days in the country with hunting, fishing and shooting; these are just some of the changes that Britain's' farmers have made or they have gone out of business.

Selecting the right broadcast minicam lens
Steffan Hewitt So we all know that HD and 4K (and beyond) is the norm for content creation and delivery, with the need for unique and versatile shots being offered to increase the audiences participation and visual experiences. A major factor aside from the camera itself is the selection of lens, for some of the UHD sensor formats a broad spectrum of "off the shelf" lenses exist - this however can mean that in some restrictive instances (such as In-Goal and In-Car environments) the physical size of the camera and lens are too large and therefore not suitable for the application.

Filming in 4k in not just about the camera
Steffan Hewitt Filming in 4K is not just about the camera. The whole workflow and supply chain needs to be considered. A BNC cable that you have used for the last few years has happily coped with 1.5G HD-SDI, now we are wanting twice the data rate.

Make a scifi film in the Mexican Desert
Edward Andrews British director Nicolas Roeg once said to me that making a film is like horse racing. To start with you give the horse a nudge to get him moving, then as you gather speed there's a point where you have to trust the horse. You hold on and the horse will carry you across the finish line.
