dBs Music Opens A Neve Room At Its Plymouth Teaching Facility Posted: 25/02/2020
dBs Music Opens A Neve Room At Its Plymouth Teaching Facility

dBs offers students facilities for learning real world music production and technology skills. To this end, the institution has recently invested in a new recording studio/studio lecture space with a 16 channel Neve Genesys console at its heart.

Entitled the AMS Neve Room, the new facility is located at dBs Music Plymouth and complements other studio facilities offering industry standard equipment.

Stu Welsh, who is responsible for leading the BA (Hons) Music Production and Sound Engineering and MA Innovation in Sound Post Graduate courses, says: “The console was previously installed in our commercial studio but has been moved to the new classroom so that students can have full access it. We are running the console in conjunction with a Pro Tools HD rig and a Studer A800 MkIII 2" tape machine. Although it is a steep learning curve for students, once they are familiar with the routing and the digital layer they soon appreciate the flexibility and efficiency the console delivers – not to mention the great Neve analogue sound.”

The new studio in Plymouth is being used to create audio and video content and will also be used by most, if not all, guest lecturers.

Welsh adds. “Everyone loves working in the Neve Room, it's become one of the most used recording suites at our Plymouth Campus. It is especially popular for recording and for mixing with lots of analogue outboard gear.”

Calrec NAB 2020 Preview: Central Hall Stand C8008

Calrec’s Type R for TV is a new virtual mixing console with its design allowing customers to take advantage of these new workflows. It’s flexible and integrated native IP core gives customers a way to benefit from virtual working practices by integrating with station automation systems. Type R for TV is driven by station automation and is compatible with popular station automation systems including Ross Overdrive, Sony ELC and Grass Valley Ignite. Type R is the best of both worlds – it provides fully automated programming with real-time adjustment of unpredictable external factors via a standard web browser. Type R’s small, adaptable and highly portable hardware elements can be easily added if desired.Powered by standard POE switches, Type R has three different panel options. If broadcasters prefer a physical surface then banks of 6 x faders can be added, or adaptable soft panels like Calrec’s Large Soft Panel (LSP) and Small Soft Panel (SSP) can be used.

VP2 virtualized mixing system

Calrec’s VP2 virtualized mixing system has no physical control surface and utilisesCalrec’s Assist software for setup and control. VP2’s 4U core comes in three DSP sizes; 128, 180 and 240 input channels, and incorporates Calrec’s powerful Hydra2 networking solution. As with all Hydra2 products this can be controlled by a station automation system.

VP2 enables a station to reap many of the benefits of using a Calrec console, but without a physical control surface. Calrec’s Assist UI can be accessed from multiple locations via a web-browser. Control can be limited to basic functions or full control can be awarded to delve deeper to fine tune the setup or recall different shows as needed.

Type R

Calrec is showing its Type R modular, expandable, IP-based system at CABSAT. Type R makes use of standard networking technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be tailored to operator needs.

Type R’s physical control system consists of three slimline panels: a fader panel, a large soft panel and a small soft panel. Each is compatible with COTS hardware and powered over Ethernet to keep cabling to a minimum. At the heart of Type R is a simple 2U core with integrated I/O resources to get customers up and running immediately.

Calrec’s Brio console – immense power in a compact package

Calrec’s compact, high power Brio consoles are designed with versatility in mind to work across all different broadcast applications for everything from live sports to news and light entertainment. The Brio36 includes an impressive range of on board I/O so it’s operational straight out of the box. It also has full Hydra2 network compatibility and a sensitive price point that doesn’t reflect the full and rich broadcast feature set. The smaller Brio12 is only 484mm with standard trims and just 430mm with Calrec’s slim trim option.

Last year, Calrec upgraded the channel count for both the Brio36 and Brio12 with DSP expansion packs, bringing their channel counts from 64 to 96 inputs and 48 to 64 inputs, respectively.

Riot Games in a league of their own with Calrec RP1 remote production solution Posted: 12/02/2020
Riot Games in a league of their own with Calrec RP1 remote production solution

Riot Games’ 2019 League of Legends World Championship final in Paris relied on Calrec’s RP1 remote production technology for the English language feed for viewers in North America, Europe and Oceania.

Dave Talavera, Audio Engineer with Riot Games, said, “When it came to building our new European facility in Berlin two years ago, we knew, given our experience with remote production, that was the path that we wanted to continue down. Calrec was the only company that had come up with a remote production solution for IFB and they are still very much at the forefront of this. This was essential for the remote production of the English language feed for the final in Paris.”

DIGITAL VIDEO GROUP INSTALLS CALREC INTO NEW BROADCAST STUDIO FOR WSLS Posted: 30/01/2020
DIGITAL VIDEO GROUP INSTALLS CALREC INTO NEW BROADCAST STUDIO FOR WSLS

Digital Video Group (DVG) recently installed and commissioned a Calrec Brio 12 digital broadcast audio console as part of a brand-new broadcast studio project for NBC Virginia affiliate, WSLS. The Brio was selected by WSLS and DVG for its powerful and comprehensive feature set and audio quality.

“We typically spec Calrec for our high-end installations because the company offers great support as well as quality equipment,” says Alex Martin, CEO, Digital Video Group. “We went with the Calrec Brio 12 because we knew it would act as a bridge between the studio’s analog equipment and digital gear. Since the system and the production control room are automated, a large traditional audio mixer wasn’t required for this project.”

While the focus was on automation, the Brio gives the studio a physical interface where users can manually operate it, if required. The fact that the Brio can use both MADI and Dante was also an important capability for the WSLS project. Installing the Calrec console, using multi-channel digital audio with a Ross router, expedited setup and required less than six cables, where it was once necessary to use dozens.

LIPA Installs A Neve Genesys Console As Part Of Its Ongoing Upgrade Plan Posted: 29/01/2020
LIPA Installs A Neve Genesys Console As Part Of Its Ongoing Upgrade Plan

LIPA (The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) has installed an AMS Neve Genesys G32 console with GenesysControl into Studio 1, a compact facility that is primarily used to teach music tracking, overdubbing and mixing to students on its Sound Technology degree courses.

Adding the new console was the main part of the upgrade and this was done to ensure students have access to the most up to date technology incorporating the latest techniques and trends.

“We chose a Neve Genesys G32 console because we wanted something fundamentally analogue in terms of its signal path, but also something that integrated well with modern workflows,” says Jon Thornton, Head of Sound Technology at LIPA. “As we already have a large format SSL Duality in the George Martin Studio next door, we thought that we should really have a contrast, both in terms of sonics and approach. The Genesys fitted the bill perfectly and gives us plenty of channels in the footprint we have available.”

NEP Hilversum Chooses Custom Consoles Control Desks and MediaWall for New MCR Suite Posted: 23/01/2020
NEP Hilversum Chooses Custom Consoles Control Desks and MediaWall for New MCR Suite

Custom Consoles announces the completion and installation of eight control desks and a large MediaWall monitor display support system for NEP Media Solutions BV. Located in the master control room at the company's studios in Hilversum's Media Park, the desks are configured in front and rear rows for use by up to six and four operators respectively.

"The desks are similar in style and colour scheme to a suite we produced in early 2018 for another NEP television studio facility," says Custom Consoles' Sales Manager Gary Fuller. "The forward desk centres on a dual-operator bridge with a total of eight forward-sloping 4U equipment pods. This is constructed as a rectangular unit with space for two operators. Left and right of the bridge are two units of identical design to the bridge but angled to match the curve of the 13.9 metre wide six-frame MediaWall. The MediaWall itself is one of the largest we have produced to date, each of the six frames accommodating four 55 inch UHD displays to create an 11-wide by two-high screen array with two additional pairs of 32 inch screens."

Carlos Rodgarman Adds Prestige To His Studio By Installing A Genesys Black

Los Angeles based producer and composer Carlos Rodgarman has installed an AMS Neve Genesys Black console in is private studio in Los Angeles.

Within months of installing the G16 desk, Rodgarman was so impressed by its power, flexibility and the way it streamlined his workflow that he upgraded to a G48 by adding a 16 channel expansion module. He also took the opportunity install the Neve GenesysControl Plugin and Neve 88R EQ hardware.

“To say I am blown away by this console is an understatement,” Rodgarman says. “The combination of Genesys Black and GenesysControl has completely revolutionised the way I work. I get all the benefits of Neve’s fabulous analogue EQ and dynamics without having to sacrifice any of the convenience of working ‘in the box’. It is transformative – just saying I have a Neve console is impressive because my clients understand the brand’s audio quality and pedigree.”

Originally from Spain, Rodgarman moved to America 18 years ago to pursue a career as a musician. As a talented pianist, he worked with many artists including Celine Dion, All-4-One, Prince Royce, Jonathan Butler, Sheila E, La India and many more. He is also in demand as a producer, arranger, musical director and programmer and now spends most of his time in the studio, where he has worked with artists such as Juan Gabriel, Beto Cuevas, Jenni Rivera, producer Humberto Gatica, Laura Bretan, Cristian Castro, Isabel Pantoja, Antonio Carmona and Oskar Cartaya, whose latest project was nominated for a Latin Grammy. Composing music for advertising agencies with partner David Weisberg and film and television projects is also slotted in around his music clients and his own projects, which he releases under the name of The RodgarBand.

Why MADI is Still Relevant
Stephen Brownsill While the original idea for MADI was to cater to a very narrow recording studio application, the standard remains a viable go-to multichannel audio technology. Beginning as a standard in 1991, MADI was first introduced to the world as digital production was beginning to come of age. MADI was put together in 1988 by Solid State Logic, AMS-Neve, Sony (DASH) and Mitsubishi (ProDigi) as a way to transport up to 56 channels of digital audio between large-format audio consoles of the day and digital multi-channel tape machines via 75-Ohm coaxial cables. Both tape-based machines have long since disappeared from the equipment landscape.

Speed in a Changing Media Landscape
Mike Nash We are living in the video era - the staggering statistics on video growth make that abundantly clear. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index: Forecast and Methodology 2016–2021, video will make up 82 percent of all consumer internet traffic by 2021, an increase from 73 percent in 2016. To put this in perspective, “it would take an individual more than five million years to watch the amount of video that will be crossing global IP networks each month in 2021.”
