Custom Consoles Introduces Operator Safety Screen Posted: 03/07/2020
Custom Consoles Introduces Operator Safety Screen

Custom Consoles announces a new addition to its range of technical control furniture. Developed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Operator Safety Screen reduces the risk of airborne infection or direct physical contact between control room personnel without restricting their forward or side view of video monitor displays.

"We designed the Operator Safety Screen following discussions with some of our largest customers," says Custom Consoles Managing Director Neil Reed. "Most technical control rooms and edit suites are well air-conditioned but Covid-19 has raised health and safety concerns to a significantly higher level. We responded promptly to the challenge with a space-efficient screen which can be installed quickly and easily wherever control room staff are working in close proximity. The Operator Safety Screen is designed to fit our Module-R series of technical furniture but fits all other desks in our product portfolio and those manufactured by other furniture companies.”

"The Operator Safety Screen has already generated orders totalling several hundred from broadcasters such as Al Jazeera, Amazon, BBC Studio Works, IMG, QVC, STV and Timeline as well as many others," adds Sales Manager Gary Fuller. "This makes it one of the fastest selling new products in Custom Consoles' history."

Custom Consoles Module-R Desks Chosen for One of the Worlds Largest News Agencies

Custom Consoles announces the completion of control room desks and multiscreen monitor display mounts for the London studios of one of the world's largest news agencies. The desks were provided in partnership with broadcast system integrator ATG Danmon.

"Control room furniture is an important part of every major contract," comments ATG Danmon Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "Bespoke designs tend to be expensive and require very detailed specification. We commissioned all four desks by selecting optimal elements from Custom Consoles' established Module-R series. Our clients appreciate the robust build quality, excellent ergonomics and timeless styling of Module-R. The Module-R range is also well thought out in terms of cable ducting, equipment access and ventilation."

"We are very pleased to note the continuing popularity of the Module-R series," adds Custom Consoles Managing Director Neil Reed. "A key feature of that success has been the easy access it provides to on-board equipment via knee-level access doors along the front of each desk. That is particularly important in the many situations where desks are positioned directly in front of a wall."

Mo-Sys puts the crowd back into sport Posted: 19/06/2020
Mo-Sys puts the crowd back into sport

London, UK, 19 June 2020: Mo-Sys Engineering, a global leader in real time camera tracking and remote systems, has announced a revolutionary approach to bringing the atmosphere back to live sport amid covid-19 restrictions. Providing precision, zero-latency tracking for any camera (including ultra-long box lenses for sport), the Mo-Sys camera tracking kit interfaces directly to the Unreal Engine or any broadcast render engine, allowing production companies to add virtual crowds to stands.

“After so many weeks, sports fans are desperate for any action,” said Michael Geissler, CEO of Mo-Sys. “But the frustration will turn to disappointment if the atmosphere of the game falls flat because of empty stands. We have developed a camera tracking kit which any outside broadcast can implement quickly and simply, capable of filling the stands with a virtual, but enthusiastic, crowd.”

The Mo-Sys camera tracking encoders are quickly mounted onto broadcast standard Vinten Vector heads, with no impact on the camera’s perfect balance and no backlash when panning and tilting. Zoom data is collected either by gear encoders or by a serial data link to digital lenses. The combined tracking data is sent over ethernet to the workstation hosting the augmented reality software.

“We are known for the absolute precision and stability of our camera tracking – that’s why Hollywood relies on our technology,” Geissler added. “In this application, we deliver precise tracking, including compensation for lens distortion, even when a 100:1 lens is zoomed fully.”

Mo-Sys has worked with Epic Games to develop a tight interface to the Unreal Engine, including support for the latest version 4.25 software. The result is that highly photo-realistic augmented reality – such as crowds filling the stands – can be integrated into live production with no limitations and negligible latency. The kit includes the bolt-on encoding kit for Vinten heads and the lens calibration tools.

Users can see the technology in action in a Mo-Sys LiveLab webinar, which will also include contributions from Epic Games and Canon. The webinars are on 30 June, at 10.00 (register at https://bit.ly/2N1Ve44) and repeated at 18.00 (register at https://bit.ly/30GqFZP). Michael Geissler of Mo-Sys will also join a distinguished panel with the RTS Thames Valley Creative Centre’s look at production techniques for audience shows in a time of pandemic on Thursday 25 June at 17.00 (register free at https://rts.org.uk/event/future-studio-audience).

Custom Consoles Module-R Desks and MediaWalls Chosen for Fidelity International Posted: 01/06/2020
Custom Consoles Module-R Desks and MediaWalls Chosen for Fidelity International

Custom Consoles announces the completion of two studio control desks and MediaWall monitor displays for a new UHD production facility at the London headquarters of Fidelity International. Supervised by systems integration specialist ATG Danmon, the project formed part of Fidelity's relocation to new premises in the centre of the city's financial district. The studios will be used for a range of applications including participation in finance-related broadcasts.

"We recommended Module-R and MediaWall on the basis of long experience with both product ranges," comments ATG Danmon Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "Their inherent modularity allowed us to specify exactly the required parameters in the full knowledge that the results would be robustly built, ergonomically sound, attractively styled, accurately sized and easy to install."

Largest of the two desks is a six metre wide in-line unit positioned along the main wall of the Studio 1 production gallery. This is configured for use by up to six operators including camera shading, robotic camera control, lighting control, graphic effects, vision mixing and control room to studio talkback. Sloping 3U high equipment pods run almost the entire width of this desk. All equipment above and below the main worktop remains easily accessible.

Custom Consoles Module-R and Module-R Lite Desks Chosen for New Studio and Production Gallery in Geneva

Custom Consoles has completed a twin-desk project for the Geneva offices of a globally active service organisation. Designed and supplied in partnership with Swiss broadcast systems integrator Visuals, the desks comprise an L-shaped Module-R for use by up to five production gallery operators and a rectangular Module-R Lite configured for two operators.

"The desks form a core part of a new television studio," says Peter Sullivan, Visuals' Broadcast Systems Project Manager. "These will be used for a wide range of productions which can be live streamed or recorded for later viewing."

"Custom Consoles' Module-R and Module-R Lite series have proved a successful choice in earlier projects we have completed for major broadcasters such as RTS and more recently for Switzerland's National Equestrian Institute, allowing robust and operator-friendly desks to be produced from our initial draft designs."

"The L-shaped Module-R desk is a seven-bay straight section combined with a four-bay and twin-bay corner unit situated alongside a soundproofed window into the studio. A camera control unit embedded in the corner desk surface is used to control multiple robotic cameras."

"To the CCU operator's left is a ColourSource console which controls the studio's LED-illuminated cyclorama.

Argosy focuses on convenience, operational flexibility and environmental considerations at CABSAT 2020 Posted: 10/02/2020
Argosy focuses on convenience, operational flexibility and environmental considerations at CABSAT 2020

Argosy, a leading international supplier of broadcast and AV cables and infrastructure products, will provide support for the Middle East and North Africa media market at CABSAT 2020 (31 March – 2 April 2020, Dubai World Trade Centre, stand G3-201). By providing a one-stop shop for systems engineers and designers, Argosy supports them in building sophisticated solutions quickly, simply and cost-effectively.

Argosy specialises in every aspect of media infrastructure, from cables and connectors to active hardware devices such as network switches, fibre transport and KVM switches. At CABSAT it will showcase a range of its offerings, including its own manufactured patching and termination panels, equipment racks and tactical fibre and SMPTE camera cables. Plus products from some of the market leading manufacturers including: BES, Canare, Cliff Connectors, Ghielmetti, and Neutrik.

Experts from Austrian vendor kvm-tec will also be available on the Argosy stand, explaining how the latest generation of high-bandwidth, IP-connected KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) solutions can deliver secure connectivity with low latency while linking multiple workstations to multiple computers. Such solutions reduce clutter in operational areas by needing only one set of keyboard, mouse and monitor while instantly accessing multiple services. This also helps to reduce cost by eliminating multiple monitors which contributes significantly to an improvement in environmental performance.

“With the media world changing so rapidly, demanding more outputs and higher resolutions, we know our customers need to be able to rely on suppliers to ensure they have the right infrastructure hardware, now and for the future,” said Chris Smeeton, CEO of Argosy. “We have a strong and long standing presence in the Middle East, and our many customers know that we are much more than just cable stockists – we can help finalise the details of installations, ensuring that the system works first time and stays working.

“CABSAT is a great opportunity for us to talk to our client base in the region,” Smeeton added. “They know us as problem solvers, and we enjoy finding solutions for them that are reliable, practical and, in an atmosphere of increasing environmental concerns, as green as we can make them.”

For more information, visit Argosy at CABSAT on stand G3-201.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.
