DejaSoft supports in-house hosted S3 server in DejaEdit 3.1 Posted: 02/07/2020
DejaSoft supports in-house hosted S3 server in DejaEdit 3.1

DejaSoft has released version 3.1 to support private cloud environments using the open source MinIO object storage solution.

DejaEdit 3.1 brings cost-saving advantages, allowing clients to use their own servers, reducing ongoing costs of an Amazon hosted S3 account, but more importantly, bringing the whole data operation in-house, ensuring absolute control with regard to data security and integrity.

MinIO is an open source Object Server, which can run in-house on a Linux, Mac, and Windows server and available for Docker. MinIO provides data storage via an S3 compliant API. This allows applications, such as DejaEdit, to store objects in private centralised storage, rather than to a cloud-hosted Amazon S3 storage device.

The ability to operate in a private cloud environment further adds to the security management features released in DejaEdit 3, where permission to access specific assets by particular users can be controlled via a management console.

DejaEdit allows multiple, remote Avid editors to work together by mirroring locally stored media and edit assets to the local storage of other connected systems, using secure, background transfers across the internet. It can also be used to exchange media with on-location DITs and VFX/Audio houses.

Mo-Sys puts the crowd back into sport Posted: 19/06/2020
Mo-Sys puts the crowd back into sport

London, UK, 19 June 2020: Mo-Sys Engineering, a global leader in real time camera tracking and remote systems, has announced a revolutionary approach to bringing the atmosphere back to live sport amid covid-19 restrictions. Providing precision, zero-latency tracking for any camera (including ultra-long box lenses for sport), the Mo-Sys camera tracking kit interfaces directly to the Unreal Engine or any broadcast render engine, allowing production companies to add virtual crowds to stands.

“After so many weeks, sports fans are desperate for any action,” said Michael Geissler, CEO of Mo-Sys. “But the frustration will turn to disappointment if the atmosphere of the game falls flat because of empty stands. We have developed a camera tracking kit which any outside broadcast can implement quickly and simply, capable of filling the stands with a virtual, but enthusiastic, crowd.”

The Mo-Sys camera tracking encoders are quickly mounted onto broadcast standard Vinten Vector heads, with no impact on the camera’s perfect balance and no backlash when panning and tilting. Zoom data is collected either by gear encoders or by a serial data link to digital lenses. The combined tracking data is sent over ethernet to the workstation hosting the augmented reality software.

“We are known for the absolute precision and stability of our camera tracking – that’s why Hollywood relies on our technology,” Geissler added. “In this application, we deliver precise tracking, including compensation for lens distortion, even when a 100:1 lens is zoomed fully.”

Mo-Sys has worked with Epic Games to develop a tight interface to the Unreal Engine, including support for the latest version 4.25 software. The result is that highly photo-realistic augmented reality – such as crowds filling the stands – can be integrated into live production with no limitations and negligible latency. The kit includes the bolt-on encoding kit for Vinten heads and the lens calibration tools.

Users can see the technology in action in a Mo-Sys LiveLab webinar, which will also include contributions from Epic Games and Canon. The webinars are on 30 June, at 10.00 (register at https://bit.ly/2N1Ve44) and repeated at 18.00 (register at https://bit.ly/30GqFZP). Michael Geissler of Mo-Sys will also join a distinguished panel with the RTS Thames Valley Creative Centre’s look at production techniques for audience shows in a time of pandemic on Thursday 25 June at 17.00 (register free at https://rts.org.uk/event/future-studio-audience).

PSSI breaks new ground to bring Top Rank boxing back to international viewers Posted: 11/06/2020
PSSI breaks new ground to bring Top Rank boxing back to international viewers

Top Rank has returned to television screens for the first time since the pandemic began, and to meet the challenges of live broadcasting in the world of COVID-19, the boxing promoter enlisted the help of PSSI Global Services. PSSI is providing a full complement of traditional and IP-based transmission services for Top Rank’s series of live fights from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and has accomplished several industry firsts in the process.

To facilitate a seamless broadcast despite the obstacles created by COVID-19, PSSI is providing both on-site engineering services and off-site monitoring and management. The company is leveraging Nextologies equipment to deliver the primary pathways via IP transport.

This collaboration between PSSI and Top Rank marks not only the first all-IP origination for a major boxing event, but also the first IP live international distribution to several countries. To help minimize the overall on-site presence of talent and staff, PSSI, in close partnership with Nextologies, also engineered a solution to integrate ringside commentary remotely over a customized IP network.

Mediaproxy helps broadcasters meet challenges of remote workflows Posted: 08/06/2020
Mediaproxy helps broadcasters meet challenges of remote workflows

Mediaproxy, the leading provider of software-based IP broadcast solutions, has been at the forefront of developing new television distribution workflows over the last 20 years. A major part of this has involved allowing increased remote operation of key functions such as monitoring and analyzing streams to ensure quality and compliance with international standards and national regulations.

There has been a growing interest in the potential of remote working over the last five years, particularly in allowing the coverage of news and sports events with smaller crews under the direct control of the main studio gallery. But the coronavirus crisis has forced a major rethink of how TV programs are not only produced but also monitored and distributed.

Mediaproxy has been able to offer its users, who include leading broadcast networks, streaming service operators and facilities, the flexibility to perform quality control (QC) and compliance monitoring away from the main master control room (MCR) or network operations center (NOC).

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Virtualising your Playout
Alison Pavitt

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

Why Renting is the New Buying
Ed Tischler To rent or to buy? This has long been a topic of debate in the world of property, with people having to choose between spending virtually all of their money up front or giving their money away each month with little chance of seeing a return.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.
