Assets in the air
Paul Wilkins People everywhere are talking about "the cloud", as if it is somehow something (1) new and (2) intrinsically exciting. It really is neither of those things. In the IT world, software as a service (SaaS) has been around since the 1960's when organisations bought the use of mainframe software on a time-sharing basis.

Radio cameras bring a live broadcast to life
Tony Valentino Radio cameras bring a live broadcast to life - especially news, sports and studio shows - by their ability to roam around and move in closer to a subject. They capture a more natural spectator's view than a camera that is fixed at one point, and usually get the most intimate shots and the most exciting angles in a production. Today they are indispensable for covering large outdoor events - but if they have a weakness, it is probably the antenna.

Intimate and Extreme

Camera Operations (part 2)
Peter Leverick In Part 1 (issue 110) I addressed the practical skills required by Camera Operators aspiring to enter the Broadcast TV market. A good camera operator also needs to have good artistic senses and abilities. Like practical skills this is something that is acquired through training and practice. As with all training and practice the trainee needs to have access to a good trainer and the time to observe & practice. Trainer input alone does not make a good cameraman; a Trainer should give the student an understanding of what is required through explanation and demonstration, from that point on, it is down to the student to watch high end Broadcast output and practice/practice/practice what he or she sees and has learnt.

Shooting the Extreme
Mel Noonan Steffan Hewitt started covering extreme sports as a cameraman and learnt to ski backwards while shooting skiers in front of him. Surprisingly he survived, and went on to design and use a lightweight pole with an early SD minicam slung at the top operated via a remote pan and tilt head from the other end. He called it Polecam.

CLASS - FIMS: A plug-and-play solution
Bruce Devlin No two broadcasters are alike. Meaning, that just about every broadcaster in the world uses its own, customized workflow comprised of any number of proprietary tools and solutions, specially designed to work together. With so many systems with proprietary interfaces in existence, IT-based media projects require a great deal of integrations. As the industry evolves and new technology becomes available, this makes solutions very complex and costly to deploy and maintain.

The key to stability
Mark Scotton Moving shots dont just enhance video production, they bring it to life and allow the viewer to experience what they are watching. This isnt something new, but the options we now have available to bring productions to life are more varied and readily available than ever before. No longer do you need a Hollywood budget and a large crew of helpers to get some wonderful footage, you simply need your camera, a bit of decent equipment and some imagination.

Talking Steadicam and Exovest
David Crute There were only about 10 UK Steadicam operators when I started, and very few that owned a rig. It was a massive investment for me as a young cameraman. The reason I did it was very simply that I found myself in this unusual position of doing both film and video work. I enjoyed working in both drama and in television.

The evolution of vision mixers
Liam Laminman At the heart of any multi-camera production is a vision mixer or production switcher as some people call them. Its core role is the switching of different sources, primarily cameras, often VTs and sometimes incoming external sources such as remote feeds from broadcasters. Even for non-TV types, thats relatively simple enough to get your head round several different incoming video signals can be switched from one to the next. Vision mixers come into their own when you look at their secondary features of keying graphics, transitions and digital effects.

Distribution in the UHD Era
Paul Briscoe Once upon a time, there were few broadcast TV standards. Each used its own regional image formats, color encoding scheme and sound and vision modulation standards. High-power over-the-air (OTA) transmitters broadcast the signal on internationally coordinated and regionally allocated radio frequency (RF) channels, making it easy for viewers to tune in programs. It was a robust model that forever shifted the entertainment paradigm. The upstream technologies quietly evolved from analog to digital, and home TV sets reached the performance limits the standards allowed. This was a simple, stable ecosystem, based on a daily programming schedule of shows and monetized by interstitial soap commercials. Life was simple, and people were happy.

DIY Camera dollies, flatbed vs T frame and is it worth it?
Alasdair Brenninkmeijer As filmmakers we are creatives and sometimes we see a simple product as a waste of money, saying "I could make that." Sure enough with enough time, maybe we could, but is it really worth it? Lets take a camera dolly for example. The challenge is to create something to smoothly move the camera from one point to another, sounds simple right?

Every election counts
Charlie Watts Let me set the scene. In September 2014 we were contacted by ITV Meridian News and asked if we would be interested in helping film declarations from the Hampshire and Sussex constituencies. It was just before the start of the new academic year, and we figured, sure, that's months away, why not! And so begun the slow build up to what we believe was a U.K first, with Meridian arranging to work with HE institutions in the South of the country to gather a wider and more comprehensive recording of election counts.

Cautionary notes from GTC Member number 001
Dick Hibberd Recently I was invited to be on the panel of judges charged with selecting the winners of the 2014 'Bill Vinten GTC University Awards'. The Autoue Motion Pro camera stabiliser
Matt Lyne

The Autocue Motion Pro camera stabiliser is a brilliant piece of kit for getting high movement shots whilst also maintaining the ability to pan/tilt with ease. It is light compared to similar functioning stabilisers however prolonged use will quickly tire out your arm due to the manner in which you hold it with one hand at almost arms length but that said, it’s far less tiring than similar steadicams such as a Glidecam.
