Each day, clips and other promotional materials needed to be transferred from the shooting location in South Africa to Network Tens editors in Sydney, Australia. However, the shows distant and isolated filming location in the South African jungle posed some major challenges for the broadcaster. Editors were required to deliver large video files intercontinentally over poor network conditions and with a lack of infrastructure that was not conducive to file transfer.

Despite the difficult circumstances, the Australian broadcaster successfully implemented our efficient cloud-based delivery solution, Aspera On Demand (AOD). Built on our patented FASP technology, AOD was able to achieve the fast, stable and secure transfer of promotional content to Network Tens headquarters in Sydney after each day of filming wrapped up. Up to 10 files per day were delivered, with each file reaching 20 to 60 GB.

Asperas subscription-based faspex On Demand breaks the bottleneck for big data and enabled Network Ten to tap into the cloud-based resources they needed throughout the three-month project and to then scale back those resources after the shows completion.

The solution streamlined Network Tens workflow, enabling promo editors in South Africa to deliver packaged clips at high speed to editors in Sydney, where files were automatically downloaded via Aspera Cargo and ready to be polished and finalised before airing on the network.

Aspera was able to relieve many of the pain points Network Ten had experienced previously with standard FTP transfers. During initial testing, our solutions were able to maintain 25 Mbps speeds consistently by fully utilising available bandwidth. Sending the same file with FTP resulted in rates of less than 2 Mbps and was prone to peaks and valleys throughout the transfer.

Security was also a big concern, and it was crucial that any materials related to this popular show be kept safe and confidential. Network Ten benefited from the protection offered by our solutions built-in security features, which include encryption in transit and at rest as well as user authentication.

Juan Quintero, technology manager at Network Ten, commented: The speed in getting promo content here was paramount; we needed it straight away, and traditional FTP transfers werent cutting it for us.. Several of our content producers use Aspera to deliver content to us, so it was the first solution we looked at and the obvious choice for our file delivery needs.

In summary, Aspera On Demand unlocks the full capabilities of the cloud by enabling users to move content with speed and security while maintaining the immense scalability and subscription-based model that make the cloud so desirable. In the future, whether its for the next season of Im a Celebrity¦ Get Me Out Of Here! or a different show, Network Ten can depend on Aspera to move their valuable video materials quickly and securely to any place they need to be, whether thats around the globe or across town.

John Wastcoat, VP of business development at Aspera discusses how Network Ten, an Australian commercial broadcasting network, needed to move large content packages over the course of three months for the inaugural Australian spinoff of the television show, Im a Celebrity¦ Get Me Out of Here!

Why are trade shows still important
Mike Crimp First, the disclaimer: as the CEO of a rather large trade show, my opinion is likely to be skewed. However, I wouldn’t be here – now in my eighth year at IBC - if I didn’t truly believe that well-curated trade shows like IBC are a hugely important resource for our industry.

Taking on a self employed placement year
Joshua Round The idea of being self-employed or freelancing has always been somewhat terrifying for me. There is a level of uncertainty and responsibility that comes with the freedom of being self-employed, the likes of which makes me wonder why I chose to give it a go for my placement year as part of my university course - (BSc) Television and Broadcasting.

Creating Authentic Content That Counts
Frank le Mair We’re deep into the 2010’s and the way in which we consume content has changed forever. Broadcasters and content owners are fighting for eyeballs in a saturated market where consumers are watching their favourite shows on different devices across a number of platforms. To target millennials and younger generations, who generally consume short bursts of video on YouTube and social media - particularly Snapchat, Instagram and now IGTV - media companies are creating more and more authentic stories and are using platforms that are compelling for this demographic. Unlike generations before them, they have totally new video viewing patterns and ideals.

How todays technology platforms can make AMAZING seem mundane
Bruce Devlin - new Some things never change. It's September and it's time for another IBC. Maybe I'm getting old and maybe I have selective memory about the past, but recently there hasn't been the buzz of years gone by. Sure, as you wander around the vast halls there will be lots of enthusiastic sales people trying to give you the best demo possible, but something has changed and to survive, I believe that vendors and customers need to change too.
