The challenges of media workflow automation
Dave Clark The media workflow challenge has never been more complex, and it's growing. In response exploding consumer demand for high-quality, engaging programming, media operations are under the gun to create content and deliver it to an ever-growing range of platforms and devices. Managing video assets - that is finding them, accessing them, and using them efficiently and effectively - is one of the biggest barriers to success in today's environment.

Why you might regret automating QC workflows
Bruce Devlin In todays electronic media environment, broadcasters and content owners live and die according to the quality and versatility of their media assets. Not only do consumers expect the best quality viewing experience, but they also expect that viewing experience to be possible on the widest range of devices, at any time and in any situation.

Tapeless Workflows, MAM and Archive: Back to Basics
Michael Shore The broadcast industrys appetite for file-based workflows existed long before the technology required to implement them was available. With the emergence of cheap capture hardware, the continually decreasing cost of storage and the ever-increasing capabilities of inexpensive computing power, the transition from tape-based to tapeless workflows has finally become a reality. The primary impetus for this shift comes from a long proven economic motivator: its cheaper.

Full reference testing helps ensure quality audio delivery
Adam Schadle With the ever-increasing amount and variety of programming, devices, screen sizes, quality levels, and delivery methods today, broadcasters and delivery networks must be able to measure the quality of audiovisual content - and their processes for delivering it - to ensure it will meet standards that satisfy audiences, subscribers, advertisers, and regulators.

Cloud Editing at BVE
KitPlus As Media Partners at BVE 2015 KitPlus was responsible for recording, editing and publishing 50+ hours of video content from the event seminars, roaming reporters and studio discussions over the course of the show. With material coming from different sources, crew and post-production staff consisting largely of students with varying levels of proficiency and tight timelines thrown into the mix we needed a post-production solution that was quick to set up, easy to learn and provided a creative and reliable solution. After chatting with Forbidden Technologies for a while we decided to use their Forscene platform.

Four must-haves for modern media workflows: Enhancing your MAM solutions
Laurent Fanichet It's always been about the struggle to manage lots of assets and adapt your MAM to suit in the world of digital media workflows. In the early years, enterprise storage infrastructure couldn't keep pace with the demands of SD, so the first non-linear editing systems were turnkey solutions with proprietary file and file system formats. In the last decade or so, IT-based solutions have finally caught up, and open solutions for shared storage are now readily available at price points affordable for even boutique post houses.

Fixing it in parallel
Daniele Siragusano Whenever something went wrong in television production, the cry was always "We'll fix it in post". Except that there was rarely enough time, in a broadcast schedule, to fix anything. Today we expect every programme - even routine television programmes like daily dramas - to look and sound perfect. But we still do not have enough time to correct everything in post. The only answer is to find a better way of working.

Still unsure about cloud editing? Read this..
Stephen Streater For all the talk about the cloud in the past couple of years, it can still be a bit of a mystery. When it comes to editing video in the cloud, some people still struggle with the concept. Is cloud editing secure? Do I need special knowledge? Why switch from traditional editing workflows? Won't cloud editing use a lot of bandwidth, especially with 4K video? Those are fair questions, and ones that often keep people from incorporating the cloud into their workflows.

Ask the experts: Content readiness in time-deferred workflows
Sudeep Bose When focusing on the actual content itself, rather than the service, network or other components, the key is the readiness of content to be used. For instance, a piece of media must be syntactically correct in order to ensure that it causes no downstream issues in the workflow and that it will play and decode properly.

Singularity - QA and compliance monitoring in one box
Martin Dyster The task of maintaining loudness-compliant, high-quality delivery for broadcast audio is no longer a question of simply using ones ears. Audio channels produced for todays fast-paced productions come in embedded SDI workflow with streaming signals containing a mix of mono, stereo, surround, Dolby encoded and descriptive audio, as well as alternative mixes and multiple language tracks. Maintaining a quality audio track using this disparate mix of audio elements is one part of the QA equation facing broadcasters.

Bob Pank busts the cloud!
Bob Pank#

Too may of us can remember the Eyjafjallajokull volcano incident that stopped thousands of Europeans travelling back from NAB 2010. After a long show in the desert many were looking forward to home, real beer and green green grass. But the transport system that had always worked so well was out of commission, and suddenly it was clear that nothing could be done except keeping in touch with the airline, and hoping.

Taking on the World of Sophisticated Asset Management
N/A Asset management systems have come a long way in only a few years. Theyve always offered a world of promise for workflow improvements, but not so long ago asset management silos were the norm with individual departments within a broadcasting operation - such as news, sports production, and drama - operating their own closed systems, inaccessible to staff in the other departments. Next-generation asset management architectures made a definite improvement on this model by providing transparent, enterprise-wide systems that aimed to make assets available to any authorized personnel, working in any department.

Managing Media
N/A Looking after the media for a television production used to be a relatively simple task. The footage would be shot and captured on tape. The tapes would be delivered to the post-production facility for editing. They would be ingested into the edit system, the editor would construct the final program and it would be recorded back to tape. All the tapes would then go back to the production company and the job was finished. I know this is a gross simplification, but the point was that the media started on and ended up on physical tapes; you knew how many there were and where they were because they were sitting on the shelf. You could log them, bar code them, dupe them, put them in a safe, leave them in a taxi, but there was no doubt about it; that was where the programme and all its footage was; on the tapes.

N/A High-speed transfer technologies help move the worlds digital assets at maximum speed regardless of file size, transfer distance and network conditions. And now that content-producing organisations and broadcasters are turning to cloud-based infrastructure as well as services for improved efficiency and scalability, the need for high-performance movement of data to and from the cloud is critical.

3D Post at NAB, Wimbledon, and more
Bob Pank# You may recall that last time 3D Diaries tackled the subject of post production in August 2010, it warned that the fix it in post habit was definitely to be avoided. This means shoot it correctly in the first place, as trying to fix errors, especially the 3D ones, in post can get very tricky and, may be expensive.
