I am a digital imaging technician and editor with more than 15 years of experience in the film and television industry. I have traveled the world working with various production companies on popular network reality series, such as TNT's "72 Hours," National Geographic Channel's "Ultimate Survival Alaska," and MTV's "Are You The One?" I'm also the editor for Theory Studios, an online animation studio that produces short cartoons and VFX. I came up in the industry as a camera operator, but in the past five years I have moved into data management.
If you have got to the back of this magazine, you cannot fail to have noticed that it is issue number 100. I asked Simon Tillyer and Matt Robbins, the dynamic duo behind the publication, how it all started.
The objective of most studio production is to cost effectively create live or as live television to which audiences will be drawn. During the process of creation, recording into media servers can either be a separate process used only for immediate replay, or can be part of a media workflow serving multiple target audiences in parallel. Rohde and Schwarz have invested heavily in its Venice Media Production Hub to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements for the latter. A media production hub is a central component of media workflows, managing movements and transformations from one media type to another.
Assignment: To film 24/7 the six week decay of a dead five tonne adult elephant in the wild.
Reason: to learn how the death creates six million calories of fat, meat and guts, feeding a whole new cycle of life.
On Friday 10th September, Fluidmoves Video Productions, filmed a new outfall pipe leaving Shoreham Harbour on the Sussex coast. The 1.8 kilometre pipe was towed out to sea through the open lock gates round to Newhaven Harbour, a distance of 15 nautical miles, on behalf of Southern Water and its contractor 4Delivery. The outfall is part of Southern Waters £300 million environmental improvement scheme to bring cleaner seas to Sussex.
So, how do you get the feed from 8 full HD camera's, games console screen captures, and a remote camera feed from 6 miles away to over 180,000 live game junkies all waiting to see the release of what is likely to be the worlds fastest selling and most anticipated Console/PC Game to date?
We are all probably already tired of hearing the phrase cutting costs but the reality is that ways have to be continuously found to reduce our production costs in order to stay competitive.
The question is are some savings a false economy or are they really worth it?
I like to think of myself as a bit of a pioneer at the frontier of the new age of HD Digital Cinematography. Investigating the best of the new technology available to our industry and evaluating its possible impact.
We cannot ignore the fact that tapeless acquisition and workflow has become a ‘hot topic’ in recent months with programme makers recognising that like it or not, tapeless acquisition in HD is where television production is headed.
