MACRO CINEMA LENS

TOKINA ATX 100MM T2.9 MACRO

The Cinema AT-X 100mm T2.9 Macro Lens from Tokina is a true 35mm, full-frame, 1:1 macro close-up lens that fits Canon EF mount cameras. The lens achieves maximum magnification at a working distance of 11.8". This allows enough space for lighting, the camera operator, and the subject to work comfortably.

The lens's optical design is 4K-ready, super sharp, high contrast, and exhibits very low distortion and chromatic aberrations. Focus breathing is very well controlled, and the lens has a de-clicked, 9-bladed, curved iris for beautiful bokeh and precise exposure control. The wide T-stop range, from T2.9 to T32, allows for maximum control of exposure and depth-of-field, which is critical when working very close to your subject.

Visual Data Media Services invests and pound;250k in State-of-the-Art Cinema and Mastering facilities

Visual Data Media Services, the leading provider of digital supply chain services to global content owners and distributors, has announced the opening of a cutting-edge digital cinema at its leading facility in West London, UK.

The new cinema is fully 4K and Dolby Atmos capable and comprises a 10-seat theatre built around a NEC 4 projector and fed by a Doremi digital cinema server. A Dolby Atmos CP950 sound processor is linked to 28x JBL speakers and 14x 1KW Crown amplifiers.

Of particular interest is the 4-meter-wide acoustically transparent woven fabric screen. This is designed to Dolby and THX standards, and allows users to hear the cinema audio without the distraction of the perforations that are typically required to allow the sound from speakers mounted behind the screen to travel into the auditorium.

“This is the final time that many of our clients will see their film before it is distributed to the cinema network and it’s important that they have no visual distractions and are also assured that they’re reviewing their content in a high-end and fully calibrated environment,” explains David Margolis, Director of Digital Cinema at Visual Data Media Services.

New kit to shoot perfect down-the-lens interviews Posted: 02/05/2019
New kit to shoot perfect down-the-lens interviews

The ‘down-the-lens’ interview is quite commonly seen in documentary programmes where the subject is talking directly to the camera rather than to an unseen person off-camera. This very powerful technique is performed using a two-way mirror box setup, which allows the subject and interviewer to see each other via the mirror and maintain a natural, relaxed conversation without the distraction of the camera lens and crew.

IBC 2019 A Whistle Stop Rundown
Ben Sherriff I’ve been to IBC once before, taking to the floor with Simon, Matt, Jon and the rest of the KitPlus team to assist with the filming of interviews. This was a lot of fun, but it was hard to find the time to look at the kit I wanted to see. This year with the demise of BVE and unable to make it to the Media Production Show I decided to fork out for a ‘research’ trip to IBC. In the spirit of full disclosure, I ought to note that I have two small children and a very busy work schedule, so the trip had nothing to do with escaping for a weekend of uninterrupted sleep and meal times (honest). Due to these commitments I could only manage one full day and a few hours the next day at the show so it was a lot to cram in trying to see everything I wanted to see!

Creating A Signature Look With Lighting
William Hellmuth As an LA-based DP, I view my role as a narrative storyteller. For me, cinematography is not just about getting some nice images – it’s about telling truths. I love being able to weave a story with imagery and capture something that’s real, whether through performance or visual symbolism. Lighting is one of my most important mechanisms for capturing those moments of truth.

Keeping the Show on the Road
Andy McKenzie There is long-established saying in the media business that, if something goes wrong, at least nobody dies. It is almost true unless you happen to be a TV producer suffering a cardiac arrest because your primary video feed has gone blank during a high-budget programme.

Increasing Diversity in the UK Indie Market
Sam Addo

London director Sam Addo tells us more about how he aims to change the status quo when it comes to onscreen diversity with his new feature, Cards on the Table.

“Over the past thirty years, filmmakers have made movies telling a wide range of stories, however, in my humble opinion, those with disabilities, from the LGBTQ+ community and or those from ethnic minorities remain underrepresented on screen. For example, it is rare to find a film where the lead character has a disabil ity, and that underrepresentation is worrying.”

REVIEW Canon UJ111x8_3B UHD Lens
Andy McKenzie Shooting in ultra high definition and high dynamic range has become the preferred option for all television productions with a potentially long commercial life. The hir-ing charge and indeed the outright purchase cost of cameras of this standard are not significantly greater than those of high definition standard dynamic range models. With half the world's news reporters now able to capture UHD video on their mobile phones, why give the production crews anything less?

Making the Workflow Flow
Bruce Devlin - new The toughest things about being the Standards Vice President (SVP) is that everyone expects standards to be the most important thing. In all the systems that I’ve designed and deployed over the years, I've yet to find any production workflow that is 100% standards based. True, the core technologies may well be standards based, but the overall workflow is made up of many technology pieces from open source code, through de-facto delivery specifications based upon SMPTE or Trade Association Specifications that in turn depend on full, International Standards to work. I can already hear some folks saying "In the good old days, everything used standards", but I beg to disagree.

State of the Nation: Wings, Fine Coffee and Fake Nudes
Dick Hobbs - new One of the many attractions of this time of year is that I get to meet with my fellow judges for the IBC Innovation Awards, and see what the industry sees as the most important, most forward-looking projects of the day. For me, this says what the key talking points are going to be in September, far more eloquently than the endless press releases from vendors which are already tumbling into my inbox.

Review: JVC GY-HC900 Camera
Andy McKenzie JVC has a long history of developing relatively low price-point equipment, dating right back to its success in the 1970s with the VHS tape format. JVC products sometimes impact the broadcast mainstream but generally find greatest success in niche market segments such as news production where price and portability take priority over the no-comprise quality and robustness demanded by the leading studio-based and OB content producers.
