Mistika Overview

Mistika is a flexible high-end post production system capable of SD, HD, 2K, and stereoscopic 3D with real-time ARRI, RED Camera and other native data workflows. It seamlessly integrates timeline-based editing, conforming, infinite-layer compositing, colour grading and image restoration all in one complete solution, with various toolsets working together in the timeline.

Some of Mistikas Creative Capabilities include:

  • Multilayer 2K/HD/SD editing in real-time;
  • Direct conform from tape and tapeless cameras, data files, r3d, and so forth;
  • Intuitive multi-layer editing for image and audio;
  • Advanced image restoration grain & noise management, including Motion Estimation techniques;
  • Interactive Paint tools;
  • Advanced colour correction in real-time;
  • Real-time compositing in true stereo 3D space, with stereo 3D camera views;
  • Advanced effects, including multilayer keying, filters, key-framing, warp, text, lights, tree display, etc;
  • Optical Flow processing;
  • Multi-mastering to all formats &
  • Advanced Stereoscopic tools.

Significantly, Mistika performs all of these functions without the use of any proprietary hardware file formats, storage systems, or processes, resulting in a truly open, versatile and flexible system. Mistika is based on off-shelf hardware, with the top-of-the-range systems utilising standard HP PCs, with Nvidia graphics cards, and SAN. For on-set work Mistika can also run on HP Laptops, providing scene-to-screen workflows.

Open & Flexible System
Unlike many of its competitors, Mistika employs an open storage policy. Mistika can provide storage for any other product that allows connection to generic file systems. This allows Mistika to be easily integrated into an existing facility, because files of many different formats can be easily exchanged. With Mistika, it is also possible to develop custom scripts to aid integration and automate common functions

Technical Capabilities include:

  • 16 bit per channel floating point processes
  • Support for Linux 32bit and 64bit systems
  • Native support for many image file formats
  • 3D LUT support
  • HDR image support
  • Motion Estimation based processing
  • Real-time non-destructive processes for most effects
  • Ability to background process any effect or process that cant be performed real-time
The ensuant Speed and Power that this standard hardware provides is outstanding. Mistikas capabilities include real-time, non-destructive operations without the need for rendering, at 2K resolutions, with multiple layers and multiple creative effects. Mistika can do this because it has been programmed to maximise multiple CPU and multiple thread processing, combined with maximum GPU acceleration. No other post-production system comes close, and the result is unrivalled speed with many effects requiring no processing or rendering whatsoever.

Speed Benchmarks include:

  • Full colour grading of 2K DPX files without rendering
  • Real-time motion estimated slow motion at up to 2K resolution
  • Real-time, full resolution Stereoscopic 3D colour grading, convergence, and effects at up to 2K per channel.
  • Many additional real-time functions, including advanced RED camera workflows 2D and 3D.

The Open Architecture and Open Storage approach of Mistika also enables any third-party systems to have direct access to the systems storage and files, providing for a truly open workflow. Internally, Mistika also uses Open Formats at the highest Bit-depth Quality, with true 16 bit floating point per channel processes, HDR support, 8K+ resolution support, with optical quality processing based on Fourier mathematics. Native File Format support includes many industry standards, from DPX to DNxHD, from TIFF and TGA, to EXR and HDR, from RED r3d to Weinberger, and many, many more.

RAW file camera based projects

Mistika can decompress and grade images from RAW camera files, sucj as RED, ARRI, Phantom, CineForm, amongst many others, in real-time without any importing or cross conversion processes. By working directly from the RAW files, Mistika retains access to RAW meta-data, such as exposure, white balance and gamma curve settings, whilst also benefiting from more efficient usage of image storage space. Many other products that claim to support RAW files, do so by first converting the files to their own convenient format, which takes up time for cross conversion, uses more disk space to hold larger files and loses access to the underlying meta-data. One of the strongest features of Mistika is its colour correction functions which can compete with any stand-alone grading system. Combining this grading power with direct and real-time access to RAW files creates an extremely capable and efficient RAW file-based workflow.

Stereoscopic 3D Workflow

Mistika has arguably the most advanced and developed Stereo 3D post production tools in the market, which has lead to BSkyB placing it at the core of their workflow for example. Post Facilities companies such as The Framestore, On Sight, BTV Post, Park Road Post, amongst many others, base their stereo 3D strategy upon it. Mistikas advanced features include optical recognition between left and right cameras to aid the rapid correction of inherent stereo problems, such as camera pairs that are not exactly aligned.

Mistika also allows its very strong colour grading functions to be applied to both image streams at the same time, or to just the left or right as need be. Compositing can also be carried out in 3D. Mistikas real-time stereo tools including colour grading, convergence adjustments and camera error correction, as well as some very advanced features such as retrospective adjustment of the cameras interocular distance have left the market stunned by its remarkable ability.

A Sound in Motion QA
Antonio Morais “A Sound in Motion started as a camera test for the new Sony VENICE CineAlta 6K Digital Cinema Camera and evolved into a much bigger project. The film, presented by Golpe Filmes and released this summer, was directed/edited by Ricardo Teixeira. It is a fictional story based on the way deaf people adapt themselves to daily life situations. The intent of the film is to be a positive influence in the way people think about the ‘differences in human beings’ and about issues related to social inclusion, but without turning it into something moralistic or that seems fundamentalist. Through sounds not speech, words or verbal expression we want to relay a positive message and display a clear gaze upon that difference.”

Investing in the Future of Broadcast Media
Clive Northen At the time of writing, the summer World Cup is providing its usual challenge to camera crews trying to televise the bright sunlight of the stadium without losing detail in shaded areas such as the covered terraces. It is a perfect demonstration of the need for high dynamic range. Several broadcasters are experimentally covering this year's tournament in 4K HDR, including the BBC which is streaming dozens of matches via its iPlayer service. HDR is also accompanied by a wider colour space, meaning millions more colours can be displayed than previously. Yet another advance is the adoption of 50p delivery rather than traditional 50i.

Cellular Network Congestion at the Royal Wedding
Rob Waters As with all major events, planning for the Royal Wedding and surveying potential broadcast locations and securing reliable connectivity for video over IP workflows was top of mind for Canada’s Global TV. For major live broadcasts, in particular, when the entire world is watching, an extremely high degree of confidence is crucial because the live feeds need to be transmitted without fail.

How machine learning might affect media
Bruce Devlin - new I have a curious relationship with technology. I’ve been doing it all my life and I see topics come and go over the years. This is the 3rd time around that I’ve seen Artificial Intelligence become trendy and this time, I think it will stick. There are 4 things that are different this time around and they are (in alphabetical order) Amazon, IBM, Google, Microsoft. All of those companies have had AI research programs running for years, but the big change now is that there is enough ubiquitous compute resource in the form of the cloud to make it commercially viable to build products around the platforms.

Will we soon be paying our respects to PayTV
Malcolm Harland Recent reports show pay TV in the US peaked in 2012 and will keep dropping over the next five years. Digital TV Research’s North America Pay TV Forecasts state the US will see a 20% drop between 2012 and 2023. Should the UK be readying for a similar change in consumer viewing, or is something different happening here?

State of the Nation
Dick Hobbs - new

I am writing this in the middle of a record-breaking heatwave in southern England. Yet it is time to be thinking about the mists and mellow fruitfulness of autumn, or at least the predictably damp and chilly Amsterdam when IBC hits town.

What will be the hot talking points of IBC this year? I am not in a position to talk about what the big vendors will be showing: I have so far received just the one preview press release (take a bow, Calrec).

What is next after University
Ruta Kairyte

I currently find myself in between two landmark moments. A few weeks ago I was completely immersed in producing live television content, and in a few weeks time I will become an official BSc (Hons) Television & Broadcasting graduate from the University of Portsmouth. When I look back at who I was in my first year of university, I remember a shy girl from the other side of Europe, unsure at whether a career in television was the right path to take. Now, after three years of university, I can definitely say that I made the best choice of my life by choosing this degree. I’m leaving university confident and motivated, knowing that I made the right choice in study, and I really want that career in the television industry.
