2011: 3D Make or break?
Bob Pank# Last year was predicted to be the year when 3D would leap forward or flop. History is littered with short periods of interest and development only for 3D to drop off the scene again. 3D Diaries has maintained that this time its different as now nearly all the right technologies are available the only missing link being a practical autostereoscopic screen.

The art of 3D
Bob Pank# Two recent events have expanded my understanding of 3D. BVE North turned out to be quite busy both around the exhibition and at the many free seminars. Of course I made a beeline for the 3D Revolution Theatre where there were sessions throughout the two days of the show.

Fast 3D
Bob Pank# It is easy to make the assumption that 3D should comply with existing standards, as in the 2D video streams of television or movie images running at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second, according to the relevant 2D standards.

3D a Geographic Thing
Bob Pank# It may just be coincidence but, in the last week, two stories about 3D in Scandinavia have landed on the 3D Diaries desk. Of course two swallows do not a summer make but maybe there is a trend here, with some nations embracing the third dimension more than others.

Game, Set and Match
Bob Pank# It was only three months ago that this column hailed featured the new DVB-3DTV standard. But already there’s talk of a second version, or rather ‘phase’, as described by David Wood of the EBU in the new 3D Roundabout newsletter. In a way this is healthy. It shows just how fast 3DTV is moving and, whereas phase 1 is designed to work with existing 2D STBs, phase 2 will be designed to run on a new specification of specialist 3D STBs.

The Space Race
Bob Pank# You would have thought that the Royal Wedding, with its forecast record global viewing, would be available in 3D. Reports in the Guardian newspaper say that Sky 3D was keen to provide a complete 3D service, and indeed they did have cameras to shoot the outside scenes but access inside the Abby was denied.

3D Post at NAB, Wimbledon, and more
Bob Pank# You may recall that last time 3D Diaries tackled the subject of post production in August 2010, it warned that the fix it in post habit was definitely to be avoided. This means shoot it correctly in the first place, as trying to fix errors, especially the 3D ones, in post can get very tricky and, may be expensive.

The 3D titling tango
Bob Pank# The further you look into 3D, the more it diverges from 2D. Titling, including lower thirds, on-screen burnt-in text and subtitles (aka closed captions) are common features of 2D TV and film presentations and so its not unreasonable to expect it to be used in 3D.

Seeing 3D or 2D
Bob Pank# The press coverage of all angles of 3D continues unabated but the subjects are changing away from the technology and more towards the commercial aspects and how 3D should be shot.

Deja Vu
Bob Pank# In the cinema world, 3D has already proved to be a good moneymaker, but now a good number of people in the industry are seriously focussing on 3DTV.

3D to see at IBC 2010
Bob Pank# IBC2010 marks the fourth year when the new wave of Stereoscopic 3D took hold at the show. Thats three years of time for development and implementation. While cinema is racing ahead, taking a good extra percentage of people at the door who pay a 3D premium price television in Europe is only just beginning. Sky is the pioneer for the UK, going on air in October soon after the show. This will, surely be a defining moment when 3D comes to TV not just for a special event but to stay.

3D diaries -Fix it in post. Dont go there
Bob Pank# The more I look into it the more scary 3D is. Researching for 3D Diaries shows there are so many pitfalls and traps that would be all too easy to fall into; enough to put people off the whole idea! The answer is simply to learn about the subject before seriously jumping in with both feet. Clearly it adds a whole new layer to all parts of the scene-to-screen chain. In each link there are traps to avoid, and avoid them you must, because getting it wrong produces unwatchable results.

3D Diaries Part 2 Cameras and rigs
Bob Pank# The idea of S-3D is not hard to grasp: one image for each eyeball. But making it work well enough to maintain the 3D illusion for the viewer is far from simple or straightforward. The fun starts with acquisition that breaks into two types of operation; live (no post production) and not live (with post).

3D Diaries Part 1
Bob Pank# Welcome to 3D Diaries, TV-Bays own monthly column dedicated to 3D. Each month will feature an aspect of the 3D chain from scene to screen all areas are affected in some way or another, so theres plenty to talk about! But this would be meaningless if you are not a 3D believer, so this month Ive shown why 3D is now here to stay.

Why do poorly composed 3D stereoscopic images give headache and eye-strain problems
N/A The brain is used to being able to fuse the two separate views of the world seen from each eye into a 3D perceived scene. However we have a closed-loop system and the eye muscles constantly pull convergence and focus depending on the region of interest.
