Great performance in small team with Sachtlers FSB 8 Posted: 22/05/2013
Great performance in small team with Sachtlers FSB 8

To shoot the documentary Steppenlauf, cinematographer Florian Langanke traveled all the way to Mongolia. Together with director Anni Seitz, he accompanied three young Mongolian cross-country skiers, who, in spite of difficult training conditions in their country, would like to participate in the global community of top-class athletics. Their biggest dream is to take part in the Winter Olympics. In a small team, consisting of the two graduates from the Filmakademie Baden-Wrttemberg and an interpreter, Florian Langanke depended on the FSB 8 fluid head with the Speed Lock 75 CF tripod by Sachtler, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company.

Sachtler Ace L and New FSB Tripod Systems at NAB 2013

Sachtler, a part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, will present its new Ace L fluid head for the first time ever in the USA from April 8-11 at NAB booth C6432. The new 75mm fluid head carries camera set-ups of up to six kg (13 lbs) and is available with various very lightweight carbon-fiber tripods in a system package. In addition, Sachtler will introduce the new heavy-duty ENG 75/2 D HD tripod, which, together with the FSB 6 and FSB 8, makes for a particularly stable and durable combination. Furthermore, attendees can try out the artemis camera stabilizer systems.

Video 18 exclusive: ENG with Patrick Simon

Time is in short supply. A retake is usually impossible. For some, TV reporting and live production mean stress; for others, it is a challenge: "It is always exciting to arrive at the shooting location and realize that the shoot will not go according to plan. This means rethinking spontaneously, deciding quickly, getting the best possible results with the equipment at hand, and, in spite of everything, producing good material," says freelance digital media designer for video and audio Patrick Simon when describing filming in the ENG field. Every take has to be perfect the first time. Therefore, it is even more important for operators to be able to rely on camera support. His choice: the Video 18 ENG 2 CF, a tripod system by Sachtler, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company.

Trade shows and their role in the wired world
Richard Baker Historically trade shows afforded an opportunity to collect the latest brochures relevant to the visitor's chosen industry or career path. Today there seems little reason to store data of any kind, let alone paper brochures, when information is so easily accessible online. Brochure back-packing at exhibitions has become a rare sight, rarer still since the security clampdown on visitor luggage at exhibitions. Today's efficient show delegate need only carry a mobile phone and, in deference to tradition, a bundle of business cards. The phone doubles as a snapshot camera, video camera, dictaphone, email reader, internet browser, Skype communicator, and so on.

Documentary filmmaking - Protecting the past
Charlie Watts If you wanted my opinion on what I thought was the most rewarding media making pursuit, I'd have to single out documentary filmmaking. All media making can be very demanding, and each genre has its own particular issues that make it what it is, but almost nothing is certain about documentary which is why I find it so exciting. The idea could be inspirational, but the shoot might be flawed and not yield the required depth. Perhaps the idea and the shoot go brilliantly, but in the edit the real story gets lost. The latter suggestion contains the key ingredient - story. All media making is reliant on a good story, and knowing what makes a good story is something all teachers are keen to convey.

Getting to grip with it with Mark Scotton
Mark Scotton

Getting the right equipment to ensure you add value to your production can be difficult, especially when there are so many products available that all seem to be offering different solutions. Creating moving shots can be done in a variety of ways by using products such as jibs, cranes, tracking dollies, sliders or stabilizers, the key is identifying which item is going to be best suited to your requirements and which version would be the best to purchase.
