Tried and tested: DPA d:vice
KitPlus KitPlus recently took delivery of an interesting piece of equipment for review. We like our iPhone gadgets here. For us, useful iPhone gadgets started when the Olloclip lens gave us a wide angle adaptor. This was a good start, finally evolving into a proper tool when Ziess produced the Exolens system for the 5,6 & 7 series iPhones. Around the same time as the Olloclip came out we were testing the Fostex AR4i which was a very exciting development at the time. You have a portable device, that you carry everywhere with you, connected to the world but with very limited audio capabilities. A stereo interface with decent microphones was a real boon!

Budgeting and controlling costs
Den Lennie This is a very important aspect of running a production, and one you have to keep a close eye on. Its very simple; you have your actual hard costs in one budget and you have what youre charging the client in another. Lets say you charge the client £450 per day for the camera package, but the rental house is only charging you £350. Having those figures in separate budgets allows you to calculate your overall gross margin for the project.

Dealing with clients
Den Lennie For many clients, the prospect of commissioning a video production leaves one key consideration in their minds and that is: how much is it all going to cost? Particularly for marketing departments or smaller businesses which may only spend a nominal amount of money on advertising. Video production by its very nature involves more personnel and more costs and will likely be inherently more expensive than some graphic design work or print advertising.

Seven thoughts for the New Year
Larry Jordan# It is my favorite time of year - a time of resolutions and predictions. Resolutions are fun. They showcase all the things we would like to have happen in the New Year - provided they don't take too much work on our part. While resolutions are personal, predictions are a group sport. So, after another year writing about our industry and talking with the key movers and shakers, here are seven trends I expect to dominate our thinking in 2015.

Making It Easy To Be In Two Places At Once

3D to see at IBC 2010
Bob Pank# IBC2010 marks the fourth year when the new wave of Stereoscopic 3D took hold at the show. Thats three years of time for development and implementation. While cinema is racing ahead, taking a good extra percentage of people at the door who pay a 3D premium price television in Europe is only just beginning. Sky is the pioneer for the UK, going on air in October soon after the show. This will, surely be a defining moment when 3D comes to TV not just for a special event but to stay.
