MAM needs to adapt or die

The media landscape has shifted dramatically over recent years. Content providers are under increasing pressure to deliver compelling content to multiple platforms. Also, the production and distribution of video is no longer limited to traditional broadcasters, which face rising competition from a range of media providers. We are also seeing a massive increase in video being produced to broadcast quality by companies using it for other purposes, such as marketing, site surveys, internal communications, and a whole host of other applications.

All this means that the way in which that media is managed, processed, and distributed has changed and varies from user to user. I believe that we will see some very specific trends over the coming year, which will have a knock-on effect on how media is managed.

Hybrid Cloud

The first major trend is the move to Hybrid Cloud. With many content providers fearful of the cloud, whilst seeing its benefits, a hybrid cloud approach gives them the best of both worlds. Over the coming months I believe we will see more hybrid cloud deployments, as well as a slew of more software releases to enable this. The hybrid cloud will be deployed in a number of different ways, including for content acquisition, file management and storage. Content providers will likely, for the most part and for the short-term, keep their high speed editing SANs but increasingly manage movement of that content between offices using the cloud.

We are already seeing some deployments from major broadcasters and content providers and we have installed some hybrid cloud deployments of Cantemo Portal. This move to hybrid cloud means that MAM systems need to be able to manage that flow of content even more precisely, ensuring only the right content is sent to the cloud at the right point in its lifecycle.

Deep Learning

Deep learning is becoming increasingly important for media players, enabling a whole slew of possibilities to personalise content and recommendations, for example. We are beginning to see a number of different players in the market place coming up with deep learning toolsets, such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Nvidia. As the technology progresses, and it is progressing really fast, we are seeing more and more apps being able to do object, face and logo recognition, event recognition, and location identification, and actually do it well.

In the media management scenario, this of course means that there will be an increase in the number of ways in which we can analyse video, images and audio coming in. It will be crucial that content providers are able to classify and tag assets to be able to find them more easily and understand what they have in the system.

Virtual Reality

Walking around IBC, it was clear to see that Virtual Reality (VR) remains a hot topic and continues to attract a great deal of innovation. That said, when it comes to TV and film content, I believe it is a while before we see any major traction and I'm not entirely convinced we will ever see it as an everyday experience in the majority of homes. Partly, that is because of the need for expensive hardware, but also because generally TV remains a social viewing experience, which is not as easy if you all have to wear headsets.

What I do believe we will see over the coming months is the increased use of VR in the b-to-b world. Some major firms are already using it to collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the world or help customers visualise a building project, for example. We will begin to see others tapping into this potential, and across a range of different sectors.

As the use of VR content increases, whether that be for consumer entertainment or b-to-b collaboration, MAM systems will need to be able to cope with that content, ensuring that users can view and edit VR content within the MAM environment.

Traditional MAM is extinct

It is clear that in this ever evolving market, traditional MAM systems are simply not flexible enough to deal with modern media management requirements. It is very different from the days of big broadcasters with large volumes of content all being distributed to the same channel, in the same format, and in the same way. With so many different formats and channels, the traditional MAM systems will either need to adapt over the coming months or they will simply become extinct.

Tried and tested: DPA d:vice
KitPlus KitPlus recently took delivery of an interesting piece of equipment for review. We like our iPhone gadgets here. For us, useful iPhone gadgets started when the Olloclip lens gave us a wide angle adaptor. This was a good start, finally evolving into a proper tool when Ziess produced the Exolens system for the 5,6 & 7 series iPhones. Around the same time as the Olloclip came out we were testing the Fostex AR4i which was a very exciting development at the time. You have a portable device, that you carry everywhere with you, connected to the world but with very limited audio capabilities. A stereo interface with decent microphones was a real boon!

VR and the importance of tracking
KitPlus I would like to begin this article by clarifying what we at Shotoku mean when we talk about VR in live production. It’s not the production of immersive, 360 content where you need to wear a headset; we are talking about virtual studio (VS) and augmented reality (AR) work, such as placing graphics into a green screen environment or physical set. The technology used for this work is entirely different, though equally specialist – therefore it is important to understand the challenges of this kind of production in order to make informed kit choices.

On the most recent occasion I was trimmed, my hairdresser had just returned from a holiday in Hawaii.

Where she thought she was going to die. She thought this because the state’s emergency alert system was triggered, sending messages across all available platforms, for 38 minutes, that a ballistic missile was about to strike. That, I suspect, is the sort of thing that casts a pall across your holiday.

Why did it happen? Essentially it happened because an operator selected the wrong menu item. “I feel very badly from what’s happened,” he is quoted as saying, in a somewhat mangled version of English which may at least in part explain his difficulties with menu items.

TVFutures: Learning is the key

A new AEON in Wireless 4k
JP Delport Whatever production companies are doing right here, right now, today, with wireless HD production tools, they want to do right here, right now, today with 4K UHD. That’s great, but common wisdom would share a host of challenges around 4k UHD, not least, the fact that 4K UHD requires 8x the processing power to transmit, then demands additional horsepower (and bandwidth) to accommodate the data and controls, wireless or otherwise, and of course, when you ramp up processing power, you ramp up heat generation, which needs to be efficiently evacuated.

Empowering connectivity choice in the field

According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index: Forecast and Methodology 2016–2021, video will make up 82 percent of all consumer internet traffic by 2021, an increase from 73 percent in 2016. The dangers of live streaming without a license

Its obvious that there are people who create sound/s and visuals. Copyright laws were created to protect the industry and these artists. Many organisations have been created to look after musician, writers, poets and filmmakers. IP or not IP, that is the question
Brian Larter There can be a one size fits all approach to prompting, but with the many forms of production in todays broadcasting world - from a major sporting event, to the biggest Saturday night entertainment show, to a 24-hour news operation or prompting on location - it is unlikely that a single system will suit every circumstance.
