ATG Danmon Completes Westminster Links Upgrade Posted: 27/03/2020
ATG Danmon Completes Westminster Links Upgrade

ATG Danmon announces the completion of upgrades to OB link facilities in the City of Westminster, central London, for one of Europe's leading television news providers. The project centred on new interface portals at Abingdon Green adjacent to the UK Houses of Parliament, and in Downing Street. Abingdon Green is often used by TV and radio reporters as a location for interviews with politicians and political commentators. The Downing Street portal is frequently used by reporters and mobile production crews covering activity outside the residences of the UK prime minister and the chancellor of the exchequer.

"Our role was to modernise the cabling, fibre and connectivity at each portal," says ATG Danmon managing director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "These are used for many Westminster-related broadcasts, both live and recorded, in addition to similar facilities at various other key London locations. They also form part of the wide range of facilities offered to other broadcast and corporate clients."

"Both portals are equipped to handle 1920 x 1080p50 Full-HD HD-SDI and IP. They also include high quality multi-channel analogue audio in/outs, genlock reference, IP data, a video return feed, audio talkback and electrical power. Everything is housed in highly robust and fully weatherproof steel cases which are kept locked until actually needed."

"The project is the latest of several commissions we have completed for this client. We were chosen both for our proven experience and because we already had accreditation to work within the Palace of Westminster."

DHD Announces New Addition to Management Team

DHD Audio GmbH, a leading manufacturer of professional mixers and audio devices, announces a new addition to its management team. Anne Philipp is promoted to General Manager, reporting to Managing Directors Joerg M. Deubner and Sven Hoffmann.

Graduating in 2006 with a Business Administration degree from the University of Leipzig, Anne Philipp joined DHD in January 2007 as an executive assistant responsible for materials procurement and accounting. She later also took on production planning. In 2010 she left to work on public tender preparation for a municipal organisation, returning to DHD in 2016. Since then she has resumed her former roles within the company as well as supervising DHD's human resources.

"Anne Phillip is a highly efficient and effective administrator who has proved her management skills within DHD over many years," Joerg Deubner comments. "Sven and I are still deeply involved in hardware and software development so fully appreciate having a colleague of her competence in charge of general company operations."

Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London Posted: 17/03/2020
Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London

A PMC 7.1 surround sound system is being installed in The Design Museum, London, to support a new exhibition that focuses on legendary electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and their 50 year impact on the club scene.

Entitled Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers, the exhibition runs from April 1st to July 26th 2020. It will evoke the experience of being in a club by transporting visitors through the people, art, design, technology and photography that captured and shaped the electronic music landscape.

A surround sound system based on PMC’s award-winning result6 compact nearfield monitors will be an integral part of the exhibition, which will feature a 3D show capturing Kraftwerk’s music and stage performances. As long term PMC users, the band were adamant that only PMC speakers should be used for this system.

Commonly referred to as the ‘Godfathers of electronic music’, Kraftwerk pioneered the genre in the 1970s and had an enormous influence on other bands, including The Chemical Brothers. Alongside the Kraftwerk 3D show, the Design Museum’s exhibition will allow visitors to step into the visual world of The Chemical Brothers for one of their legendary live shows, as visuals and lights interact to create a new three-dimensional experience by Smith & Lyall, featuring Grammy Award-winning track Got to Keep On.

Black News Channel Launches with Brightline LED Fixtures Posted: 12/03/2020
Black News Channel Launches with Brightline LED Fixtures

Black News Channel, which launched on Feb. 10 and is the nation’s only African American news network, features a dynamic news set lit with Brightline L1.2 and L1.4 SeriesONE LED soft light fixtures. Designed by Devlin Design Group in Scottsdale, Ariz., the main set features a news desk, two large LED video wall areas, and a small interview set. RGB lighting elements – including hanging set pieces, walkways, and video wall backlights – created some talent lighting challenges. Lighting designer Bill Holshevnikoff said Brightline has “great control options on their fixtures, so you can make sure you’re not spilling light on the RGB elements and spoiling the color.”

VRT use Quicklink Studio (ST55) for fundraiser event Posted: 10/03/2020
VRT use Quicklink Studio (ST55) for and lsquo;De Warmste Week and rsquo; fundraiser event

VRT (Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Organisation), the national public-service radio and television broadcaster for the Flemish Community of Belgium, have recently used the Quicklink Studio (ST55) solution for coverage of VRT’s annual charity fundraiser De Warmste Week (The Warmest Week).

Studio Brussel, which is part of VRT, is a Dutch-speaking radio station that is aimed mainly at a youth audience. During De Warmste Week, Studio Brussel used the Quicklink Studio (ST55) for their radio marathon. Every morning Studio Brussel held a video call with Dieter and Kevin from ‘Down The Snow’ to follow them along their hitchhiking adventure from Russia to Belgium.

“The Quicklink Studio solution is a very user-friendly solution which works smooth and efficiently, is not complicated and is easy-to-use” said a spokesperson at VRT.

“After a few tests, we found the Quicklink Studio was the ideal solution. It allowed us to easily invite a user via a link and have them appear in the interface instantly. By using the Quicklink Studio we were able to initiate a connection with full audio and video in both directions, giving us a ‘full-fledged’ duplex environment.”

Mo-Sys Transforms Remote Production and Virtual Studios Posted: 11/03/2020
Mo-Sys Transforms Remote Production and Virtual Studios

Mo-Sys Engineering, a global leader in real time camera tracking and camera remote systems, can now remotely operate cameras on the other side of the world, without perceived delay, with the launch of TimeCam.

TimeCam represents a triple benefit to production companies. First, there is the saving in cost and environmental impact in sending camera operators to site. Second, it means that the most in-demand operators can be much more productive, providing excellent coverage at a live event each day rather than losing time through travel. Third, it means that you can add cameras to your coverage without adding headcount: for instance, a downhill ski race might have eight cameras along the course, with one operator controlling cameras 1, 3, 5 and 7 and a second controlling 2, 4, 6 and 8.

“’Traditional’ remote production puts the control back at base, but still needs camera operators to travel to the location,” explained Mo-Sys CEO Michael Geissler. “By compensating for latency in transmission and compression/decoding, TimeCam means that operators too can stay at base and be much more productive by operating on several events, when normally they could only be on one.”

As well as unveiling TimeCam, Mo-Sys will also demonstrate its flagship virtual studio technology StarTracker, which uses a constellation of dots on the studio ceiling as a camera tracking system. This is now extensively used by many prestige broadcasters to provide the tracking for augmented reality studios and is increasingly being built-in to studio cameras.

Whereas most virtual studios use a proprietary graphics system which in turn uses the Unreal gaming engine from Epic Games, StarTracker Studio (in a 19” rack) now features the plug-in Mo-Sys VP which we like to call Unreal Unleashed, a direct interface between the camera tracking and the UE4 render engine. Through the plug-in, control is direct, and no other software layer is wrapped around the Unreal Engine allowing full access to the latest UE4 features.

“Both TimeCam and StarTracker with Unreal Unleashed are transformative technologies, capable of bringing new creativity and productivity to the broadcast and movie worlds, allowing sophisticated productions around the globe,” Geissler said.

Cinegy bets all on SRT, brings 8K to everyone, and launches new, all-in-one TV Pack suite Posted: 11/03/2020
Cinegy bets all on SRT, brings 8K to everyone, and launches new, all-in-one TV Pack suite at NAB Show 2020

Cinegy, the global leader for cloud and on-premise broadcast software solutions is reinforcing its strong support for Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) while at the same time making end-to-end workflows including for 8K and HDR, affordable. This fact is illustrated with its enhanced, new TV Pack solution for channel and studio-in-a-box applications.

Cinegy has long been a champion of SRT as it is essential for cloud operations and remote production providing inexpensive, secure delivery of IP video over the public Internet. SRT support is now an integral part of all Cinegy software products.

Cinegy Lewis Kirkaldie said, “SRT enables the development and deployment of many new applications, and makes the use of existing applications much easier because it eliminates any bandwidth limitations to using them. In effect, SRT opens the application floodgates.”

Custom Consoles Module-R and Module-R Lite Desks Chosen for New Studio and Production Gallery in Geneva Posted: 06/03/2020
Custom Consoles Module-R and Module-R Lite Desks Chosen for New Studio and Production Gallery in Geneva

Custom Consoles has completed a twin-desk project for the Geneva offices of a globally active service organisation. Designed and supplied in partnership with Swiss broadcast systems integrator Visuals, the desks comprise an L-shaped Module-R for use by up to five production gallery operators and a rectangular Module-R Lite configured for two operators.

"The desks form a core part of a new television studio," says Peter Sullivan, Visuals' Broadcast Systems Project Manager. "These will be used for a wide range of productions which can be live streamed or recorded for later viewing."

"Custom Consoles' Module-R and Module-R Lite series have proved a successful choice in earlier projects we have completed for major broadcasters such as RTS and more recently for Switzerland's National Equestrian Institute, allowing robust and operator-friendly desks to be produced from our initial draft designs."

"The L-shaped Module-R desk is a seven-bay straight section combined with a four-bay and twin-bay corner unit situated alongside a soundproofed window into the studio. A camera control unit embedded in the corner desk surface is used to control multiple robotic cameras."

"To the CCU operator's left is a ColourSource console which controls the studio's LED-illuminated cyclorama.

White Mark Ltd Revamps Middlesex Universitys Studio A Posted: 05/03/2020
White Mark Ltd Revamps Middlesex Universitys Studio A

The imminent launch of a new BA Degree course in Music Production has inspired Middlesex University London to revamp one of its music recording studios so that it can offer students the very best facilities for their course.

The University, which is based in Hendon, already has two stereo production suites that are DANTE linked to a recording booth, a 5.1 Avid mixing suite and a 24 track recording studio (Studio B), which has its own live room. The University’s existing Studio A, however, had many sound spill issues that needed resolving and it was decided that the best approach was to build a new acoustic space from the ground up.

David Clements, Technical Tutor, enlisted the help of studio design consultancy White Mark Ltd to transform Studio A into an acoustically accurate control room, live room and booth. The facility can now handle stereo and surround sound projects, thanks to the inclusion of a monitoring system that gives students the opportunity to mix in 5.1 and 7.1 formats.

White Mark Ltd was chosen for the project on the basis of its previous track record. “Once we discussed the project with David Bell [White Mark’s Managing Director] and his team, they drew up a design that we really liked,” says Technical Tutor David Clements. “We were looking at a few configurations of the space and White Mark’s plan to make the live areas one large room divided by a folding door into two booths just seemed to make the best use of the space.”

Why Renting is the New Buying

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

An Argument for the Z Cam
Jake Ratcliffe Z Cam first dipped their toes into the cinema camera market back at NAB 2018 with the release of the E2 and since then they have proven themselves as one of the go-to camera manufacturers for affordable and unique camera solutions. Their family of cinema cameras has since evolved into a set of 6.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

A Focus on the Feels
Simon Jones

Founded in London in the early 70s, Densitron was – as many companies are in the beginning - a small, specialist provider of an emerging range of thoughtfully assembled display technology products.

But that was 45 years ago. Although still London-based, it is no longer accurate to refer to Densitron as ‘small’. Consistent growth through the decades - coupled with recently becoming part of Quixant, the global gaming and broadcast technology group - has seen Densitron expand as part of a much larger, publicly traded company with offices in Europe, Asia, and America comprised of more than 200 employees generating annual turnover in excess of $100m.

More than just software - SaaS is a relationship
Jon Finegold As cloud technology becomes mainstream in media, the highly customized applications deployed by early adopters are increasingly being retired in favor of off-the-shelf, multi-tenant SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions. Well-designed SaaS offers economic advantages in terms of much faster onboarding times, orders of magnitude lower TCO and the ability to stay up-to-date more easily in today’s rapidly changing environment. SaaS solutions are updated regularly based on customer feedback and usage data so, as new trends emerge, vendors can respond quickly to the benefit of their customers.
