One choice that ticks all the boxes....Peli cases Posted: 20/03/2020
One choice that ticks all the boxes and hellip;.Peli cases

Documentary television cameraman Jonathan Young has relied on Peli cases to protect and transport his valuable camera kit for over 20 years. He has travelled with Peli cases to the most inhospitable and sometimes downright dangerous locations throughout the world, including war torn Afghanistan and Gaza.

He has embarked on his latest adventure with several new Peli Air cases; these have been designed and engineered to maintain the same level of durability, but reduce the weight of each case by up to 40 percent. Air cases are waterproof and crushproof and offer additional sizes to the Peli Protector and Peli Storm case lines.

Jonathan explained “I am shooting the new series, the South America leg of The America’s with Simon Reeve for BBC. This is the first leg of the journey across the Guyana Shield; Southern Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana.

These pictures were taken at the top of a Tepui. A Tepui is where the indigenous people’s gods live. They are sacred spaces that are 2800m above sea level. When working and camping at that altitude in such a rugged terrain, you have to be able to rely on the equipment you bring with you. To protect that equipment from the elements - sand, rain and the rough handling in transport to the top of the mountain in a cargo net slung under a helicopter, there is only one choice that ticks all the boxes…Peli cases.

The new Air range has taken every single journey I have made across various remote parts of the globe, housing my camera kit in its stride. I had worried at first that the cases might be too thin. My fears were unfounded. The cases I have used, they have taken every beating and battering baggage handlers, airports, rough tracks in pickups and the exposure to the elements. They have done exactly what they were supposed to do.”

The Peli Air range is now available in 16 sizes with more colour choices for many models. Deep cases and a long version, the 1745, have recently been added to the range.

Georgian TV Broadcaster Rustavi 2 Chooses PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box Posted: 20/03/2020
Georgian TV Broadcaster Rustavi 2 Chooses PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box

Georgian free-to-air television channel Rustavi 2 has chosen PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box servers as the core of a new high-definition broadcast playout system at its headquarters in Tbilisi. The project includes two systems, configured for operation in main and backup roles. It was completed in co-operation with systems integrator Broadcast Technologies Ltd which is itself based in Tbilisi.

"We recently decided to modernise our playout facilities to increase the channel's operational efficiency," comments George Gocha Kumsiashvili, Director of Production & Technical Support at Rustavi 2. "PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box meets our requirements exactly in terms of technical performance, ease of use, interconnectivity and reliability. It is also very compact which both simplifies installation and conserves space in our central apparatus room."

"Rustavi2 purchased a separate ListBox Neo playlist preparation and scheduling license for each server," adds Sergei Kazaryants, Director of Operations at Broadcast Technologies Ltd. "Both servers are used in conjunction with a Guramex vision mixer, interfaced via an automation module. Part of our role was to ensure the automation was programmed to achieve the closest possible integration. This was achieved quickly and easily and the complete system is now fully on air."

Black News Channel Launches with Brightline LED Fixtures Posted: 12/03/2020
Black News Channel Launches with Brightline LED Fixtures

Black News Channel, which launched on Feb. 10 and is the nation’s only African American news network, features a dynamic news set lit with Brightline L1.2 and L1.4 SeriesONE LED soft light fixtures. Designed by Devlin Design Group in Scottsdale, Ariz., the main set features a news desk, two large LED video wall areas, and a small interview set. RGB lighting elements – including hanging set pieces, walkways, and video wall backlights – created some talent lighting challenges. Lighting designer Bill Holshevnikoff said Brightline has “great control options on their fixtures, so you can make sure you’re not spilling light on the RGB elements and spoiling the color.”

PlayBox Neo to Demo Service-Based Virtual-Channel Broadcast Production and Playout at CABSAT 2020

PlayBox Neo will demonstrate its full range of broadcast playout and channel branding solutions to CABSAT 2020 attendees at the Dubai World Trade Centre, March 31st - April 2nd. Highlights of the exhibit on stand E4-20 in hall 4 will be the PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box system and the software-as-a-service-based Cloud2TV.

"Our products are built on 20 years of solid experience working with customers ranging in size from globally active broadcast networks to independent channel owners and playout service providers," says PlayBox Neo CEO Pavlin Rahnev. "They include major players in the MENA market such as BHS, EutelSat, Gulsat, Nilesat and ViewMedia, to mention just a few."

"We continue to lead the way in terms of product robustness, refinement, scalability and versatility. Central to our success is modularity, giving operators the ability to perform any or every function involved in television content preparation, from ingest, QC, transcoding, graphic branding and scheduling right through to transmission."

"MENA broadcasters, like their colleagues around the world, are looking for maximum reliability and creative efficiency. Our CABSAT demonstration will show how easy PlayBox Neo systems are to deploy and, thanks to the intuitive PlayBox Neo graphic interface, very easy operate."

Anevia Cloud-Native NEA-CDN v5 to Make CABSAT Debut Posted: 06/03/2020
Anevia Cloud-Native NEA-CDN and reg; v5 to Make CABSAT Debut

Anevia, a leading provider of OTT and IPTV software solutions, will introduce the latest version of its NEA-CDN® content delivery network solution to Middle East broadcasters and media channel managers attending the CABSAT 2020 exhibition and conference in Dubai, March 31st – April 2nd. NEA-CDN v5 makes it easy for operators to scale their OTT services for peak viewing within minutes by simply adding nodes to their CDN – and then removing them when they are no longer required.

As the first cloud-native CDN solution, NEA-CDN v5 – based on the Kubernetes infrastructure – provides operators with a centrally orchestrated, hardware-agnostic, and elastic private CDN. It makes it easy to deploy – in just one click – and comes with a centralised management and analytics platform that makes it easy to operate.

“Traffic fluctuations are huge in OTT video streaming,” comments Anevia NEA-CDN Product Manager David Tencer, “and operators will most of the time only use 6% of their available CDN capacity – meaning that 94% of the capacity is usually being wasted. With this elastic CDN solution, OTT operators can ensure a high-quality experience even during peak traffic, without having to build in over-capacity.”

PlayBox Neo announces a key addition to its executive team with the appointment of Shobit Chauhan as Head of Pre-Sales and Post-Sales Support for India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

"A broadcast industry professional with 20 years of experience, Shobit Chauhan graduated with a BA degree from the University of Delhi before joining our New Delhi office in 2000," comments PlayBox Neo CEO Pavlin Rahnev. "There he rose through the ranks to become CTO before moving on to gain experience in the wider computing world. He has an excellent understanding of the broadcast TV media business at its widest and of the technology we have pioneered over the past 20 years. We are delighted to have him back to supervise the support resources we offer our many customers and sales partners across Bangladesh, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent."

"I am very pleased to be returning to the PlayBox mainstream," Shobit Chauhan adds. "PlayBox Neo has sustained the talent for product development which drove the company right from its inception. Our server-based Channel-in-a-Box platform continues to be a market leader with over 18,500 playout and channel-branding systems installed around the world. Creative Works London delivers immersive and spectacular visuals to Guns N Roses North American Tour using disguise and Unreal Posted: 05/03/2020
Creative Works London delivers immersive and spectacular visuals to Guns N and rsquo; Roses North American Tour using disguise and Unreal

When Guns N’ Roses’ successful ‘Not In This Lifetime’ tour switched to disguise for its North American leg, it opened up new creative possibilities to enhance the already visually spectacular rock show.

The tour wrapped last November with two shows at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. The three-year world tour played 158 concerts selling more than 5 million tickets and grossing $584 million. The ‘Not In This Lifetime’ tour that started in 2016 marked the first time that Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan played together since 1993. Screenworks-NEP Live Events was the disguise rental partner for the tour.

Jeremy Leeor, Managing Director and Dan Potter, Creative Director, at disguise studio Creative Works London, coordinated the creation, execution and delivery of the Ghostrain and traditional show walk-in opening sequence using the new disguise and Unreal integration, currently going through Beta testing.

"A lot of what we created for the Guns’ tour visuals was built similarly to the way triple-A game assets are made using highly creative and flexible 3D tools like Cinema 4D, ZBrush, 3Ds Max and Substance Painter to create high-quality assets that can then be moved into real-time render engines like Unreal Engine,” explains Dan. “This is how we’ve always done it, and it makes a lot of our content stand out for its depth, texture and richness."

He points out that, “the rendering process on any project, in a conventional sense, presents many render engine and creative compositing options, and is central to how we achieve the diverse range of visual styles in our work. With the introduction of real-time render engines, you’re shifting the focal points of stages when you are developing a look to different points in the project timeline. This can be quite liberating if you’re working on something that plays to the strengths of the look you want to achieve and using the right tools to do it."

PPTV Invests in AirBox Neo-19 CIAB from PlayBox Neo Posted: 18/02/2020
PPTV Invests in AirBox Neo-19 CIAB from PlayBox Neo

PlayBox Neo announces the completion of a new AirBox Channel-in-a-Box playout system for Plovdiv Orthodox TV (PPTV), commissioned by the Metropolis of Plovdiv. It includes a server running Neo-19 ingest, transcoding, titling, scheduling and transmission modules. The new installation augments and upgrades existing AirBox CIAB infrastructure commissioned when PPTV commenced broadcasting 10 years ago.

"This investment provides us with latest-generation software running on new dedicated hardware," says PPTV Technical Director Yuriy Todorov. "It includes many refinements which make our day to day channel management operations more efficient than ever. Particularly appreciated is the low-glare graphic user interface which our presentation colleagues find eye-friendly throughout the duration of a working shift."

"Also appreciated is Neo-19's very logical display structure which provides the information essential to each phase of the content sourcing, finessing and scheduling process without peripheral distractions. Supplementary information, if or when needed, is easily accessible from the main GUI.

"A great strength of Neo-19 is that it alerts the operator if any aspect of a prescheduled playout process still needs attention. The PlayBox Neo system also gives our staff the option of working with full automation while retaining the ability to insert live content whenever required."

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Accurate Ad Tracking with OTT
Tim Armstrong As viewers embrace and transition to OTT, the opportunities and flexibility provided to advertisers are growing fast. However, like all technology shifts, this transition hasn’t come without challenges. Some technology used to monetise video over the years has resulted in a less-than-ideal viewing experience, with disruptive transitions and buffering two of the main issues. The good news is that advances in ad insertion technology mean content providers can now deliver a seamless OTT viewing experience, as well as addressable advertising options. This paves the way for the delivery of high-quality ad viewing while growing the advertiser's ROI.
