Sony PDW-U1

Sony PDW-U1

compact, mobile and highly cost-effective drive, usable in the field or at the desktop.

It can handle professional disc media (PFD23/PFD23A) recorded in SD or HD formats, as well as the new “dual-layer” discs (PFD50DLA). The PDW-U1 serves as an external drive via a standard USB connection.

The drive allows direct access to recorded material from either a PC or Mac based platform – and provides all the necessary drivers/utilities to enable this. XDCAM is already widely supported by many industry leading vendors and the PDW-U1 will be no exception. For example - it will be an ideal and affordable system for fast transfer of material into non-linear editors.

The PDW-U1 – the simple yet effective bridge between the camera and the PC.

Sony and rsquo;s VENICE motion picture camera provides unprecedented flexibility for filmmakers with the addition of extension system and new firmware

Sony’s VENICE motion picture camera, which has been embraced by the production community, will enhance its usability and flexibility with the VENICE Extension System and Version 3.0 firmware updates in February 2019. The lightweight (1.9 kg with PL mount and 1.4 kg with E-mount), easy to use tethered extension system allows the camera body to detach from the image sensor block with no degradation in image quality, from 2.7 m or 5.5 m apart, offering a highly configurable and portable method of operation. The new Extension System is compatible with existing and new VENICE cameras. A user can quickly configure and freely use only VENICE’s image sensor block to capture uncompromising imagery on site, customising the camera for specific scenarios.

Sony unveils new 4K HDR reference monitor and launches TRIMASTER HX brand

At IBC 2018, Sony announced a new 31-inch Grade 1 reference monitor, the BVM-HX310, which offers accurate colour reproduction and high-contrast performance to provide professional content creatives the assurance in critical picture decisions. The launch of the new reference monitor also marks the introduction of Sonys new technology brand TRIMASTER HX. The BVM-HX310 has been created in response to the industrys desire to overcome the challenge of accurate picture evaluation, especially in relation to black reproducibility. It is able to accurately reproduce images down to individual pixels thanks to a combination of the Sony specified and dedicated panel and its newly developed display processing technology. It is also fully capable of reproducing 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content, supports industry standard brightness of up to 1,000 nits in full-screen and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio for HDR productions.

Sony HDC-4800 Review
Andy McKenzie First announced at NAB 2016, the Sony HDC-4800 is a studio camera system capable of shooting 4K/UHD at up to 8x or full HD at up to 16x. With a price point upwards of £250,000 it is a very high-end product with a wide feature set. In Sony's own words, "This is the future of live production, designed to satisfy the storytelling aspect of modern sports production.” Deliveries began in mid 2017 and, after careful preliminary evaluation, we invested in several systems for our hire fleet ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A Sound in Motion QA
Antonio Morais “A Sound in Motion started as a camera test for the new Sony VENICE CineAlta 6K Digital Cinema Camera and evolved into a much bigger project. The film, presented by Golpe Filmes and released this summer, was directed/edited by Ricardo Teixeira. It is a fictional story based on the way deaf people adapt themselves to daily life situations. The intent of the film is to be a positive influence in the way people think about the ‘differences in human beings’ and about issues related to social inclusion, but without turning it into something moralistic or that seems fundamentalist. Through sounds not speech, words or verbal expression we want to relay a positive message and display a clear gaze upon that difference.”

Investing in the Future of Broadcast Media
Clive Northen At the time of writing, the summer World Cup is providing its usual challenge to camera crews trying to televise the bright sunlight of the stadium without losing detail in shaded areas such as the covered terraces. It is a perfect demonstration of the need for high dynamic range. Several broadcasters are experimentally covering this year's tournament in 4K HDR, including the BBC which is streaming dozens of matches via its iPlayer service. HDR is also accompanied by a wider colour space, meaning millions more colours can be displayed than previously. Yet another advance is the adoption of 50p delivery rather than traditional 50i.

Slow Motion Video Techniques
Phil Well, those kinds of higher frame rates still pretty much belong to the big guns. The Phantom Flex will give you 2,000 frames a second at ultra HD or 1,000 fps at 4K. It produces truly stunning images, but at a price that is beyond the reach of all but those with the biggest budgets. The camera retails at a cool £100,000 (I’ll have three please) with a daily hire out charge of around £3,000 (including lighting and a technician). IDT’s OS series cameras produce equally high quality images at a cheaper price, but you’re still talking tens of thousands.
