The Transistion in Audio Monitoring
Shane Toven As signal chains have become increasingly complex, the challenges involved in managing and monitoring these paths have multiplied exponentially. Over the past few decades, we've migrated from handling a single channel of content using composite video and analog audio pairs, to elaborate multi-channel facilities routing HD video with embedded audio over SDI or in many cases discrete AES pairs. These audio signals are often a mix of 5.1 and stereo programs and in many cases encoded to or decoded from Dolby at some point in the chain.

Loudness Measurement and Control Strategies For The UK Broadcast Market
Manik Gupta A common issue that today's broadcast ,cable, and satellite operators face is inconsistent loudness. Over the years, the loudness levels of some commercials have been deliberately increased to catch audiences' attention. Ultimately, inconsistent loudness between regular programming and advertisements has discouraged continued viewing and resulted in consumer complaints.

4k is a reality for live production
Liam Laminman

Some aspects of the broadcast industry move exceedingly quickly; new cameras are launched seemingly daily, shows are commissioned and shows are axed but the overall pace of the industry remains pretty steady. Would it shock you to hear that NHK in Japan first built its own 4K prototype camera in 2003? (At this point, it's worth clarifying that we're using the term '4K' to reference UHDTV1 (3840—2160) but '4K' seems to have shone through as the saleable name tag.) Today, just a mere 13 years later it looks like we're now ready to adopt 4K. It is now a reality within the industry and for the everyday consumer.

Exceptional loudness control does not have to break the bank
Oliver Masciarotte The industry is buzzing about loudness control. EBU R128 and other such legislation around the world attempts to provide some level of consistency in perceived loudness between a program and its interstitials, hence the concept of loudness control.

Here is the news
N/A In mid-May the EBU and SMPTE brought together many of the great and the good of the television industry and me to a forum on emerging media technologies. Held in Geneva, in a hotel expensive even by Swiss standards, it was supposed to set the agenda for the future, to share solutions so the future will be bright.

Its a MADI World
N/A At this years NAB Show in Las Vegas, 3D solutions were still a hot topic but one emerging technology threatened to steal the show. In fact, the rapid growth of devices that support the Multichannel Audio Digital Interface (MADI) has more potential for simplifying broadcasting operations than perhaps anything else. But what exactly is MADI and why should we care?

Working With Audio Signals
N/A For most of the past century, working with audio signals was a very straightforward process. The audio information was converted to electrical signals in the form of a varying voltage between the two conductors in a pair (balanced) or between a conductor and the ground reference (unbalanced). The bandwidth, frequency response, distortion and noise requirements of audio circuits were all well-defined. Interconnecting audio equipment was a simple matter of matching impedance and levels, usually accomplished with simple circuits of passive devices.
