The penultimate term studying Television and Broadcasting is a time to reflect upon my journey as a CCI TV manager thus far and look to the future. And as graduation starts to inch ever closer, I am now pondering the opportunities that lie ahead of me. When I think back to what I knew as I walked through the doors of the University, I can feel quite proud of how far I've come. I am much more aware of my strengths and what it takes to produce good broadcast quality television. I can't get too ahead of myself just yet however, as I still have plenty to do in my final year before I say goodbye to my student life and begin my journey exploring graduate jobs and taking that scary, exciting step into the world of employment.

Having settled into my role as scheduling manager, we are currently working as a team to ensure the smooth running of the channel alongside the Portsmouth Big Screen; a public platform for the CCI TV Channel to showcase our work. Utilising the CCI logo to cut back and forwards to and from the screen is an area that I am looking into in order to cater to the community and really iconise our brand.

Aside from the marketing capabilities in scheduling for the channel, a key factor I have learnt on my journey up to this point is the art of liaising with others. It certainly is an art and such a huge part of the television industry is knowing how to get along with people! Co-ordinating meetings with my course leader and tutors to ensure that the channel is running smoothly and proactively organising programming is just one thing I have learnt. But the progression doesn't stop here. I have decided to focus my dissertation upon these liaison skills and I will be working with first and second years in order to bridge the gap' and allow year groups to become more intertwined.

It is a common problem on a course like mine where year groups are unable to communicate with each other as often as they would like. Studying television and broadcasting means that you work very closely with your course mates which does not leave much room to share your advice and opinions with other year groups. It was in my second year of University, during our infamous 24 hour broadcast, that I found myself sharing my experiences and giving advice to other year groups. From here I decided to create a live television broadcast which would allow year groups to actively become involved in each other's work.

Focusing on mental health issues within the community, I plan to embrace the skills I have learnt in scheduling to benefit the programme. Working alongside marketing managers I am investigating effective ways of enticing viewers and the best ways to appeal to the target audience, all the while ensuring that the programme remains sensitive. Having an ethically strong-minded crew to aid me in my live broadcast is of utmost importance given the subject matter. Also the liaison duties I am undertaking will encourage first and second year students to consider the technical elements of production earlier in the course which will help them as they progress.

Using my scheduling knowledge my aim is to make Mind Matters timeless; I am determined that the programme will be featured on the CCI TV Channel over the Summer period and for a long time after I've graduated. It will have to remain as relevant today as it will next year, therefore providing as much support on this issue as possible. As well as this, I want to produce a programme that is not afraid to tread where others may not.

These past three years on this course has really encouraged me to push the boundaries of my ideas and has built my confidence. I feel able to produce and direct my own live broadcast which encapsulates everything I have learnt. I am aware that combining all these elements together will be really tough, but I respect the challenges I have to face - even welcome them with open arms!

John Griffiths As we write this article, England’s Lionesses have just beaten Norway 3-0 and are smashing viewing figure records, with 6.9 million viewers tuning in to watch them play Cameroon on BBC One. Rewind to the previous World Cup in 2015, and England’s group and early stage knockout games tempted up to 2.5 million viewers for each match. It’s safe to say that women’s football is finally having its moment; what was perhaps once considered a niche sport is finally gaining momentum in the mainstream space with broadcasters giving it the attention it deserves.

Making the Workflow Flow
Bruce Devlin - new The toughest things about being the Standards Vice President (SVP) is that everyone expects standards to be the most important thing. In all the systems that I’ve designed and deployed over the years, I've yet to find any production workflow that is 100% standards based. True, the core technologies may well be standards based, but the overall workflow is made up of many technology pieces from open source code, through de-facto delivery specifications based upon SMPTE or Trade Association Specifications that in turn depend on full, International Standards to work. I can already hear some folks saying "In the good old days, everything used standards", but I beg to disagree.

Michelle Brown I have often heard that any chance of getting work in the television industry is based quite heavily on who you know, and whilst that might indeed be true, I’ve also come to the realisation that it may also depends on what opportunities you seize and how far out of your comfort zone you might be prepared to push yourself.

Dick Hobbs - new One of the many attractions of this time of year is that I get to meet with my fellow judges for the IBC Innovation Awards, and see what the industry sees as the most important, most forward-looking projects of the day. For me, this says what the key talking points are going to be in September, far more eloquently than the endless press releases from vendors which are already tumbling into my inbox.
