1-inch C-format portable broadcast video recorder

Ampex Nagra VPR-5

The VPR-5 is a 1-inch C-format portable broadcast video recorder. Developed as a joint-venture with the AMPEX corporation of America it was introduced in 1983 as the world’s smallest, lightest broadcast quality portable video reorder. Available in both PAL (for European) and NTSC (North American) television formats the VPR-5 allowed broadcast quality video to be shot on-location.

Nagra say thison their website:

The VPR-5 is powered from detachable NiCd intelligent battery packs, capable of communicating with the charger to optimize the charge times and to increase battery life.

A selection of interchangable camera interfaces allow the VPR-5 to operate with virtually any video camera of the time. Other interfaces, such as audio microphone and line level units as well as a colour stabilizer were built to ensure the highest quality recording and playback.

Using rotating-head technology the VPR-5 was a milestone in the technical research and development of the NAGRA brand in both tape transport mechanics and high frequency video electronic design.

Incorporating many state-of-the-art features, S.M.D. electronics and built using aviation technology to reduce weight the VPR-5 is the lightest broadcast recorder ever built.

This unit has the over size cover and back plate. This allows the user to use larger 1 hour reels than the spot reels.

Included is the battery charger and original cover / bag.

Item has been hardly used, was an investment to cover a particular job and was archived since.

Fifty Fifty Post Production selects Leader LV5600 for UHD HDR monitoring Posted: 02/08/2021
Fifty Fifty Post Production selects Leader LV5600 for UHD HDR monitoring

Fifty Fifty has invested in a Leader LV5600 broadcast-quality waveform monitor for use at its Soho headquarters. The newly installed instrument is being used as the master reference for quality control of television and digital film productions. It was supplied by Leader distribution partner Thameside.

Fifty Fifty’s operational managing director Alex Meade comments. "The LV5600 was a crucial addition to our equipment jigsaw. It provides all the tools we need to ensure conformance with the strict standards laid down by the major video-on-demand content providers. The operating menu is well structured and highly intuitive, as Kevin Salvidge of Leader demonstrated when he visited us to host a very effective training session.

"A major advantage of the LV5600 is that its CINELITE and CINEZONE tools allow real-time signal monitoring, supported by the ability to drill down for closer study when specific elements of the signal flow need detailed inspection."

HOLLYLAND LARK 150 Review
Phil Vinter

The exponential growth of video supercharged a technological revolution that began in the early noughties with the advent of DSLR cameras.
The cinematic-style shallow depth of field image video quality from DSLRs was a revelation, but, back then audio was the big drawback. As demand has grown so the technology has improved and today’s one-man-band small rig set ups can capture pretty good sound into a DSLR style camera.

Phil Vinter reviews the latest release from HOLLYLAND and it's a thumbs up from us.

ERA IaaS at University of Salford
KitPlus The University of Salford (UoS) is widely recognised in both academic and professional circles as a leading educational establishment in acoustics and media production. In 2011 the University moved its television and radio courses from its main campus just outside Salford city centre into the Orange Tower on the main piazza of MediaCityUK (MCUK).

This purpose-built hub for broadcasters, facility houses and production companies was created when redevelopment of the old Salford Quays docks area began in 2007. UoS was among the first institutions to consider moving to MCUK, along with the BBC, which had already committed to transfer many of its departments from London.
