The long term NAB veterans will be well aware of just how quickly new technologies can come and go in the television industry. For instance, only a couple of years ago, 3D was still the hot topic, now it has gone quiet, but not altogether gone away. So it is good to report that 4K had another very good NAB, probably its best yet as it is still gaining wider industry support.
The headlines have been full of new cameras but there has to be infrastructure, post production and suitable delivery systems, as well as, crucially, enough screens and viewers, to make economic sense of the format. So it was significant that a specialist in a different area, namely signal measurement technology, should take a serious interest. Noboru Kitagawa, President of Leader Electronics described his companys LV5490 picture and signal monitor that allows ensu ring precise focus - absolutely essential in 4K!

At the technical sessions 4K was also a hot topic. New technology is one thing but, in our industry, it is typically a big sporting event that galvanizes broadcasters to actually use it. Looking beyond the FIFA World Cup, the 2016 Olympics is an obvious target for the format. Interestingly 8K was on show at London 2012, but only on a very small scale, with the main broadcasts being produced in HD 1080/50. 4K should be ubiquitous at the 2016 event as, according to Thierry Fautier of Harmonic, This year should be a transition period for UHD, preparing for video infrastructure deployments in 2015 in order to be ready for the 2016 Olympics. DVB Executive Director Peter Sieberts paper, co-authored by BBC R&D, Panasonic and Teracam, looked at two possible routes to suitably modify DVB-T2 for 4K terrestrial transmissions. There were also a number of papers looking at using IP in post production and delivery. For the latter, it seems to me theres huge work to be done to speed up the internet, specifically my internet (4Mbits/s at the moment) to get a reliable 4K service to all viewers.
There is an increasing choice of products at either end of the 4K workflow. For the consumer, TV set prices have tumbled and surely will reduce further... which brings us back to the ever-popular subject of cameras. Here the choice, and competition, was considerably expanded with several new arrivals at the show. Perhaps the biggest surprise was AJAs entry into this market. But when you think about it, the role of the camera has massively changed in recent years with a serious focus on workflow, which AJA has its feet firmly in, as well as creating great images. So maybe thats part of the reason AJA has expanded into the camera market. The Cion was introduced by AJAs Product Marketing Manager Bryce Button as the companys new baby, as a camera that actually looks like a camera has a PL mount and puts together the technology that AJA has been developing for years. So this is a lot more than just a camera. As a shoulder mount camera it is said to be OK to use all day, and shoot in 4K, 2K or HD... not by cropping the images to produce the smaller formats but by oversampling, using all the 4K pixels and applying AJAs estimable processing power to produce clear images in the smaller formats. Frame rate go up to 120 f/s. It offers AJA RAW and a ProRes workflow using all five codecs including the popular PL level and up to the top 444. Button claims Its a big deal for editors. To simplify the workflow AJA Cions pack drives are HFS formatted and so can go straight into Apple via a an AJA Thunderbolt dock.

It sounds very good and well suited to fit right in with many workflows so, surely, its going to cost a packet? Not so. The press gasped when the price was announced as $8,995.

But there were plenty more new 4K cameras at the show. JVC introduced three all with 4K Super35mm image sensors - a mini camera system with interchangeable Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, a compact camera/recorder and a shoulder-mount camera with PL interchangeable lens mount.
Blackmagic Design added two new 4K cameras to its huge product range. The first thing I heard about the Blackmagic URSA was its 10-inch fold-out on-set monitor! Indeed many manufacturers have realised that you have to provide a larger screen so the cameraman can see if his is focussed and capturing all the 4K detail. This camera claims to be the first high end digital film camera designed to revolutionize workflow on set. Interesting! It offers built in a Super 35 global shutter 4K image sensor, 12G-SDI and internal dual RAW and ProRes recorders, Super 35 size sensor and EF lens mount. Also Blackmagic Studio Camera designed as a broadcast camera for live production, also with a 10-inch viewfinder, MFT lens mount, talkback, tally and more. As you may expect the prices are low from £3,785 for the URSA and £1,275 for the Studio Camera making 4K shooting very accessible to prosumers.

Sony added to its estimable 4K offerings with the new 4K ±7S DSLR-style full-frame camera boasting up to ISO 409600 with supremely low noise, courtesy of Sonys new 12.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS image sensor and optimized high-speed BIONZ X image processing engine.

These are just a few of the new cameras at NAB, including, for the first time, Panasonic. There is no doubt that 4K, even low-cost 4K, production is becoming readily available. It will be interesting to see how well low-cost productions look at the advised viewing distance of 1.5x screen height, on those big 4K screens. ARRI has quite rightly pointed out that the industry is introducing a bigger format when HD has not yet been allowed to show its full potential to viewers. But it is rumoured that they are developing a 6K camera possibly to provide the advantage of an oversampled 4K image. With the exception of the digital signage industry which is always deeply into the format, exactly where and how 4K will be widely used is not yet clear.

The road ahead is still long and will have many a winding turn!

5 reasons to use a soft box with LED lighting
James Mathers LEDs are a highly efficient light source, and putting aside any color spectrum issues, (that have generally been improving) they still have limitations for lighting people. Boradcast playout on-site and in the cloud
Don Ash Broadcasters come in many shapes and sizes, each with their own unique set of ambitions and their own preferred route to success. Some are happy to innovate, particularly if it increases staff efficiency or reduces operating costs. Others prefer to let their competitors do the innovating and then follow whatever path appears to work best. Thus the industry has advanced from dedicated hardware to more flexible and cost-efficient software running on 'enterprise-platform' comput-ers, and more recently to virtual devices.

50 years in and the show must go on
John Smith -new At IBC we always look forward to meeting old faces and new. For those more recently acquainted with the broadcast industry, you may not realise IBC was born half a century ago in London. In 1967 the show, held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, attracted just 32 exhibitors and 500 delegates. However, its popularity grew and the exhibition quickly upgraded with a move to the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, followed by the Wembley Conference Centre, before moving to Brighton.

While one may look pretty much the same as the next, we know that the subtle differences between varieties can make a huge difference in how we choose to use them some are best for pies, some better for cider, and others just perfect for eating from the tree.

The CN-E Cinema Prime lenses became an early alternative to using PL adaptors or the Zeiss Compact Prime lenses. Bruce Devlin - new Content is still King, but only if you can get it out to the consumer. I have just had the privilege of doing a live episode of Bruce's Shorts at the EBU IMF Workshop in Geneva. It was a privilege because I was able to talk about real world issues in making IMF compositions rather than talking about the theory of IMF. I was happy that people laughed at the jokes but even happier that people were taking notes and came up to discuss practical solutions to these difficult problems.

Oliver Botti Competition in the TV arena is hotting-up for traditional broadcasters with even ESPN, a strong-hold of sports TV, seeing a reduction in subscriptions with the number of American homes paying to get the service declining by more than 12m since 2011. With Mintel reporting that the subscription video streaming market in the UK is due to exceed revenues of GBP 1 billion (EURO 1.37 billion) by 2019, and account for 38% of the total UK video market, traditional broadcasters clearly cannot afford to turn a blind eye.
