Sony SONY DVCAM Recorder DSR 80P

The DSR-80/80P is a/-inch digital video cassette4recorder that uses the DVCAM digital recordingformat. This system achieves stable, superb picturequality by digitally processing video signals that areseparated into color difference signals and luminancesignals (component method). The DSR-80/80P unit is equipped with the variety offunctions that are needed for videocassette recordersand players used in professional digital video editingsystems. It supports the ClipLink™ functiondeveloped by Sony Corporation for highly efficientvideo editing. When connected to a SonyEditStation™, the unit serves as part of a powerfulnon-linear editing systemThe unit is also equipped with a full-fledged analoginterface to support hybrid systems that combineconventional analog equipment with digital equipment. The DSR-80/80P's main features are described below.DVCAM FormatDVCAM is based on the consumer DV format, whichuses the 4:1:1 component digital format, and providesa1/-inch digital recording format for professional use.4High picture quality, high stabilityVideo signals are separated into color differencesignals and luminance signals, which are encoded andcompressed to one-fifth size before being recorded toensure stable and superb picture quality.Because the recording is digital, multi-generationdubbing can be performed with virtually nodeterioration of quality Non-linear editingThis is an editing method that uses video and audiosignals that have been digitally encoded and recorded ona hard disk as digital data. When compared withconventional (linear) editing methods, non-linear editingoffers vastly improved efficiency in editing operations, such as by eliminating tape transport time.1).Wide track pitchThe recording track pitch is 15 µm, fully 50 percent wider than the DV format's 10-µm track pitch. Thanks to this feature, the DVCAM format sufficiently meets the reliability and precision requirements of professional editing. High-quality PCM digital audio PCM recording makes for a wide dynamic range and a high signal-to-noise ratio, thereby enhancing sound quality. There are two recording modes: 2-channel mode (48- kHz sampling and 16-bit quantization), which offers sound quality equivalent to the DAT (Digital Audio Tape) format, or 4-channel mode (32-kHz sampling and 12-bit quantization). Playback compatibility with DV format A DV cassette recorded on a DV-format VCR can be played back on this unit. (Cassettes recorded in LP mode cannot be played back.) Choice of two cassette sizes The unit can use both standard-size and mini-size DVCAM cassettes.

• According to cassette size, it automatically changes the position of the reel drive plate.

• The maximum recording/playback times are 184 minutes for standard size cassettes and 40 minutes for mini-size cassettes.

Digital interfacesThe unit provides the following two digital interfaces.

• SDTI (QSDI): This interface enables SDTI (QSDI)-format video, audio and time code signals to betransferred between this unit and the Sony EditStationat normal speed.

• AES/EBU interface : This interface enables AES/EBU-format digital audio signals to be input andoutput. As an option, you can also use the SDI (Serial DigitalInterface) as an interface for D1 (component) formatdigital video and audio signals.Analog interfacesThe unit also comes with analog interfaces enabling itto be connected to analog video and audio equipment.

• Analog video : These interfaces include a componentinterface (can be switched to RGB), compositeinterface, and S-video interface.• Analog audio : 4-channel input and 4-channel outputare both provided.Facilities for High-efficiencyEditingThe unit provides an abundance of functions thatenhance editing efficiency and precision.........................................................................................................................................................................................................1) QSDI is a type of SDTI.SDTI is the name of a standard interface established asSMPTE 305M.This unit uses SDTI to transmit DV data, and the input/output connectors are labeled "SDTI(QSDI)".6Chapter 1 OverviewSupports ClipLink functionIn response to commands sent from the EditStation, index pictures that are recorded on tape or ClipLinklog data that is recorded in the cassette memory can betransferred to the EditStation. The EditStationoperator can then efficiently use these pictures anddata in a preliminary editing session. For more information about the ClipLink function, refer tothe "ClipLink™ Guide" also supplied with this unit.Internal time code generator/readerThe unit contains a time code generator/reader whichcan generate and read longitudinal time code (LTC) inthe SMPTE format (DSR-80) or EBU format (DSR-80P), to ensure frame-accurate editing. When the unit is equipped with an optional DSBK- 130/130P Time Code Input/Output Board, it can output the time code read from tape as analog (LTC) signal, and receive externally generated time code (LTC). Remote control The unit can be operated by remote control from an editing controller that supports the RS-422A interface or from on optional SIRCS such as the DSRM-10 or SVRM-100A. High-speed search function The unit has a picture search function that allows you to view color picture at playback speeds up to 32 times normal speed in forward and reverse directions. When remote-controlling this unit in shuttle mode from an editing controller or a remote controller, you can search at any speed in the range 0 (still) to 32 times normal in both directions. You can also search frame-by-frame in jog mode. At search speeds up to 5 times normal, you can also hear playback audio. In indicator and menu indications, however, the "SDTI(QSDI)" name is shortened to "QSDI". In the remainder of this manual, the short form ("QSDI") is used. 2) SIRCS (Sony Integrated Remote Control System) A command protocol to remote control Sony professional videocassette recorders/players.

TV Futures - The Shadowing Experience
Daniel Jones My name is Daniel Jones, and it is no accident that I’m currently studying BSc (Hons) Television and Broadcasting at the University of Portsmouth. Since completing GSCE media studies I have been constantly questioning what I watch with questions such as, “Wow, how was that filmed?” or “That looks amazing, I wonder how long that took?” It should come as no surprise that I made it a big focus of mine to get myself some real work experience to give myself some answers to these production questions.

Keeping Your Post Prodction on Track with Subclips and Search Bins
Alex Macleod

For my 2nd Kit Plus article I thought I’d try and build on the theme of my first, and that’s one of making sure things are organised at all levels of your post production projects.

Last time I talked about trying as best as you can to stick to the ‘two week rule’, making sure that the names & locations of every asset you import, and every bin & sequence that you create in your project - will make sense to you regardless of how long it is you spend away from it.

NAB Intelligence
Bruce Devlin - new It's that time of year again. 06:30 on road bikes on the Las Vegas Strip with a merry bunch of folks who believe they look good in lycra. As we pedal West up the hill towards Red Rock there will be stories of the year just gone and questions about what to look for at the show. I, for one, will be attending the Devoncroft event to check up on who is spending what and where. I will then look forward to the topics that might be buzzing around the halls. I predict there will be many displays of Machine Learning hiding under the banner of Artificial Intelligence. Some of these will show better picture quality, others will show personalisation engines, some will be improved search tools and yet more will be synthesising pictures and motions to replace reality with and Artificial reality that's more compelling for the viewer.

Looking for the Silver Lining
Harry Grinling According to the World Meteorological Organisation, there are 10 different types of cloud, each of which can be divided further into sub-types. They range from the cirrus, the thin floaty clouds which generally serve only to make the sky look beautiful to the towering, all-embracing cumulonimbus which can deliver fearful quantities of rain – the biggest cumulonimbus clouds can contain 50 million tonnes of water.

4k and HDR Wireless Camera Transmitters
David Edwards Across the globe, live events represented over 50 percent of the most watched TV programs last year. However, big budget episodic shows are impacting live TV and the way viewers want to see their content. Viewers are demanding the same quality of production for live event broadcasts as they see in pre-recorded TV series and films. Producers of live content are looking to new, immersive and cinematic mobile camera views to better achieve these results. This presents a challenge to live production teams as these new camera views and angles must match the quality of the rest of the production -  the demand for mobility means that the cameras need to be wireless.
