Media Links JPEG-XS Compression Solution for Bandwidth-Constrained, Low Latency Applications Posted: 09/03/2020
Media Links Showcases JPEG-XS Compression Solution for Bandwidth-Constrained, Low Latency Applications at NAB 2020

Media Links®, manufacturer and pioneer in Media over IP transport technology, announces that its MDP3020 IP Media Gateway now includes support for JPEG-XS compression.

JPEG-XS (extra speed extra small) achieves high quality compression ratios of up to 10:1 and beyond. This makes it ideal for the edge of the IP network where bandwidth is typically quite limited and where the transport of uncompressed high quality video is just not feasible. JPEG-XS ISO/IEC 21122) provides visually lossless quality with sub-millisecond (<1 video frame) delay and is especially designed for latency-critical applications such as live remote event production over wide area networks.

As with all of Media Links’ technology, solutions and professional services, the company offers broadcasters and network providers an agile IP migration path. This ensures that facilities have the benefits that include support for all existing and future formats and standards, overall cost reduction, as well as the ability to launch seamless workflows that support their current and evolving IP networks.

TVN24 becomes first worldwide broadcaster to future-proof its news production capabilities with Sony PXW-Z750 Posted: 05/03/2020
TVN24 becomes first worldwide broadcaster to future-proof its news production capabilities with Sony PXW-Z750

TVN24, the largest and the most-watched 24-hours news channel in Poland, becomes the first customer to receive ten Sony PXW-Z750 4K camcorders to future-proof its infrastructure for advanced 4K/UHD output and increase the agility of its news broadcasting operations.

As an existing Sony customer, TVN24’s investment into the latest PXW-Z750 4K camcorders will help replace more than 80 PDW-700 and PMW-500 Sony shoulder camcorders currently in use. With the Z750 camcorders, the news channel’s production team will now be able to shoot in 4K, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and High Frame Rate (HFR), delivering 4K image quality with high sensitivity and vivid colour reproduction, ideal for news and live production.

Jarosaw Kielmel, Technology Department Director at TVN Discovery Polska explains: “Having invested in various Sony broadcasting solutions over the years, we were keen to work with Sony to help us future-proof our news production capabilities, ready to migrate to 4K in the years to come. We're incredibly impressed by the picture quality of the PXW-Z750, particularly when shooting in HD thanks to its 3CMOS sensors. Combined with the increased flexibility it provides us with, the PXW-Z750 is fast becoming our go-to camcorder for our 24-hour news broadcasting operations.”

Sony has announced that its Simple Live Streaming service, a new proposition for users to streamline the process of acquiring live content, is now available (as of 12th December 2019). Finepoint Broadcast gears up for 2020 with a major further investment in Canon UHD lenses Posted: 11/12/2019
Finepoint Broadcast gears up for 2020 with a major further investment in Canon UHD lenses

As part of a strategy of continuing investment to track with the latest market requirements, Finepoint Broadcast, a leading UK dry hire provider of production and OB equipment to the global marketplace, has announced the further addition of a range of Canon lenses to its hire stock portfolio.

The additions include the standard Canon CJ24, plus the Canon CJ45 and large UJ90 lenses (UHD DIGISUPER).

Finepoint Broadcast Hire Manager Clive Northen said, “Finepoint has not seen the disruptive business peaks and troughs of recent years that have been so prevalent in various broadcast sectors. To the contrary, our growth has been steady and continuous, due in part to our continual evaluation and investment in technologies, such as these Canon lenses, that provide a direct benefit to our customers.”

Finepoint Broadcast Chief Engineer Andrew Mckenzie said, “The Canon CJ24 is an acclaimed telephoto lens with a 24x broadcast zoom and a focal length of 7.5-180mm that offers 4K performance that is ideal for on-the-shoulder newsgathering. The ultra-high zoom CJ45 is packed with innovative, class-leading technology that is perfectly suited to wildlife and live-sport deployments.

And with a 90x zoom, 9-810mm focal length, and image stabilisation that's fully compatible with 2/3" 4K cameras and broadcast environments where HDTV is currently in use, the Canon UHD DIGISUPER 90 lens is perfect for expanding Finepoint Broadcast’s 4K lens range.”

Sony and Verizon Demonstrate How 5G Stands to Transform Live Sports Production Posted: 10/12/2019
Sony and Verizon Demonstrate How 5G Stands to Transform Live Sports Production

Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc., Sony Mobile Communications Inc. and Verizon joined forces with NBC Sports to test how 5G can change the way live sports broadcasts are captured and produced. During the Houston Texans vs New England Patriots football game at NRG Stadium on December 1st, 2019, a camera person from NBC Sports captured video of the game on the field using Sony’s PXW-Z450 shoulder camcorder. The video was streamed through Sony’s prototype transmitter box and Xperia 5G mmWave device, via Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network to a production room in the stadium.

The test proved that 5G-connected cameras can be a reliable and beneficial option for future live sports broadcasts. Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband’s low latency and high bandwidth combined with Sony’s mobile device, video, and encoding expertise enabled low-latency high-quality video to be transmitted in near real time to producers. The test showed the potential for remote production teams to be located anywhere, regardless of where the game’s taking place. Furthermore, 5G’s essentially instant wireless connectivity means that cameras can be untethered, allowing for more creative camera positions and angles throughout the game and reducing set-up time and costs required for camera system integration.

Riot Games uses Nevion Virtuoso with JPEG XS in remote production of League of Legends World Championship Final Posted: 25/11/2019
Riot Games uses Nevion Virtuoso with JPEG XS in remote production of League of Legends World Championship Final

Nevion, award-winning provider of virtualized media production solutions, announced today that Riot Games, the publisher of the most-played PC game in the world and the organization behind League of Legends Esports, used Nevion’s software-defined media node Virtuoso as part of its remote production of the recent League of Legends World Championship Final. In doing so, Riot Games became one of the very first organizations in the world to leverage the ground-breaking JPEG XS encoding technology.

The League of Legends World Championship has been described as one of the biggest events in esports history, with the 2018 World Championship Final garnering an unprecedented 99.6 million unique viewers. This year’s event, which took place in Paris (France) on November 10, 2019, involved two remote (or at-home) production sites: the English language show was produced at Riot’s European headquarters facility in Berlin (over 1,000 km or 620 miles from Paris), while the world feed was produced in Los Angeles (around 9,000 km or 5,600 miles away). JPEG XS achieves high-quality compression with ratios up to 10:1 at sub-millisecond latency, i.e. a fraction of a video frame– allowing gaming fans and players watching at home to see the action faster.

HOLLYLAND LARK 150 Review
Phil Vinter

The exponential growth of video supercharged a technological revolution that began in the early noughties with the advent of DSLR cameras.
The cinematic-style shallow depth of field image video quality from DSLRs was a revelation, but, back then audio was the big drawback. As demand has grown so the technology has improved and today’s one-man-band small rig set ups can capture pretty good sound into a DSLR style camera.

Phil Vinter reviews the latest release from HOLLYLAND and it's a thumbs up from us.

ERA IaaS at University of Salford
KitPlus The University of Salford (UoS) is widely recognised in both academic and professional circles as a leading educational establishment in acoustics and media production. In 2011 the University moved its television and radio courses from its main campus just outside Salford city centre into the Orange Tower on the main piazza of MediaCityUK (MCUK).

This purpose-built hub for broadcasters, facility houses and production companies was created when redevelopment of the old Salford Quays docks area began in 2007. UoS was among the first institutions to consider moving to MCUK, along with the BBC, which had already committed to transfer many of its departments from London.
