Mediaproxy helps broadcasters meet challenges of remote workflows Posted: 08/06/2020
Mediaproxy helps broadcasters meet challenges of remote workflows

Mediaproxy, the leading provider of software-based IP broadcast solutions, has been at the forefront of developing new television distribution workflows over the last 20 years. A major part of this has involved allowing increased remote operation of key functions such as monitoring and analyzing streams to ensure quality and compliance with international standards and national regulations.

There has been a growing interest in the potential of remote working over the last five years, particularly in allowing the coverage of news and sports events with smaller crews under the direct control of the main studio gallery. But the coronavirus crisis has forced a major rethink of how TV programs are not only produced but also monitored and distributed.

Mediaproxy has been able to offer its users, who include leading broadcast networks, streaming service operators and facilities, the flexibility to perform quality control (QC) and compliance monitoring away from the main master control room (MCR) or network operations center (NOC).

SubtitleNEXT allows for remote online study and work Posted: 13/05/2020
SubtitleNEXT allows for remote online study and work

When it was announced that colleges and universities would have to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hellenic American College in Athens was in an immediate position to be able to transfer onsite courses to synchronous online sessions.

With the help of the SubtitleNEXT platform, chosen for the Masters in Translation (MAT) Program and Audio-visual Translation Lab, students are currently able to continue working on SubtitleNEXT remotely to complete their courses without disruption.

SubtitleNEXT is a flexible subtitling timed-text system that can run on different types of hardware. With the cooperation of the SubtitleNEXT team, the educational set-up was quickly adapted for remote working and virtual study. The powerful features in SubtitleNEXT and the collective team spirit have allowed students to continue their learning, and it will enable them to progress to the next stage of their educational journey.

Hellenic American College in Athens is a dynamic institution with lecturers who had already embraced and adopted SubtitleNEXT last year for its MAT program, arming a future generation with knowledge of how to effectively localize content for every major studio, OTT platform, and broadcast company to meet global consumer demand. The MAT is one of 14 academic degree programs of the US-accredited Hellenic American University which the College offers in Greece. Students in the MAT program acquire the credentials to begin a career in translation, audio-visual translation and editing.

DejaSoft extends half-price offer of DejaEdit licenses until end of July to assist with Remote Collaboration Posted: 28/04/2020
DejaSoft extends half-price offer of DejaEdit licenses until end of July to assist with Remote Collaboration

DejaSoft further assists with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak by extending its 50% discount on all DejaEdit licenses until end of July.

CEO Clas Hakeröd, “At this unprecedented time, we are extending our offer of 50% off all DejaEdit licenses. We hope to help studios, production companies, post production facilities and remote teams using Avid's creative tools. The deal is designed to help professionals complete their projects and to support them on any new work they undertake over this period.”

“As editors adapt to circumstances caused by the global pandemic, we continue to offer assistance to post and production communities to sustain a much-valued industry.” DejaSoft’s CTO Nikolai Waldman.

DejaEdit is a revolutionary utility that enables editors and operators to collaborate between multiple remote Avid editing platforms. It ensures that media and timelines created or imported in one connected system are shared and mirrored to the local or network storage of other connected systems. This takes place automatically, quickly and securely in the background, using an internet connection.

Applications include allowing multiple remote editors to work together on a single project, or speeding up file exchanges between location-based editors, DITs, and VFX houses, or allowing projects to be accessed anywhere, anytime, maintaining a robust and up-to-date local copy of all required media files.

Work from home options available for Mediaproxy monitoring systems Posted: 28/04/2020
Work from home options available for Mediaproxy monitoring systems

Mediaproxy, the leading provider of software-based IP broadcast solutions, is helping its customers ensure their output of the highest technical quality at a time when many operational staff are having to work from home. The company's compliance analysis and logging systems can be accessed remotely using laptop computers to allow all confidence monitoring to be carried out.

The coronavirus crisis has made broadcasters dramatically reassess not only how programs are produced, but also how distribution operations are managed. The move to both IT and IP-based broadcast infrastructures had already made it possible for technicians to access systems from wherever they are. This option is now widely available, meaning broadcast centers can still run efficiently, while, at the same, time allowing self-isolation and social distancing guidelines to be observed.

How JetStream Accelerated File Transfer Helps Remote Teams Posted: 17/03/2020
How JetStream Accelerated File Transfer Helps Remote Teams

Remote working has grown by 173% since 2005. This rate will only increase as more companies instruct employees to work from home to slow the spread of COVID-19. During times of self-isolation, technology allows organisations to adapt working arrangements and remain productive at the same time. The speed at which teams share large files impacts how effectively they can work together.

File Transfer Acceleration

As companies enact work from home policies in an effort to keep their employees healthy, they may be challenged to maintain productivity. JetStream uses UDP file transfer acceleration protocol. Team members can collaborate faster wherever they are.

Transfer Once for Fast File Transfers

JetStream enables point-to-point transfers. Files are sent directly from the source to the destination and never at rest in a middle holding area, keeping data safer.

Scale Users As Needed

JetStream provides unlimited user connections at no additional cost. As a result, organisations can scale users as needed, especially when more and more workers are staying home.

State of the Nation and Virtual Social Distancing

CLASS Is Remote Cloud Working the New Norm
Bruce Devlin - new The Tuk-tuk driver has just dropped us off at the hotel in Jaipur. The guard has let us through the gates, past the dogs and the obligatory cow rummaging in the garbage. Why Renting is the New Buying
Ed Tischler To rent or to buy? This has long been a topic of debate in the world of property, with people having to choose between spending virtually all of their money up front or giving their money away each month with little chance of seeing a return.

Control, as easy as pressing a button
Bazile Peter

A fundamental issue with control surfaces in modern broadcast operations is that they are, for the most part, old fashioned.

The ease, responsiveness, and functionality of touchscreens, especially in Smartphones are now commonplace. Attributes that are largely absent from touchscreens are typically buttons, sliders, and dials found on many control devices associated with human machine interaction.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

The Networking Revolution

Whether it is another app for your phone, checking for a faster route on your sat-nav, or a changeable hotel booking, the more options we have, the better! Flexibility is fantastic.
