Grass Valley GV Alyve is the Clear Winner for Miss Germany Competition Posted: 27/02/2020
Grass Valley and rsquo;s GV Alyve is the Clear Winner for Miss Germany Competition

Grass Valley’s cloud-based video production and distribution solution was central to AKK TV’s live streaming of the Miss Germany 2020 competition, held on February 15 at the Europa-Park Arena near Freiburg. GV Alyve, allowed the German OB company to leverage one-click distribution of the live HD event stream to Facebook and the dedicated Miss Germany YouTube channel.

Using GV Alyve, the AKK TV production team was able to quickly and easily create digital broadcasts from within a web browser, switching seamlessly between live streams to create the final feed. Integrating seamlessly with AKK TV’s existing Grass Valley workflow, GV Alyve also allows graphics to be added to the live stream and provides a straightforward interface for managing social interactions across multiple platforms. The system was supplied by Grass Valley’s German reseller, LOGIC media solutions.

John Sturm, Managing Director of AKK TV commented: “We looked at a number of different solutions on the market and GV Alyve exceeded our expectations both on functionality and ease of use. We’ve worked with the Grass Valley and LOGIC teams in the past and they really understand our requirements. The added capability GV Alyve brings to our workflow allows us to grow the live streaming area of our business without adding complexity to our OB set-up.”

Pete Semerak, Grass Valley’s vice president, production, added: “We’re very pleased to see a successful first deployment for GV Alyve with AKK TV. In today’s live productions environment fast and smart ways of working are central to our customers’ needs. GV Alyve gives broadcasters and production companies a simple way to integrate online and social delivery, allowing production staff to distribute media to viewers with a single click and ultimately satisfying consumer demand for always-on content.”

Grass Valley Solutions Underpin NEP Europe Expanded IP Production Capability for a Summer of Sport Posted: 12/02/2020
Grass Valley Solutions Underpin NEP Europe and rsquo;s Expanded IP Production Capability for a Summer of Sport

Gearing up for a bumper year of premier live sporting events, NEP Europe has bolstered its production capability with a host of Grass Valley live IP production solutions. NEP is growing its capabilities across its OB and flypacks fleet, strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading outsourced technical production partners to premier producers of live sports and entertainment.

At the core of the expansion are nearly 60 new Grass Valley LDX 86N cameras. The new cameras feature Grass Valley’s built-in DirectIP capability which was developed in conjunction with NEP. This unique technology allows NEP to send only the camera heads to the given location, while all other control for the cameras and the production can take place at an off-site location. With this latest purchase, NEP Europe now has over 500 native 4K Grass Valley LDX 86N cameras in its portfolio.

Paul Henriksen, NEP Europe’s president, said: “2020 is set to be a huge year for live sporting and entertainment events around the world. We’re excited about the opportunity to help clients deliver innovative live productions that bring consumers closer to the action, wherever they are and on any device. Drawing on our long-established relationship with Grass Valley, and the close collaboration with its R&D team, allows us to leverage best-in-class solutions that are a perfect fit. Grass Valley understands our business model and is unrivaled when it comes to delivering the support that we, and our clients, demand.”

NEP Europe also purchased 30 RefleX SuperXpander Kit lens adapters, which convert handheld cameras into a studio/field production system, plus a number of LDX C86N compact cameras and several grass valley switchers including the 6 M/E Kahuna 9600 with Maverik control panel and the Kula 3 M/E switcher. The switchers feature FormatFusion technology, innovative, built-in format conversion that seamlessly handles multiformat operations. The wider rollout of Grass Valley’s K-Frame, Kahuna and Kula switchers across NEP’s fleet allows for standardized workflows that ensure greater efficiency across the group.

Mark Hilton, Grass Valley’s vice president of live production, commented: “We’re delighted to be working with NEP once again and proud to be the clear choice when it comes to supplying live IP production solutions. As NEP readies itself for a demanding year of exciting sports and live content, we very much look forward to working alongside the company in the thick of the action.”

Grass Valley IP Solutions Give Gravity Media a Smart, Flexible Live Production Infrastructure for Major Sporting Events Posted: 10/02/2020
Grass Valley IP Solutions Give Gravity Media a Smart, Flexible Live Production Infrastructure for Major Sporting Events

Grass Valley’s IP solutions have been selected by Gravity Media to form an open standards-based IP core built – together with Cisco Nexus 9000 IP switches – as part of an upgrade to its live production capability. The deployment includes Grass Valley UCP-25/50 Gateway cards and MV-821-IP multiviewers as part of a wider roadmap to full IP migration by the global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors. The system was deployed at the UEFA Europa League final in Baku, Azerbaijan on 29th May, 2019 and also formed the heart of the live production environment at the UEFA Champions League final in Madrid on 1st June, 2019. It was more recently used for the core of a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

As consumer demands for captivating viewing experiences place pressure on existing baseband environments, Grass Valley’s advanced IP solutions help customers transition to flexible, scalable infrastructures and smart, agile workflows. To evolve its live production capability, Gravity Media began migrating towards a live IP-based production environment at a major sporting event in Australia in January 2019, making use of Grass Valley IP multiviewers to handle its monitoring requirements. The new Grass Valley IP core enables Gravity Media to leverage a powerful, future-proofed production environment that is agnostic to evolving production needs and can adapt rapidly – even during an event.

“By taking an IP-based approach we have been able to vastly simplify the system. Now we can get the whole IP core up and running within a day – that is unheard of for a major sporting event,” explained Ed Tischler, acting managing director for the UK at Gravity Media. “As the frontrunner in the industry transition to IP, Grass Valley has the best pedigree, delivering the most accomplished solutions on the market. Their monitoring system is second to none and unlike solutions from other vendors – which require a lot of time spent in set up – with Grass Valley everything just works out of the box.”

Grass Valley Crowns a Year of Leadership Through Collaboration with IABM Award Win Posted: 19/12/2019
Grass Valley Crowns a Year of Leadership Through Collaboration with IABM Award Win

Grass Valley tops off a year of driving tighter industry collaboration and partnerships by winning the 2019 IABM Creative Collaboration Award. During 2019, Grass Valley cemented key projects and partnerships that have helped shape the industry. The company also demonstrated its commitment to driving innovation by establishing the Grass Valley Technology Alliance (GVTA).

Grass Valley’s president Tim Shoulders commented: “The broadcast industry is moving toward software-based solutions and pay-as-you-go environments, and our customers need partners that make this transition easier for them. A collaborative approach is central to extending our portfolio and facilitating pre-certified interoperable solutions that help our customers succeed in this new market landscape. We’ve made this is a strategic priority going forward, to work more with other vendors and deliver best-in-breed workflows.”

This commitment to collaboration is epitomized by the world’s largest remote/at-home production – the 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held in Åre, Sweden, which earned Grass Valley, along with partners Arista, ClearCom, Net Insight and Sveriges Television (SVT), the IABM Creative Collaboration Award. The Grass Valley-centric remote workflow deployed during the championship seamlessly handled 80 uncompressed HD camera signals and 100 feeds. Signals were delivered from the venue to SVT’s Stockholm headquarters – more than 372 miles away – via Grass Valley’s DirectIP connectivity. The remote production solution significantly reduced set-up time and generated cost savings of ten percent.

Broadcast Solutions Finland modernises Directors Cut production control rooms Posted: 26/11/2019
Broadcast Solutions Finland modernises Directors Cut production control rooms

In the two renewed multipurpose control rooms, Director's Cut creates the Finnish national programmes for international sporting events (e.g. football Champions League, ice hockey or tennis). Director's Cut's primary customer is MTV3, Finland's largest private television station.

After the successful implementation, it is now possible to produce up to six Finnish-language programme feeds simultaneously from two multipurpose control rooms with only two producers. One Mainfeed and two Sidefeeds can be produced per control room. Audio processing takes place in a Lawo Powercore. Control is via Lawo VisTool user interfaces and an 8-fader Ruby console for the Mainfeed and via two 4-fader Ruby consoles for the two Sidefeeds.

Broadcast Solutions created the VisTool interfaces especially to meet the individual workflows of Director's Cut. The new facility also includes six commentator booths equipped with Lawo LCUs and 43" Sony monitors.

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

Control, as easy as pressing a button
Bazile Peter

A fundamental issue with control surfaces in modern broadcast operations is that they are, for the most part, old fashioned.

The ease, responsiveness, and functionality of touchscreens, especially in Smartphones are now commonplace. Attributes that are largely absent from touchscreens are typically buttons, sliders, and dials found on many control devices associated with human machine interaction.

Never Stop Learning....Or Spending
Peter Heaven I’m over 75, and have been a member of the Bristol Film and Video Society (www.bristolvideo.org.uk) for several decades. Like the great majority of members, I am not and never have been a video professional but have video interests beyond the club and its productions. For some time I have been recording lectures (for other clubs) using a Panasonic HDC-HS100, a lovely little hand-held camera recording Full-HD 1920x1080i which has given very good service. But it has a 3.5mm jack for an external mic and this proved limiting, so I looked for a small mic mixer.

IBC 2019 A Whistle Stop Rundown
Ben Sherriff I’ve been to IBC once before, taking to the floor with Simon, Matt, Jon and the rest of the KitPlus team to assist with the filming of interviews. This was a lot of fun, but it was hard to find the time to look at the kit I wanted to see. This year with the demise of BVE and unable to make it to the Media Production Show I decided to fork out for a ‘research’ trip to IBC. In the spirit of full disclosure, I ought to note that I have two small children and a very busy work schedule, so the trip had nothing to do with escaping for a weekend of uninterrupted sleep and meal times (honest). Due to these commitments I could only manage one full day and a few hours the next day at the show so it was a lot to cram in trying to see everything I wanted to see!

Live Streaming Workflows Examined
Bryce Button In today’s hyperconnected world, audiences expect accessible, high quality content across the displays they see every day, whether at home or on the go, at a concert or church service, or even in the board room. There are a number of approaches professionals can take to deliver live content, but each workflow ultimately varies depending upon the delivery platform and the type of display that it’s intended for. There is no one-size fits all approach.

REVIEW Canon UJ111x8_3B UHD Lens
Andy McKenzie Shooting in ultra high definition and high dynamic range has become the preferred option for all television productions with a potentially long commercial life. The hir-ing charge and indeed the outright purchase cost of cameras of this standard are not significantly greater than those of high definition standard dynamic range models. With half the world's news reporters now able to capture UHD video on their mobile phones, why give the production crews anything less?
