ES Broadcast adds Ross Ultrix to hire fleet to meet customer infrastructure challenges Posted: 23/09/2021
ES Broadcast adds Ross Ultrix to hire fleet to meet customer infrastructure challenges

ES Broadcast has added a Ross Ultrix router to its extensive dry hire catalogue in response to growing demand for rented routing and infrastructure solutions from customers.

A Ross Diamond Elite Partner, ES Broadcast was the first Ross partner to specify and order the Ultrix FR5 routing/AV processing platform when it was launched in 2018. Over the last three years ES Broadcast has been a strong advocate of the Ultrix platform, specifying it in a wide range of systems integration projects.

“We’re very proud of the projects we’ve completed that feature the Ultrix,” said Jonathan Lyth, Group CTO of ES Broadcast. “It really has been one of our top performing solutions for our systems clients because of the flexibility it offers and the breadth of its feature set.

"We’ve used it to solve a wide variety of customer challenges, and our decision to add Ultrix to our existing dry hire portfolio has also been based on customer challenges, albeit new ones caused by the pandemic.”

Adding Ross Ultrix to rental fleet provides sound commercial and technical solution

With customers forging ahead with their plans for 2022, the team at ES Broadcast has been receiving an increasing number of requests for dry hire solutions, with uncertainties around capital expenditure budgets the major driver.

Lyth explained: “We’ve had quite a few customers coming to us with a need for additional resource but without the signed-off CapEx budget to support it. As our dry hire offering has grown, adding the Ultrix makes perfect sense because it can provide video and audio routing, clean/quiet switching, multiviewers, frame synchronizers and UHD gearboxing all from one chassis.”

Precise customisation for customer needs

“The software-defined nature of Ultrix means we can easily configure it for specific customer workflows via the different software licences Ross offers,” continued Lyth. “Our systems team knows the Ross Ultrix very well and so we can offer very high degrees of customisation along with custom-designed dashboard control panels that will perfectly meet the customer’s requirements. In this sense, we’re bridging the gap between systems integration and traditional dry hire and using our expertise to deliver a solution that’s extremely tailored.”

With customers in the live events and broadcast markets already signed up to Ultrix hires, and the rental diary beginning to fill up,  Lyth is pleased that the investment is already bearing fruit. “With the Ross Ultrix, we can rent one single product that can sit at different points in the production chain and in different production environments, and that’s a powerful proposition. Customers really appreciate that flexibility as well as the 12G UHD capabilities of Ultrix.

"I can really see us expanding this side of our business and offering more specialist infrastructure rentals in future. We succeed by adapting what we offer to the needs of our customers, and I think there’s exciting potential growth in this area.”

Using Modern Technology at Envy Provides a View into the Future of Post Production
Michael Darer ENVY’s use of modern technology, including remote edit capabilities and their expansive use of Signiant Media Shuttle, enables them to collaborate with customers and partners around the world, and made the transition to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic any easy one. Although project files and media are stored securely on-premises at ENVY’s facilities in London, they are able to collaborate globally thanks to their forward-thinking approach to post production.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

The Networking Revolution
Neil Vann We all seek greater flexibility in everything we do. Whether it is another app for your phone, checking for a faster route on your sat-nav, or a changeable hotel booking, the more options we have, the better! Flexibility is fantastic. It offers us choices that we may never want or need, but at least we know that they are there on the off-chance that we do.

Testing Hybrid Workflows
Martin Mulligan With the industry’s steady migration from traditional HD-SDI to IP and/or 12G-SDI infrastructures, broadcasters are now faced with the significant challenge of having to manage and monitor a wide array of new signal types in order to provide properly managed workflows. The switch away from HD-SDI is not happening overnight and, indeed, is happening at different speeds in different parts of the world. Due to this rapidly evolving technology landscape, reliable and versatile test and measurement (T&M) solutions have never been more important.

Keeping Pace with the Content Revolution
Kevin Fitzgerald These are uniquely challenging times for broadcasters and their technical teams. Not only are they having to negotiate the move to IP-based infrastructures and the introduction of new formats and techniques such as 4K and HDR, they are also having to generate more content than ever before to support OTT and web services as well as traditional linear broadcast.

Original KVM or KVM over IP
Jochen Bauer Will the technology used in broadcasting solely consist of IP devices? For years, IP has been entering all areas of life. Especially control room applications as they are typically deployed in broadcasting benefit from the IP revolution in many ways. But an “IP-only broadcast world” is not yet here. Nevertheless, the trend clearly moves towards IP transmission, even though a large part of content production still uses traditional transmission paths. And therefore we continue to live in a hybrid world, using both original and IP-based technology. KVM experts Guntermann und Drunck still rely on both original KVM and KVM-over-IP™ to be able to offer their customers the best of both worlds.

Keeping the Show on the Road
Andy McKenzie There is long-established saying in the media business that, if something goes wrong, at least nobody dies. It is almost true unless you happen to be a TV producer suffering a cardiac arrest because your primary video feed has gone blank during a high-budget programme.

How Broadcasts Can Simplify The Delivery Of Live Video Streams To Affiliates
Phillipe Gonon In today’s fast paced environment broadcasters need to quickly, easily, and simultaneously share high-quality live content with multiple affiliates or other broadcast facilities. However, today it’s typical for each third-party transmitter to be connected to its own receiver with its own platform and management system. This results in major TV channels having several web interfaces and/or screens to receive and distribute feeds coming in from third-party devices.
