Blackmagic Design SmartView Duo

Blackmagic Design SmartView Duo

  • Greater SDI Compatibility
SmartView Duo is designed to be used for broadcast as well as post production so it includes support for more SDI video standards, including SD, HD and 3 Gb/s SDI formats. SmartView Duo allows firmware updating so it’s easy to upgrade to new SDI video formats when they are invented, and updates are free from the Blackmagic Design web site. SmartView Duo includes new advanced video standards used in post production including 1080 progressive HD rates and even 2K SDI over 3 Gb/s SDI video. All video formats can be connected and changed, because SmartView Duo simply switches in less than a second to the new format.
  • Smart Ethernet Control
There’s nothing more complicated than trying to match all your monitors by climbing all over your equipment and using little screwdrivers. Simply connect your SmartView Duo to your Ethernet network and use the included Mac and Windows software to adjust all your monitors from one central location. The Monitor Utility software uses Bonjour to automatically find all the SmartView Duo monitors on your network. You can save monitor settings from one monitor and copy to another, and when you’re working with lots of monitors, SmartView Duo even includes an identify mode to help you find the monitor you’re adjusting. SmartView Duo won’t suffer from drift because all adjustments are fully digital.
  • International Power Supply
If you’re traveling all over the world, SmartView Duo is perfect because it includes a standard 12 volt power supply with socket adapters for each country. Ideal for live location use where you don’t have engineering support, a standard 12 volt power socket means you can get spare power supplies from any electrical store. To eliminate accidental unplugging of power cords during live production or at other crucial times, SmartView Duo includes a cable tie down point so everything is perfectly secure!
  • Integrated Tally
SmartView Duo includes full tally features so it’s the perfect companion for live broadcasters. Unlike a simple tally light, SmartView Duo includes tally borders that can be independently displayed in red, green or blue. Each screen features an independent tally in the three colors so you can signal to the user more than a simple on air status. Tally is connected via a standard parallel pin connector on the rear of SmartView Duo so you get full compatibility with any switcher or automation system.

ATG Danmon Completes Westminster Links Upgrade

ATG Danmon announces the completion of upgrades to OB link facilities in the City of Westminster, central London, for one of Europe's leading television news providers. The project centred on new interface portals at Abingdon Green adjacent to the UK Houses of Parliament, and in Downing Street. Abingdon Green is often used by TV and radio reporters as a location for interviews with politicians and political commentators. The Downing Street portal is frequently used by reporters and mobile production crews covering activity outside the residences of the UK prime minister and the chancellor of the exchequer.

"Our role was to modernise the cabling, fibre and connectivity at each portal," says ATG Danmon managing director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "These are used for many Westminster-related broadcasts, both live and recorded, in addition to similar facilities at various other key London locations. They also form part of the wide range of facilities offered to other broadcast and corporate clients."

"Both portals are equipped to handle 1920 x 1080p50 Full-HD HD-SDI and IP. They also include high quality multi-channel analogue audio in/outs, genlock reference, IP data, a video return feed, audio talkback and electrical power. Everything is housed in highly robust and fully weatherproof steel cases which are kept locked until actually needed."

"The project is the latest of several commissions we have completed for this client. We were chosen both for our proven experience and because we already had accreditation to work within the Palace of Westminster."

Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London Posted: 17/03/2020
Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London

A PMC 7.1 surround sound system is being installed in The Design Museum, London, to support a new exhibition that focuses on legendary electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and their 50 year impact on the club scene.

Entitled Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers, the exhibition runs from April 1st to July 26th 2020. It will evoke the experience of being in a club by transporting visitors through the people, art, design, technology and photography that captured and shaped the electronic music landscape.

A surround sound system based on PMC’s award-winning result6 compact nearfield monitors will be an integral part of the exhibition, which will feature a 3D show capturing Kraftwerk’s music and stage performances. As long term PMC users, the band were adamant that only PMC speakers should be used for this system.

Commonly referred to as the ‘Godfathers of electronic music’, Kraftwerk pioneered the genre in the 1970s and had an enormous influence on other bands, including The Chemical Brothers. Alongside the Kraftwerk 3D show, the Design Museum’s exhibition will allow visitors to step into the visual world of The Chemical Brothers for one of their legendary live shows, as visuals and lights interact to create a new three-dimensional experience by Smith & Lyall, featuring Grammy Award-winning track Got to Keep On.

White Mark Ltd Revamps Middlesex Universitys Studio A Posted: 05/03/2020
White Mark Ltd Revamps Middlesex Universitys Studio A

The imminent launch of a new BA Degree course in Music Production has inspired Middlesex University London to revamp one of its music recording studios so that it can offer students the very best facilities for their course.

The University, which is based in Hendon, already has two stereo production suites that are DANTE linked to a recording booth, a 5.1 Avid mixing suite and a 24 track recording studio (Studio B), which has its own live room. The University’s existing Studio A, however, had many sound spill issues that needed resolving and it was decided that the best approach was to build a new acoustic space from the ground up.

David Clements, Technical Tutor, enlisted the help of studio design consultancy White Mark Ltd to transform Studio A into an acoustically accurate control room, live room and booth. The facility can now handle stereo and surround sound projects, thanks to the inclusion of a monitoring system that gives students the opportunity to mix in 5.1 and 7.1 formats.

White Mark Ltd was chosen for the project on the basis of its previous track record. “Once we discussed the project with David Bell [White Mark’s Managing Director] and his team, they drew up a design that we really liked,” says Technical Tutor David Clements. “We were looking at a few configurations of the space and White Mark’s plan to make the live areas one large room divided by a folding door into two booths just seemed to make the best use of the space.”

Top Sound Designer Matt McCamley Insists on PMC Monitoring For His Studio Posted: 17/02/2020
Top Sound Designer Matt McCamley Insists on PMC Monitoring For His Studio

Sound Designer Matt McCamley has installed a 5.1 surround sound system based on PMC result6 compact nearfield monitors at Focus Audio, his studio in Brisbane, Australia.

“They definitely sound like PMC's, and not a PMC 'Light' series, that’s for sure,” he says. “A lot of manufacturers claim their monitors are being honest and translate to the real world, but there aren't too many around that can back-up that claim. PMC can.”

McCamley specialises in Sound Design for the computer games industry, working for both AAA and Independent publishers. After 10 years in the UK where he was an in-house Senior Sound Designer at Rocksteady Studios (London), Ninja Theory (Cambridge) and Creative Assembly (Horsham), McCamley returned to Australia and set up Focus Audio, a games audio outsourcing company. Recent projects include sound design for Total War: 3 Kingdoms and the upcoming Troy. He has also worked on franchises such as Devil May Cry, Alien and Batman, as well as multiple Total Wars and new IP's.

Germanys Quatsch Comedy Club Edited with DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard Posted: 07/02/2020
Germanys Quatsch Comedy Club Edited with DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard

Blackmagic Design today announced that the latest series of Germany’s legendary stand up show, Quatsch Comedy Club, has been edited and graded on DaVinci Resolve Studio.

The Sky Deutschland show is filmed in front of a live comedy club audience with three live acts and one host taking to the Quatsch Comedy Club Theatre inside Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin. Post production supervisor, Marius Fischer, has graded the show with DaVinci Resolve since 2015 and this year opted to expand its use on the series to encompass the edit as well.

Marius explains that all of the shows, including the revue style, as well as standalone solo episodes, are filmed, then all of the rushes are passed through to post, which normally takes around 60 days to deliver an entire season. “I was keen to put the editing side of Resolve through its paces on a major project, as I could see that there were efficiencies to be gained in our series workflow.”

A minimum of seven cameras capture every comedy set, meaning Marius has to manage a huge amount of footage for each of the shows. “I’ve found features such as Sync Bin essential, as it allows smooth playback, but without the massive file size of a multicam clip. Once all of that heavy lifting is taken away from your process, you have so much more time to focus on the actual editing and making the very best production that will keep audiences entertained.”

Marius has also cut this season working with the DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard, which he believes has added yet another layer of efficiency to his post workflow. “You can work freely with both hands and there’s very little need to use a mouse. I wanted to measure the time savings, so I carried out a little experiment. I tried to make nine cuts within a one minute long multicam clip from the series. Working with the keyboard took two minutes less.”

“I love how simple and reliable the whole approach is. Productions rarely follow a linear delivery path once in post and the ability to do everything in one application makes so much more sense,” he reveals. “The idea of jumping in and out of pages to make small changes when needed is far more intuitive and saves a huge amount of time. You can continue to finesse and refine the edit at any stage during post production, without ever needing to render out a new timeline.”

“Quatsch Comedy Club is such an institution in Germany. In fact, I grew up watching it with my family. It can feel quite surreal that I’m not only working on it, but that I’ve also been able to bring the very latest developments in post production, thanks to DaVinci Resolve, to keep the show fresh and funny for the next generation watching at home.”

Sundance Nominee This is Not a Burial, Its a Resurrection Edited in DaVinci Resolve Posted: 07/02/2020
Sundance Nominee This is Not a Burial, Its a Resurrection Edited in DaVinci Resolve

Blackmagic Design today announced that DaVinci Resolve Studio was used to edit, grade and finish Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese's fiction feature debut, “This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection.”

The film, which has its international premiere at Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic competition. Global sales rights have now been picked up by Memento Film's cinema arthouse label, Artscope.

"This project was very personal to me, as it drew on real events from my grandmother’s life in southern Africa for inspiration," explains Lemohang, who directed, edited and delivered the feature in just six months.

Normally based in Berlin, he traveled to his birth country of Lesotho to complete production, before finalizing the edit at Uhuru Productions in Cape Town. The grade was then delivered by colorist Nic Apostoli, at nearby Comfort and Fame Studios.

“Using Lesotho as a location was wonderful, but it did bring its own set of challenges. Largely made up of locals, most of the cast had never been in front of a camera, and there was no electricity or other infrastructure to speak of," said Lemohang.

To get around this, Lemohang and his assistant acquired a generator for power and set up a temporary edit suite on location using quad core Mac Pros. It was here that they transcoded all of the rushes, and assembled a rough cut.

“With no electricity or working infrastructure to speak of, we really put DaVinci Resolve through its paces. It's testament to the software's overall stability that we didn't experience any performance related issues while on set. I also like how modern and fresh the UI is; it actually makes the process of editing fun.

"Going into post production, I had so many ideas, and Resolve made the job of pulling together the cut, so much simpler. I was then able to shape the story once back in Cape Town, using the NLE and retiming tools in Resolve to finesse the story’s narrative, building in tension subtly.

"A few years ago, I'd actually stopped editing altogether," Lemohang concludes. "My previous NLE had become too difficult to use, and very prone to crashing. When I tried DaVinci Resolve for the first time, I rediscovered my passion and enthusiasm for editing. It's a whole other world! Being able to complete post production using a single piece of software makes so much more sense to me creatively. I haven't looked back since."

Italian Creative Agency Uses Ultimatte 12 for Building Virtual Reality Studio Sets

Blackmagic Design today announced that ViSo Video Solutions has upgraded its virtual reality studios, relying on Ultimatte 12 compositing processors and URSA Broadcast cameras, to produce national television commercials and shows, for clients such as Sky Italia, Mediaset, ESL and Netco Sports.

Founded in 2010, the company not only offers clients its VR services, it also creates all computer generated (CG) and 3D assets needed in house, and provides all post production which includes editing and grading in DaVinci Resolve Studio.

“Augmented and virtual studio environments bring so many benefits to productions,” begins Luigi Nino, general manager at ViSo. “We chose to develop our VR system in house so that we could control every aspect, and customize materials, lighting, animations and effects for each clients’ specific needs.”

The studio’s VR set is 130 square meters and uses three tripod mounted URSA Broadcasts as well as a dolly mounted 4.5m jib on a six meter track. An ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K, with ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel, is used for live vision mixing.

No Static AV Delivers Ultra HD Workflow for Annual Baby2baby Fundraising Gala Posted: 07/02/2020
No Static AV Delivers Ultra HD Workflow for Annual Baby2baby Fundraising Gala

Blackmagic Design today announced that LA based event production company No Static AV (NSAV) used an Ultra HD live production workflow featuring URSA Broadcast cameras and ATEM switchers to deliver in house AV and IMAG for the annual Baby2Baby fundraising gala, which raises millions of dollars for the nonprofit and the children living in poverty that it serves.

Held at the 3Labs event space in Culver City, CA, the Baby2Baby gala brings together celebrities, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and the evening hosts the top chefs in Los Angeles, an exclusive auction and inspiring program, all while honoring this year’s Giving Tree Award winner, Chrissy Teigen. Past honorees include Amy Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Alba.

With no shortage of AV deliverables, NSAV used its mobile production unit featuring a custom made flypack designed specifically with the Baby2Baby gala in mind. The unit relied on several Blackmagic Design products, including four URSA Broadcasts complete with URSA Studio Viewfinders, four Camera Fiber Converters and four Studio Fiber Converters for fiber connectivity between the cameras and switcher, an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel for live switching, and a Smart Videohub 20x20 router to distribute content throughout the venue. NSAV also used an ATEM Camera Control Panel for remote camera control and Teranex AV standards converter for on the fly conversions.

NSAV praised the image quality from the URSA Broadcasts and the ease of use of the live production gear. The URSA Broadcasts were used for IMAG and the content was also recorded in camera in 4K and in 1080 at the mobile production unit. Camera Fiber Converters and Studio Fiber Converters were necessary for fiber communication between the cameras and the switcher, giving the team real time control of all camera aspects, and the ATEM Camera Control Panel allowed NSAV to properly adjust color correction, shading and shutter speed during rehearsals and the live show.

Audio Design Desk Debuts Transformative Sound Design App with Sonic Intelligence for Real-time Audio to Video Sound Editing

Audio Design Desk, an entirely new breed of Digital Audio Workstation that uses AI-assisted content creation tools to enable filmmakers, editors, sound designers and creators to produce cinema-quality sound in seconds, has made its official debut in the media and entertainment market. The brand new audio creation tool is already earning industry accolades, being named on the shortlist of the 2020 SXSW Innovation Awards in the Music & Audio category.

An audio design app that comes with more than 20,000 sounds, add.app completely transforms the process of adding music and sound effects to picture, cutting down what can typically be a full day project to just a few minutes. Using patent-pending Sonic Intelligence™, every sound in the add.app library is assigned identifying characteristics and carries an embedded sync point, which means that as sounds are previewed and chosen, they automatically land on the timeline in the exact right position relative to the video

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

More than just software - SaaS is a relationship
Jon Finegold As cloud technology becomes mainstream in media, the highly customized applications deployed by early adopters are increasingly being retired in favor of off-the-shelf, multi-tenant SaaS (Software as a Service) solutions. Well-designed SaaS offers economic advantages in terms of much faster onboarding times, orders of magnitude lower TCO and the ability to stay up-to-date more easily in today’s rapidly changing environment. SaaS solutions are updated regularly based on customer feedback and usage data so, as new trends emerge, vendors can respond quickly to the benefit of their customers.

A Focus on the Feels
Simon Jones

Founded in London in the early 70s, Densitron was – as many companies are in the beginning - a small, specialist provider of an emerging range of thoughtfully assembled display technology products.

But that was 45 years ago. Although still London-based, it is no longer accurate to refer to Densitron as ‘small’. Consistent growth through the decades - coupled with recently becoming part of Quixant, the global gaming and broadcast technology group - has seen Densitron expand as part of a much larger, publicly traded company with offices in Europe, Asia, and America comprised of more than 200 employees generating annual turnover in excess of $100m.
