Nash TV channel in Ukraine chooses two Calrec Artemis consoles for 24 7 news programming

Ukraine news TV channel Nash TV has purchased two 32-fader Artemis Light audio consoles for its Kiev-based 24/7 programming. Nash TV is a new customer and is a significant addition to Calrec’s success in the country.

Alexander Filipushko, Chief Sound Engineer at Nash TV, commented, “Our sound engineers are well educated on the current consoles on the market, and Calrec’s Artemis came out to be the ideal console for our needs given its quality of performance, with premium built-in processing and sophisticated networking options. We love having the ability to use both MADI and Dante cards. Currently we’re using MADI to integrate with multifunctional audio devices (including embedding and routing) and we’re using Dante to communicate with the wireless microphones in both of our studios, as well as for a second mixer.”

NUGEN Offers Unequalled Audio Post Plug-Ins for Music and Television Projects Posted: 08/11/2019
NUGEN Offers Unequalled Audio Post Plug-Ins for Music and Television Projects

As the top-line audio editing software brand for television and music mixers and producers around the world, NUGEN Audio has gained significant notoriety throughout the industry. When Mix Engineer Jorel Corpus received a copy of the company’s Producer bundle at an event surrounding the GRAMMY’s, he soon realized it was the perfect complement to his existing workflow for his range of music and television projects.

Corpus explains that prior to receiving the software, he had heard great things about NUGEN and, after using the plug-ins, he quickly realized the full breadth of the solutions’ benefits. “A lot of industry friends and colleagues who I trust use NUGEN,” he says. “I had wanted to use the company’s solutions for a while, so when I received the Producer bundle, it was perfect timing. As soon as I started to use NUGEN, I felt more assured. I use the Visualizer audio plug-in when clients send me files to immediately analyze if the signal is in mono or stereo. This organizes my resources and streamline my workflow better. I also use the Stereoizer and Stereoplacer tools regularly.”

The Authentic Sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano is Captured by DPA Posted: 07/11/2019
The Authentic Sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano is Captured by DPA

When musician and sound designer Paolo Principi was asked to record the authentic sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano for a new silent system and virtual instrument multi-sample, there was only one microphone brand that he felt could do the task justice – and that was DPA.

“I wanted to capture the rich and complex sounds of this piano in the most natural way,” Principi explains. “For this, it was important that I used the best solution for each element of the audio path. I chose DPA for the microphones, Vovox for the cables and Apogee for the converter because each of these brands is renowned for delivering high-quality audio without coloring the sound in any way.”

Principi, whose company, PSound, specializes in sampling and creating virtual instruments, says he was delighted when Fazioli asked him to record its flagship piano – the F278 Gran Coda. To accomplish this task, Principi chose two matched pairs of DPA 4006 Omnidirectional Microphones (including one pair with nose cones for a perfect response across the whole audio frequency range) and a pair of 4015 Wide Cardioid Microphones. These were supplied by DPA’s Italian distributor, M Casale Bauer, and used to record ‘binaural,’ ‘close’ and ‘side’ sounds respectively.

“I was really delighted by the naturalness, precision and detail that all the DPA microphones delivered,” adds Principi. “I was also very surprised by the linearity of their frequency response, especially for the off-axis sounds – thanks to the incredible nose cones.”

Principi recorded the piano note-by-note (all 88 keys) and across numerous dynamic levels (12 main levels, plus noises and different articulation levels), so that he could accurately capture its entire range of sounds. He also used a special machine to play each key with the same dynamic level and spent a great deal of time working out the best microphone position for each of the three sounds (binaural, close, side) that he was recording. He then listened to the audio in his own studio until he was sure he was obtaining the real sound of the instrument.

First Baptist Dallas Implements DPA Subminis For TV Broadcasts and Worldwide Streaming Posted: 31/10/2019
First Baptist Dallas Implements DPA Subminis For TV Broadcasts and Worldwide Streaming

Through broadcast and online digital channels, First Baptist Dallas’ reach expands beyond its in-house attendance. With a following that spans tens of thousands of worshippers, the megachurch takes its audio and video capabilities very seriously, looking to Lead Audio Engineer Brad Roberts to choose just the right gear. Most recently, Roberts became one of the first U.S. users of DPA Microphones’ new 6066 CORE Subminiature Headset Microphone, relying on its capabilities to provide a discreet, high-quality sound for the church’s lead pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress.

“I chose to upgrade the lead pastor’s microphone to DPA’s 6066 because of its impressively small capsule and redesigned headset—for such an unobtrusive solution, the sound quality is impeccable,” explains Roberts. “The 6066 is completely hidden from close-up HD camera shots and its non-reflective boom further improves the aesthetic, as it does not catch undesirable stage light.”

The church’s arsenal of DPA microphones also includes numerous 4061 Omnidirectional Microphones for acoustic pianos and violins in the band, a 4098 Supercardioid Gooseneck Microphone at the podium, the 4018VL Vocal Microphone when a handheld mic is needed and a wide array of 4066 Omnidirectional Headset Microphones in all 12 of its worship venues. Roberts relies on the headset mics most often during speaking/teaching presentations, baptisms and drama productions, including the church’s annual Christmas concert. Together, these solutions provide Roberts with the audio quality he desires for these large services, where all eyes—and ears—are tuned in closely.

Atomos Acquisition of Timecode Systems Makes Effortless Collaborative Filmmaking an On-Set Reality Posted: 29/10/2019
Atomos Acquisition of Timecode Systems Makes Effortless Collaborative Filmmaking an On-Set Reality

Timecode Systems today announces an exciting new chapter for the company as part of Atomos. Together, the companies are building tightly integrated multicamera workflow solutions that unify all recording devices on set, allowing these devices to work together more cohesively. This allows production teams to experience, for the first time, the full impact of truly collaborative video and audio content creation across all types of program making.

With demand for video bigger than ever, content creators are using more separate devices to add angles and be creative. But they are limited by the time it takes to edit, align, and finish videos that combine multiple sources of video and audio, especially when using prosumer and consumer devices to film alongside professional cameras.

Jeromy Young, CEO and founder of Atomos said:
"Right now, this disconnect between recording devices is holding back multicamera content creation. To truly shoot collaboratively, everything needs to work in perfect, frame-accurate sync — there has to be a robust wireless connection. The Timecode Systems RF protocol is this bulletproof link. Working together, we now have the glue to create a truly connected multicamera solution."

Timecode Systems, a world leader in developing wireless sync technology, burst onto the market in 2012, receiving a prestigious IABM award for innovation before even shipping its first product. The company launched the first-ever Wi-Fi-enabled digislate, created the only timecode sync solution for GoPro® cameras, and pioneered and patented a timecode-over-Bluetooth® timing protocol. The acquisition positions Timecode Systems and Atomos to accelerate this appetite for innovation further and transform content-creation workflows.

Leader LV5600 Test Instruments Chosen for TVNs UE6 4K HDR OB Truck Posted: 23/10/2019
Leader LV5600 Test Instruments Chosen for TVNs UE6 4K HDR OB Truck

TVN MOBILE PRODUCTION has chosen Leader LV5600 test instruments as the technical reference for its newly completed UE6 4K HDR OB truck, reported to be the largest of its kind in Europe. Built in partnership between TVN and Sony, the vehicle is optimised for high quality UHD, HD and mixed format production in both HDR and SDR. Its first deployment was at the Northern Ireland v Germany UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier in Belfast in September.

"Leader's LV5600 provides all the test and measurement facilities we need both in the SDI and IP domains," says TVN CEO Markus Osthaus. "We have invested in three units – one for each of our production galleries and the third for the associated tender vehicle. The instruments pack a lot of features into a very compact space, including 4K, HD, HDR and SDR signal analysis. They are particularly useful for matching incoming video feeds including up to 30 Sony HDC-4300 UHD cameras."

""Shooting in 4K UHD requires very precise signal monitoring from the the initial point of capture right through the production and post-production chain," adds Leader's European Regional Development Manager, Kelvin Salvidge. "The LV5600 and its LV7600 rasterising equivalent are no-compromise test instruments which we see becoming the reference of choice both in the mobile and studio-based markets. Their ability to handle SDI and IP makes them truly future-proof."

Leader's LV5600 is a mains-powered SDI/IP waveform monitor in a half-rack width 3U desktop chassis with a touch-screen front panel display. It provides all the facilities needed to monitor UHD/HD/SD SDI as well as video-over-IP signals seamlessly in a hybrid operating environment. Engineering-related features include test pattern generation, eye pattern display, closed-caption monitoring, CIE colour chart, high dynamic range measurement, focus assist, customisable screen layout, tally interface, 4K/UHD operation, 10G IP input and 12G-SDI interfaces. SMPTE 2022-6, SMPTE 2022-7 and SMPTE 2110 protocols are all supported. The LV5600 also incorporates Leader's intuitive Cinezone and Cinelite which are familiar to many content production staff.

Taking a Stand at IBC - The Future of Exhibiting Clouds
Julian Wright If you’re reading KitPlus you probably don’t need us to tell you that, each year, the IBC Show attracts 1,700 exhibitors, each parting with a significant sum of money for the privilege of touting their wares from the darkened halls for five whole days. For the last eight years Blue Lucy has been one of these exhibitors and the show has always more than paid for itself in generating new business, as well as the less directly-tangible benefits from partnerships and networking opportunities.

IBC 2019 A Whistle Stop Rundown
Ben Sherriff I’ve been to IBC once before, taking to the floor with Simon, Matt, Jon and the rest of the KitPlus team to assist with the filming of interviews. This was a lot of fun, but it was hard to find the time to look at the kit I wanted to see. This year with the demise of BVE and unable to make it to the Media Production Show I decided to fork out for a ‘research’ trip to IBC. In the spirit of full disclosure, I ought to note that I have two small children and a very busy work schedule, so the trip had nothing to do with escaping for a weekend of uninterrupted sleep and meal times (honest). Due to these commitments I could only manage one full day and a few hours the next day at the show so it was a lot to cram in trying to see everything I wanted to see!

A Place For Placements - TVFutures
Luca Di-Maio I've been interested in media all my life… making short films with my mates in Windows Movie Maker when I was little... I never really knew where I wanted to go career wise, but I knew I always liked video production. So it will come as no surprise that I chose a degree that would provide that outlet, and I hoped that dedicating three Years to studying BSc Television and Broadcasting at the University of Portsmouth would turn my fantasy career, into reality.

Live Streaming Workflows Examined
Bryce Button In today’s hyperconnected world, audiences expect accessible, high quality content across the displays they see every day, whether at home or on the go, at a concert or church service, or even in the board room. There are a number of approaches professionals can take to deliver live content, but each workflow ultimately varies depending upon the delivery platform and the type of display that it’s intended for. There is no one-size fits all approach.

Creating A Signature Look With Lighting
William Hellmuth As an LA-based DP, I view my role as a narrative storyteller. For me, cinematography is not just about getting some nice images – it’s about telling truths. I love being able to weave a story with imagery and capture something that’s real, whether through performance or visual symbolism. Lighting is one of my most important mechanisms for capturing those moments of truth.

Never Stop Learning....Or Spending
Peter Heaven I’m over 75, and have been a member of the Bristol Film and Video Society (www.bristolvideo.org.uk) for several decades. Like the great majority of members, I am not and never have been a video professional but have video interests beyond the club and its productions. For some time I have been recording lectures (for other clubs) using a Panasonic HDC-HS100, a lovely little hand-held camera recording Full-HD 1920x1080i which has given very good service. But it has a 3.5mm jack for an external mic and this proved limiting, so I looked for a small mic mixer.
