Sync Generator

Tektronix SPG422

The SPG422 is a component digital, sync pulse generator (SPG)

The SPG422 provides basic setup and timing signals for component digital tape recorders and processing equipment systems. It provides audio tones and a few simple video test signals needed to adjust equipment and stripe video tapes.

Analog black signals are the timing reference signals of choice and the SPG 422 provides up to six analog black signals, each with separate timing controls. Because the SPG 422 has good frequency stability, it can perform as a stand-alone generator or genlock to an external PAL or NTSC signal.

Embrionix Adds Frame Synchronizer to Miniaturized Software-Defined SMPTE ST2110 SDI-IP Gateways Posted: 26/06/2018
Embrionix Adds Frame Synchronizer to Miniaturized Software-Defined SMPTE ST2110 SDI-IP Gateways
Embrionix today announced that its SDI-IP (SMPTE ST2110) miniaturized emSFP and emFusion gateways now offer frame synchronization technology on encapsulation. The option allows broadcasters to eliminate the costs and time involved in frame syncing signals before the IP gateway and ensures free-run SDI signals are aligned with the IP system’s PTP Grandmaster. The frame sync will also address timing alignment challenges with non-Epoch-aware equipment while ensuring the alignment of non-genlocked SDI cameras and remote feeds.

Mike Griggs From the UK’s National Trust to magazine publishers to manufacturers, digital content creator Mike Griggs has a wide and varied portfolio of clients for whom he creates 3D art, motion graphics and multimedia exhibits. A typical day might involve sampling birdsong near Virginia Woolf’s country estate or creating 3D animations for VR. An Obituary to Timecode
Bruce Devlin - new A stoic and persistent character that stubbornly refused to change with the times, Timecode has finally passed on, but no-one has noticed. A long-lasting industry veteran, Timecode was brought into this world at an uncertain date in the late 1960s due to the needs of analogue tape workflows and the demand for synchronisation between audio and video devices. A joint activity between SMPTE and the EBU led to the work on Time and Control codes starting its journey to standardisation in the early 1970s.

Fast-moving productions need multi-cam RF reliability
Darren Bilton Wireless acquisition creates a level of freedom not possible with any other form of filming yet only a decade ago the technique was barely possible. The technology enabling live real-time connections over radio frequencies has advanced leaps and bounds such that there is barely an entertainment, documentary, sports or news format today that doesn’t benefit from at least one link system. That means the demands on the kit continues to rise and includes the need for fail safe multi-camera operation, ease of use and backwards compatibility all within a small, lightweight and budget-friendly package.

The Pitfalls of Online File Sharing and Sending Services
Mike Nash Easy-to-use, readily-accessible, and consumer-oriented, online file sharing platforms such as Dropbox and Google Drive are, to end users, a pleasant replacement to older file transfer methods such as FTP. FTP is complex to use and requires IT intervention to make almost any change. The pain associated with FTP, which was developed in the 1970s, is one of the factors that opened the door for the rise of online file sharing services in the workplace.

Why is ST2110 important
Penny Westlake Presenting to a capacity audience at a joint meeting of the RTS Thames Valley Centre and SMPTE in Reading, research engineer and industry commentator Tony Orme opened the evening with the assertion - “SMPTE’s ST2110 is the most important development to hit broadcast television since John Logie Baird went head to head with EMI-Marconi at the 1936 BBC trials in Alexandra Palace, London”.

What is Serial Communication
Mike Colyer

Don’t get me wrong - the advent of IP technology has done wonders for the broadcasting universe, especially here in Special Cams land where changing a setting could have involved a rather long walk and climb to a remote camera location! Nevertheless, this said, I still feel that serial communication is a huge contender - not only just in the realm of odd robotics systems, but also across broadcast in general.

In this article, I will walk through the very basics - introducing a few different types of serial and how they work.

VR and the importance of tracking
KitPlus I would like to begin this article by clarifying what we at Shotoku mean when we talk about VR in live production. It’s not the production of immersive, 360 content where you need to wear a headset; we are talking about virtual studio (VS) and augmented reality (AR) work, such as placing graphics into a green screen environment or physical set. The technology used for this work is entirely different, though equally specialist – therefore it is important to understand the challenges of this kind of production in order to make informed kit choices.
