Panavision LINK HDR On-Set System Employs Leader LV5350 Posted: 21/09/2020
Panavision LINK HDR On-Set System Employs Leader LV5350

With high dynamic range rapidly becoming the new production standard, filmmakers need the proper tools to make the most of it both creatively and technically. Fueled by the talent and technology leadership at Panavision and Light Iron, Panavision's LINK HDR addresses the challenge of viewing HDR images throughout the production and post-production processes, bringing HDR and SDR viewing options to clients in tandem at every stage of the imaging chain.

Panavision's LINK HDR On-Set includes a plug-and-play mobile village system optimized to bring familiar post-production-quality HDR images right on the set. With its unique modular design, the system can be configured for large and small monitors, with several customizable footprints.

Leader's LV5350 waveform monitor, which is included as part of the Panavision LINK HDR On-Set system, allows productions to measure values even beyond the capabilities of their HDR reference monitors. The powerful HDR CINEZONE function enables cinematographers to quickly see which values are above SDR and determine in the moment how they want to creatively address those areas of the frame.

Only with the Panavision LINK HDR and Leader LV5350 waveform monitor can cinematographers, directors and editors leverage the ability to view their images throughout the imaging chain in the same HDR format delivered to consumers, eliminating the guesswork and providing absolute confidence from production to delivery.

Nixer Adds Enhanced Feature Set to PD Dante Posted: 18/09/2020
Nixer Adds Enhanced Feature Set to PD Dante

Nixer Pro Audio expands the feature set of its Dante network ‘Swiss Army Knife’ device, PD Dante, as part of a firmware update. With version 2.11, users now get access to a new 16-channel horizontal view that supports long Dante channel names of up to 31 characters, which allows them to get a quick overview of the status of each channel on the network.

It is also possible to scroll by simply swiping the screen, making it more intuitive and easy to use during daily operation. Further, an 8-channel view that is also swipe-compatible has been added. The Home unit is now marked in blue for quick identification and sample rates can be changed except from when on an AES67 network. Also, users may now edit device names on the network directly from PD Dante.

Finally, a number of existing features have been refined for an even better user experience and ease of use. These improvements include e.g. clear display of each routed source and subscribed name, direct control and routing of any device on the network, make and remove subscriptions, high resolution monitoring, display of sample rate for each source and built-in tone generator for swift testing.

AWS debuts Cloud Digital Interface (AWS CDI) to reliably transport uncompressed live video between applications Posted: 17/09/2020
AWS debuts Cloud Digital Interface (AWS CDI) to reliably transport uncompressed live video between applications

AWS unveiled the AWS Cloud Digital Interface (AWS CDI), a new network technology that allows Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and AWS Partners to build reliable, live video applications that can connect products and services within the AWS Cloud. Workloads that require high-performance connectivity and uncompressed live video transport have been historically deployed on-premises using standards such as Serial Digital Interface (SDI) or other dedicated network IP infrastructure. This has prevented these workflows from taking advantage of the agility and scalability of the AWS Cloud. Now, with AWS CDI customers can deploy live video solutions, such as TV channel playout, motion graphic insertion, multi-viewer applications, live video production switching, video frame rate and color space conversion, forensic watermarking and video encoding/decoding. AWS CDI enables the deployment of these live video solutions in the AWS Cloud by giving customers access to high-performance networking and defining an interoperable audio, video, and metadata (AVM) schema that facilitates reliable communication between various vendor applications.

TVFutures My Dive in to Learning
Lucy Crow In 2014 I had my first taste of underwater diving. I was on a family holiday and I happened across the experience of a lifetime. Within the first few minutes of that adventure I had decided that I wanted to be part of the diving world going forward. After countless dives and extensive training to become a scuba diving instructor, I made the decision to attend university. I knew that whatever I was going to study, I wanted it to involve my passion for Scuba.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Control, as easy as pressing a button
Bazile Peter

A fundamental issue with control surfaces in modern broadcast operations is that they are, for the most part, old fashioned.

The ease, responsiveness, and functionality of touchscreens, especially in Smartphones are now commonplace. Attributes that are largely absent from touchscreens are typically buttons, sliders, and dials found on many control devices associated with human machine interaction.
