Ikegami Reports Ongoing Transition from HD-SDR to UHD-HDR and SDI to IP Broadcast Production Through 2022

Ikegami reports ongoing broadcast and professional media innovation throughout 2022 including the Unicam UHK-X750 IP-capable UHD HDR HFR camera plus the R2 Real Remote production system.

"UHD-HDR has replaced UHD-SDR as the default standard for consumer TV displays," says Michael Lätzsch, Broadcast & Professional Video Division Manager at Ikegami Electronics (Europe) GmbH. "This in turn has encouraged broadcast-focused production companies to invest in UHD-HDR camera systems. UHD-HDR content is becoming increasingly available online from dedicated streaming channels. A growing number of broadcasters are also supplementing their HD-SDR terrestrial and satellite transmissions with online UHD-SDR content."

Hiltron Experiences Year of Satcom Systems Innovation Posted: 20/12/2022
Hiltron Experiences Year of Satcom Systems Innovation

Hiltron Communications, a globally active satellite system integrator, manufacturer and distributor, reports a year of technical innovation throughout 2022.

A highlight project in Q2 was the completion of a satellite uplink and downlink system for one of Germany's largest television news broadcasters. This included six antennas plus control infrastructure for communicating with the network's associate organisations around the world. Hiltron software allows the system to be supervised via a single GUI showing all relevant performance parameters, confidence lights and alerts. De-icers in the antenna panels can be activated automatically if the rooftop temperature creates any risk of freezing. All six of the new antennas are being used to capture incoming signals. Hiltron also refurbished three existing antennas which function both as uplinks and downlinks. That part of the project included the provision and integration of Hiltron ACU antenna control units which are used to set the dish azimuth and elevation.

The Future of Broadcast Technology
Sebastian Richter

Spotlight on Sebastian Richter, Vice President Media Systems at Rohde & Schwarz.

We are currently in the middle of a transition phase with migration to several new technologies, from the move to IP-based infrastructure and the shift from linear to video-on-demand (VOD).
The question for all of us is how long that transition phase will last; it is going to be faster for some customers then for others – national broadcasters, for example – it will be a slower process.

The Future of Broadcast Technology
Manfred Reitmeier

Now that OTT and VOD have become more mainstream, many commentators talk about traditional broadcast methods, like terrestrial transmission, being a thing of the past. With so many new platforms and non-traditional content services carving out a growing slice of the market, you can be forgiven for thinking that linear over-the-air television is on its way out. The reality is that the industry must strike a balance between meeting consumers’ shifting habits and the business and operational needs of content providers.

A switch in time: how KVM can unlock the future of broadcasting
Chris Smeeton

One of the major changes for broadcasters during the pandemic has been the shift towards remote production; by no means a new phenomenon in an IP environment, yet accelerated under lockdown to accommodate travel and gathering restrictions. A 2021 report found that almost 40% of broadcast professionals now employ remote production, up 9% on the previous year.

Cloud integration: The only way is up
Francois Vaillant

In 2017 we saw the introduction of SMPTE 2110 and since then, the transition to IP has emerged as a priority for broadcasters looking to streamline their operations, decrease their footprint and effectively integrate with an industry in a rapid state of flux. A 2020 survey by Devoncroft found that almost 20% of broadcasters had already deployed SMPTE 2110, and over 25% were planning to do so. Then came the pandemic, precipitating the need for on-the-fly collaboration and accelerating the transition to remote, virtual and cloud production.

HOLLYLAND LARK 150 Review
Phil Vinter

The exponential growth of video supercharged a technological revolution that began in the early noughties with the advent of DSLR cameras.
The cinematic-style shallow depth of field image video quality from DSLRs was a revelation, but, back then audio was the big drawback. As demand has grown so the technology has improved and today’s one-man-band small rig set ups can capture pretty good sound into a DSLR style camera.

Phil Vinter reviews the latest release from HOLLYLAND and it's a thumbs up from us.
