Cobalt Digital at IBC2017 Posted: 13/07/2017
Making its debut at IBC2017 is a new Cobalt system that combines frame-accurate SCTE 104 trigger (FAST) insertion with enhanced HLS SCTE 35 streaming on a single platform. Built for the openGear(R) terminal gear platform, the FAST-Stream system is a comprehensive solution for providing baseband SDI signals and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) streams with frame-accurate boundary points, complete with the SCTE 35 metadata contained in the associated manifest file. Applications range from URL address insertion for targeted ad replacement to embedded DRM for distributing protected content. The FAST-STREAM OTT system interfaces with automation and uses timestamps to insert metadata frame-accurately into baseband SDI before encoding the stream in high-quality H.264 for meeting sophisticated digital program insertion (DPI) delivery requirements in real time.

Sonnet Technologies at SMPTE17 Posted: 11/07/2017
Intraware will showcase new Thunderbolt(TM) 3 editions of Sonnet's Echo(TM) Express SEL and Echo Express SE I Thunderbolt-to-PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) expansion systems, which are both now shipping. The compact and lightweight SEL and SE I chassis harness Thunderbolt 3 to enable data transfers up to 2,750 MB/s for both Mac(R) and Windows(R) computers, supporting a wide variety of high-performance PCIe cards. Differing only in size, the single-slot SEL and SE I systems are ideal for use in situations in which users only need to connect a single PCIe card. With the new interface, both systems enable users of computers equipped with 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, such as the new MacBook Pro(R) and iMac(R), to take advantage of Thunderbolt 3's 2,750 MB/s of PCI Express bandwidth to support the most demanding, highest-performance adapter cards.

Bluebell Opticom at the 2017 NAB Show Posted: 23/02/2017

NEW -- Edgware

At the 2017 NAB Show, Bluebell Opticom will highlight Edgware, its new range of IP- gateway products that serve as a bridge between current 3G-SDI-based broadcast infrastructures and those built on IP technology. Edgware products make it possible to use BNC and XLR technology to transport broadcast signals over IP networks. The user interface remains the same, but the transport technology is new. The result is that broadcast facilities can save money by repurposing existing equipment for IP delivery.

Welcome to the world of filming The Island with Bear Grylls
Paul Scurrell How do you make a polished television show worthy of broadcast on Channel 4 when the camera operators are starving, dehydrated and sleep deprived? Most of them also have no previous experience of professional filming and are more concerned with finding their next meal than making sure they've got their cameras switched on ready to record. Welcome to the world of filming The Island with Bear Grylls.

Swimrun World Championships - LiveU report
Kim Svensson - new Through the open waters and across the islands of the Swedish wilderness, battling the elements in the OTILLO Swimrun World Championship isn't for the faint-hearted. The total distance is 75 kilometres, of which 10 km are open-water swimming and 65 km are trail-running, presenting a huge physical - and doubtless mental - challenge. Taking place in early September, competitors battle along remote islands that form the archipelago to the south east of Stockholm.

Consumer of the shelf technology is coming
Bruce Devlin I had the privilege last week of sitting in a strategy session of the Digital Production Partnership where we were concerned with predicting the future. As Niels Bohr once famously said, "Predictions are really hard - especially when predicting the future". One of the attendees made a comment about camera technology and I instantly thought about the latest greatest and most expensive High Dynamic Range, Wide Colour Gamut, Low Noise, High Sensitivity wonder-device that are being talked about at the technological bleeding edge of the industry.

What are the challenges of AoIP
Craig Newbury At the setup of a recent Outside Broadcast (OB), I was privy to an attempt to pass a signal across two independent Audio over IP (AoIP) enabled trucks. In an SDI world, this bridge would have been as simple as coupling two BNC cables together, but here the engineers quipped about the additional and sometimes challenging processes of connecting one truck's IP router to the other's. What range, what subnet, what protocol? And so, I was introduced first-hand to some of the practicalities of transitioning from SDI to AoIP within a live production environment.

Assets in the air
Paul Wilkins People everywhere are talking about "the cloud", as if it is somehow something (1) new and (2) intrinsically exciting. It really is neither of those things. In the IT world, software as a service (SaaS) has been around since the 1960's when organisations bought the use of mainframe software on a time-sharing basis.
