New workflows floating on the horizon
Lee Sheppard - new The way in which we consume content has fundamentally changed. We want to watch what we want, when we want, where we want and how we want, and we want to find programmes quickly, preferably in HD or increasingly UHD. Content is king and in order to satisfy consumer requirements it is essential media companies can locate their material quickly and easily.

Editing broadcast video in a mobile app a ridiculous notion or the next big thing
Jason Cowan A trend appears to be developing in broadcast technology development the more ridiculous an idea initially seems, the better the chances are that it will turn the whole industry on its head. Ten years ago editing over an internet connection was a pipe-dream, and the suggestion that broadcast equipment might be replaced with standard IT was considered preposterous as recently as five years ago. Yet working in the cloud, on standard IT equipment has revolutionised post-production and enabled workflows we never thought possible.

Venice live productions tools go to the consumer
Tim Felstead The objective of most studio production is to cost effectively create live or as live television to which audiences will be drawn. During the process of creation, recording into media servers can either be a separate process used only for immediate replay, or can be part of a media workflow serving multiple target audiences in parallel. Rohde and Schwarz have invested heavily in its Venice Media Production Hub to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements for the latter. A media production hub is a central component of media workflows, managing movements and transformations from one media type to another.

Our third digital revolution?
Bob Pank# A little history the first digital revolution for the TV production and post industries started somewhere about 1972 and then involved introducing digital islands into an analogue world. The introduction of much more affordable digital VTRs such as Sonys DigiBeta in 1993 heralded the beginning of the end of analogue.

Waste not, want not
N/A One of the most interesting comments I heard at NAB this year was from Gary Greenfield, the CEO of Avid. Picking up the topic of making the most of content across multiple platforms, he said nothing is left on the cutting room floor any more. That started me thinking about how technology has allowed us to get profligate, and whether we are now at a point when we need to turn back to being parsimonious.

Every Cloud has a Purple Lining.
N/A Cloud computing has been around a long time. I seem to remember right back in the 1980s the phrase distributed processing describing one, if not the first, evolutionary step towards the concept of the Cloud. I am not sure when it acquired the nomenclature Cloud but most people in IT have been aware of it probably for a decade or more. It seems that only recently has the idea caught on in a big way in media and broadcast.

Taking the pain out of collaborative editing
N/A Broadcast and post-production companies face the daily challenge of delivering more for less both in terms of time and money. Whilst the industry has been quick to embrace the efficiencies of file-based workflows and enhancements in the creative editing process, the reality - for companies of all sizes - is that the effective and secure management of media data remains complex and expensive.

Eye to Eye: Video Post-production
N/A This columns previous excursion into video post-production was just before the 2011 NAB Spring Convention, always a dangerous time to talk about new hardware or software when a deluge of upgrades, lookalikes and lite-editions are about to hit the aisles of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Quite a lot has happened in this category over the past 12 months, notably in editing and content restoration.

Stereoscopic production and transmission
N/A If ever there was a technology that has taken its time to mature, it is that of stereoscopic (3D) production and transmission.
