KitchenFish Counts on FOR-A Video Switcher and nbsp;for Reliable Coverage of Daily Lottery Broadcast and nbsp;

KitchenFish LLC, the video production company responsible for the nightly broadcast coverage of the South Carolina Education Lottery, is using a new FOR-A HVS-390HS video switcher for its productions. Located a few blocks from the state capitol, the KitchenFish studio hosts the nightly lottery drawings, and also supports live shots of state and local officials for national news outlets. The switcher was installed on April 14 and used for that evening’s production.

“We need to show all these graphics and video inserts simultaneously, and the new FORA switcher gives us a lot of flexibility,” said Jim Simmons, chief engineer for KitchenFish. “Price made a difference, but reliability is the one thing that has to be foremost, because we don’t have a second chance.

CRYSTAL VISION RELEASES FEATURE-PACKED COLOUR CORRECTOR Posted: 27/05/2020
CRYSTAL VISION RELEASES FEATURE-PACKED COLOUR CORRECTOR

Crystal Vision has released its most feature-packed colour corrector and legaliser to date. The M-COCO-2 is Crystal Vision's first dual channel colour corrector, helping broadcasters save money by being 24% cheaper per channel than the company's alternative product. The M-COCO-2's ability to work with IP, with SDI or with both IP and SDI at the same time makes it the industry's first colour corrector to offer IP connectivity (supporting both SMPTE ST 2022 and ST 2110 video), while its extensive features also make it a good solution for hybrid systems as well as fully SDI installations. These features include unique new adjustments including two Y stretches ideal for correcting the contrast on in-shot monitors, as well as support for an increased number of video standards (31 in total) and a built-in test pattern generator for an easier workflow. Like all of Crystal Vision's IP/SDI video processing products, the M-COCO-2 is a software app that runs on the MARBLE-V1 media processor hardware, a card housed in the Vision frame which features a powerful CPU/GPU processor and both SDI and 10GbE IP network interface connections.

Magewell Expands Recording and Live Streaming Capabilities in Ultra Stream Encoders Posted: 26/05/2020
Magewell Expands Recording and Live Streaming Capabilities in Ultra Stream Encoders

Magewellhas released a new upgrade for its Ultra Stream family of live streaming encoder hardware that further enhances the devices’ versatility. Available in all new units and as a free firmware update for existing customers, version 1.3 adds flexible new recording modes plus support for the RTSP streaming protocol.

Magewell’s Ultra Stream encoders make live streaming remarkably simple even for non-professional users, enabling them to record or stream high-quality video with one click using on-device buttons, a browser-based web interface or an intuitive smartphone app. Designed for users who want to stream but may have minimal technical knowledge, the compact devices are ideal for addressing the increased need for live streaming created by today’s stay-at-home and social distancing restrictions.

In addition to streaming live to popular services or a custom server, Ultra Stream encoders can record video as files to a directly connected USB drive, internal storage, or an associated smartphone. The new update enables recording to the device’s built-in storage or attached USB drive with the option to automatically start recording when a stable input signal is detected, and a continuous, loop-like recording mode that automatically deletes the oldest saved clip to make room when storage fills up.

CTV Invests in Leader Master Reference Test Instruments Posted: 18/05/2020
CTV Invests in Leader Master Reference Test Instruments

CTV, one of Europe's longest established providers of mobile television production facilities, has chosen Leader LV7300 and LV7600 rasterizing waveform monitors as master reference instruments for its OB3 and OB12 outside broadcast vehicles.

"Leader test instruments have proved highly reliable, efficient and operator friendly right back to our first purchase of LV7770 multi-SDI rasterizers six years ago," comments Paul Francis, CTV's Chief Technical Officer. "Some of the projects we work on are massive in scale, taking in feeds from well over 100 cameras. High-precision monitoring of HD and UHD signal flow is vital, both to achieve accurate matching of incoming feeds and to ensure that we are maintaining the full available dynamic range from source right through to output. This latest purchase comprises 12 LV7300 and two LV7600 instruments. Both models can be fully operated from the front panel which, combined with their compact size, makes them ideal for use in OB suites.  The LV7300 and LV7600 have a very similar control menu structure so operators can move freely between them. The resultant measurements are precise, repeatable and can be copied off to USB memory for easy logging or sharing."

Leader LV5350 and LV7300 Test Instruments Chosen for Major African Football Tournament

Leader LV5350 portable waveform monitors and LV7300 rasterizers have been chosen as reference test instruments for broadcast television coverage of a major football tournament scheduled to be held next year in Cameroon. The games are scheduled to take place in January and February at city venues for live transmission across Africa and around the world. The instruments are being provided by Leader Europe's Brussels-based distribution partner Studiotech SA.

"The LV5350 encapsulates in a compact and portable unit all the features OB and studio gallery colorists need for matching multiple camera channels," says Studiotech's General Manager Nicolas Tardieu. "Live stage and sports events send adrenaline levels very high for TV production teams as well as the contestants. Dependable and easy-to-navigate tools are essential. With its integral multi-view monitor screen, the LV5350 is exceptionally easy to configure and control. The LV5350 and LV7300 incorporate practically every reference tool OB technicians need for live signal evaluation plus the drill-down facilities required during initial system line-up and continuity checks."

Anevia Adds Multi-tiered Storage to its Cloud DVR Storage Offering Posted: 20/05/2020
Anevia Adds Multi-tiered Storage to its Cloud DVR Storage Offering

Anevia announces the addition of multi-tiered storage to its Cloud DVR storage offering, Embedded Distributed Storage (EDS). This new feature makes EDS even more cost-efficient and scalable while also enabling storage in the cloud – meaning the solution becomes both flexible and elastic.

TV service providers are increasingly enriching their VOD content and need to expand their storage capacity without a commensurate increase in the number of users. The original hyper-convergent design of the scalable, high-performance EDS calls for more servers to be added to increase streaming and storage capacity in parallel. Multi-tiered storage means it is now possible to also increase storage capacity independently of streaming capacity.

With only a small fraction of the VOD catalogue being consumed regularly, long-tail content can be stored more efficiently and cost-effectively on general-purpose ‘cold storage’ support used by the IT departments. This eliminates the need to buy new servers and the related software licences, cutting both the complexity and the cost of scaling for a given number of users.

The newly introduced feature also enables object storage, which opens up the possibility of storing in the public or private cloud. This brings the advantages of scalability, flexibility and elasticity.

Accurate Ad Tracking with OTT
Tim Armstrong As viewers embrace and transition to OTT, the opportunities and flexibility provided to advertisers are growing fast. However, like all technology shifts, this transition hasn’t come without challenges. Some technology used to monetise video over the years has resulted in a less-than-ideal viewing experience, with disruptive transitions and buffering two of the main issues. The good news is that advances in ad insertion technology mean content providers can now deliver a seamless OTT viewing experience, as well as addressable advertising options. This paves the way for the delivery of high-quality ad viewing while growing the advertiser's ROI.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

Synced Across Multiple Screens
Christof Haslauer Live TV viewing habits around the world are changing. This is especially true with audiences under 30 who prefer to consume Live TV on their mobile devices rather than on a large screen TV. One of the major reasons for this change is the lack of options for personalisation of content on Linear TV.
