Authoring and Monitoring for the emerging 3D immersive Broadcast Audio formats
Anthony Wilkins The world of broadcast audio is on the verge of a major revolution. Numerous 3D Immersive formats are under development and will find their way into the mainstream of broadcast production and distribution in the near future. Unlike the world of relatively constrained channel based coding as we are accustomed to (most commonly Left / Right for Stereo and Left / Centre / Right / Surround Left / Surround Right + LFE or Low Frequency Effects for surround), these new codecs will support more channels and/or object based audio coding. For the end consumer, there will be two major benefits from this new approach, a greater sense of involvement or immersion, and a degree of personalisation.

Distribution in the UHD Era
Paul Briscoe Once upon a time, there were few broadcast TV standards. Each used its own regional image formats, color encoding scheme and sound and vision modulation standards. High-power over-the-air (OTA) transmitters broadcast the signal on internationally coordinated and regionally allocated radio frequency (RF) channels, making it easy for viewers to tune in programs. It was a robust model that forever shifted the entertainment paradigm. The upstream technologies quietly evolved from analog to digital, and home TV sets reached the performance limits the standards allowed. This was a simple, stable ecosystem, based on a daily programming schedule of shows and monetized by interstitial soap commercials. Life was simple, and people were happy.

Eye to Eye: Video Post-production
N/A Video post-production has long been one of the fastest developing subsets of the broadcast business. It was among the first to lead the shift from hardware into software, bringing huge advantages in terms of affordability and ease of use. I can still remember the high cost, heavy weight and low quality of the early analogue tape to tape video editing systems. The expression 'colour comes later' returns to mind. IBC will see the introduction of quite a lot of new video-post kit including a respectable amount designed to handle 3D content which I will start off with.

The Digital Production Partnership
Simon Pegg The Digital Production Partnership (DPP) was founded in January 2011 by the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, with representation from Sky, Channel 5, S4/C, UKTV, and BT Sport, to help speed the transition to fully digital production and distribution in television. As part of its work, the group has established common delivery standards based on the AS-11 file format and the UKDPP shim intended to maximize the ease and efficiency of an all digital workflow by providing a tightly constrained medium for file-based content delivery.

Demystifying the black art of digital audio
Alan Wheable At the pure analogue end of the audio world (which these days is very narrow with much of the audio content being captured digitally) it is quite straight forward to check that an audio channel is present, that it sounds right and has the right levels. Likewise if the audio channel has hum or a buzz on it is relatively easy to identify the problem and fix it.

Do you think 3D Broadcasting in its current format is likely to gain much market share?
N/A
There are two issues that affect the potential growth of 3D in broadcasting: they are the widespread availability of 3D enabled devices, and the cost of producing and broadcasting 3D content. All HD TV sets from major manufacturers over 40 inches that are sold today include 3D capability, so the end-user market of 3D capable viewers is growing by default. 3D is not even a remarkable selling point any more for the latest TVs: if you take the Samsung Smart TV as an example, this is marketed as a connected TV - the 3D capability is advertised with just a small label on the box. So there is a growing potential market of viewers for 3D content providers.

N/A High-speed transfer technologies help move the worlds digital assets at maximum speed regardless of file size, transfer distance and network conditions. And now that content-producing organisations and broadcasters are turning to cloud-based infrastructure as well as services for improved efficiency and scalability, the need for high-performance movement of data to and from the cloud is critical.
