Bob Pank looks at the size of 4k
Bob Pank# The television industry has had many new technological eras in recent years. Only two years ago we were still a 3D era; the latest of the many that have surfaced and sunk over the years of cinema, making it recurring fad. Now 4K / UHD is firmly grabbing the attention of equipment manufacturers as well as production and broadcaster / media folk, and increasingly, the public.

Evolutions in the media cloud with Bob Pank
Bob Pank# Years ago my boss, the sales director, warned me that talk of technical revolutions was not good. After all, a revolution ends up where it started. On the other hand evolutions were much better. Of course he was right.

4K is bigger than size alone
Bob Pank# It seems that numbers are a great eye-catcher and 4K was everywhere at NAB, and will be at IBC too. Here, of course, we are talking about a TV system with four times number of pixels of HD, namely a picture area of 3840x2160 for TV, or for cinema 4096x2160.

Cloud STB with Bob Pank
Bob Pank# Its like trying to get to Heathrow in time for your flight. Many of us have to go there by road and the journey will involve travelling on the UKs busiest motorways. Even outside rush hour the journey may be quick, or not so quick or a real nightmare. This is a bit like live streaming video on the Internet.

The Cloud, a big hit at NAB with Bob Pank
Bob Pank# NAB 2013 will go down in history as the event where the broadcast industry took to the Cloud in a big way. Perhaps it was the number of start-ups that have been successfully operating cloud services for a year, but more likely, these moves have been in the pipeline for a while.

Bob Pank starts counting cores...
Bob Pank# Once again BVE hosted its one-day Cloud seminar. The new ExCel location meant that the room was away from the show floor and ideal for concentrating on the words flowing from the experts. Full-on attention was needed as squeezing in nine sessions between 10.00 and 17.45 meant that each would be short, sharp and to the point, which was certainly the case for the two I attended.

Bob Pank busts the cloud!
Bob Pank#

Too may of us can remember the Eyjafjallajokull volcano incident that stopped thousands of Europeans travelling back from NAB 2010. After a long show in the desert many were looking forward to home, real beer and green green grass. But the transport system that had always worked so well was out of commission, and suddenly it was clear that nothing could be done except keeping in touch with the airline, and hoping.

Bob Pank looks at Editing and the Cloud
Bob Pank#

Historically video editing has been one of those operations shaped by technology. For decades it depended on VTRs to play and record. You had to go to an edit room, usually darkened and with loads of buttons and winking lights, to get your edit done by a video editor. It was not cheap. Then, with video stored on computer discs, editing went nonlinear, was much faster and more flexible, the control interface became a GUI and costs started to come down.

To cloud, or not to cloud
Bob Pank# Almost ever since it began, there have been two parameters that have played a big part in shaping broadcast television bandwidth and storage. Admittedly, storage was not an issue at the start because there was no way to do it, but Ampex changed that in 1956. Bandwidth dictates many aspects of infrastructure and broadcast picture quality, the amount of space that is needed to store TV footage, and much more.

3d Screens
Bob Pank# Often exhibitions such as IBC and NAB can be summed up as progressive slightly better products but nothing really new. Sometimes there is a breakthrough such as Ampexs introduction of the VTR in 1956. The early years of digital production and post tools were rich in totally new things. At the time I worked at Quantel and seeing inventions like Paintbox and a DVE video page turn for the first time was truly exciting; I knew these would be game-changers. What they did was instantly understandable and easy to apply. So, you may ask, why should it be that we are many years into the 3D revolution of the modern era and everyone knows what we really need to make 3DTV come alive, but we dont have.

Ubiquitous Cloud at IBC
Bob Pank# It was one of those IBCs that was more consolidation than innovation. There wasnt any one product or technology that stood out as a game changer. There was more evidence of 4K being pushed as a more realistic alternative to 8K and more of the must-have 84-inch 4K TV screens.

Cloud Storage and the end of silos
Bob Pank# It should not come as any surprise that people who specialise in one thing are not necessarily experts at other things. For example, and getting straight to the point, a great video editor cannot be expected to have the technical skills to securely store the edited master of his finished programme. The master is a valuable asset that is expected to be kept safe and sound. In days gone by, placing it on the shelf in an adjacent storeroom might have been OK but now that is hardly considered secure enough. Running off a copy and storing that somewhere else is good idea... but wait! Surely the editor is getting away from his prime skill editing. The truth is that there now are many choices for storage and it is easy to access top-notch storage services via the internet in the Cloud.

Summer of 3D
Bob Pank# Having put 3D to one side for a few months it was very interesting to jump back into the third dimension. With 3D not making the headlines much, if at all, you might be lulled into thinking it has faded away, but thats not the case. Many events are being shot in 3D, including the Olympics and, although there has been nothing happening that could be called a revolution, there is a great deal of evolution going on.

4KTV The next bigger thing?
Bob Pank# The history of 4K digital moving images goes way back to the mid 1990s. That was when film effects started to be processed digitally and produced amazing results maybe a bit too amazing for some. Of course the effects had to be seamless and so the digitised effects images had to carry all the required detail of the 35mm film. Without going into detail Kodak maintained that this required at least a 4K image, while Quantel, busy in the effects equipment market, felt that 3K did the job.

Our third digital revolution?
Bob Pank# A little history the first digital revolution for the TV production and post industries started somewhere about 1972 and then involved introducing digital islands into an analogue world. The introduction of much more affordable digital VTRs such as Sonys DigiBeta in 1993 heralded the beginning of the end of analogue.

Cloudy NAB
Bob Pank# Those who arrived a couple of days before the NAB show opened had the unusual experience of cool weather, heavy grey skies and rain. The clouds had arrived in Las Vegas. No more softly softly on the cloud
Bob Pank# I can remember seeing graphic cloud symbols on computer system diagrams many years ago. So the idea of the cloud is nothing new. Indeed, just to prove it, the 10th (yes, weve already missed nine) annual Cloud Computing Expo (cloudcomputingexpo.com) is coming up in New York in June and the organisers claim that cloud computing is now a $120Bn market. So why are the television and media industries only recently becoming interested?

Cloud Matter Part 1 - Fear of Fluff!
Bob Pank# Although Im writing this article in the usual way, by sitting at my desk and tapping on my keyboard, the only app running on my computer is the web browser. I can see the article on the screen but have no idea where its being stored. Still I have every confidence that it will be instantly recalled whenever I want it.... provided my modem and Internet service hold up. This is on Google Documents and I am writing into the Cloud. The funny thing is that, for my requirements, its almost exactly the same as many other word processors except it automatically saves the document whenever I make a change.

3D Diaries Cameras: more for less
Bob Pank# There is plenty of guidance available about how to shoot good stereo 3D and the principles are quite easy to understand. Achieving good results takes good equipment and, maybe, the assistance of a stereographer and even a convergence puller... unless you are using one of those twin-lens cameras where most of the parameters are fixed except for the convergence point.

2011: 3D Make or break?
Bob Pank# Last year was predicted to be the year when 3D would leap forward or flop. History is littered with short periods of interest and development only for 3D to drop off the scene again. 3D Diaries has maintained that this time its different as now nearly all the right technologies are available the only missing link being a practical autostereoscopic screen.

Game, Set and Match
Bob Pank# It was only three months ago that this column hailed featured the new DVB-3DTV standard. But already there’s talk of a second version, or rather ‘phase’, as described by David Wood of the EBU in the new 3D Roundabout newsletter. In a way this is healthy. It shows just how fast 3DTV is moving and, whereas phase 1 is designed to work with existing 2D STBs, phase 2 will be designed to run on a new specification of specialist 3D STBs.

3D Post at NAB, Wimbledon, and more
Bob Pank# You may recall that last time 3D Diaries tackled the subject of post production in August 2010, it warned that the fix it in post habit was definitely to be avoided. This means shoot it correctly in the first place, as trying to fix errors, especially the 3D ones, in post can get very tricky and, may be expensive.

The 3D titling tango
Bob Pank# The further you look into 3D, the more it diverges from 2D. Titling, including lower thirds, on-screen burnt-in text and subtitles (aka closed captions) are common features of 2D TV and film presentations and so its not unreasonable to expect it to be used in 3D.

Does 2D to 3D really work?
Bob Pank# It is widely said that 3D has to be done well as, if its not, then it actually can hurt the viewer and give 3D a bad name. Certainly there have been big efforts to make good 3D, with Sky going to great lengths to ensure they set a high standard. Unlike the old 3D celluloid films, digital 3D can be a completely stable medium; it does not degrade with repeated showings and does have the tools available to make excellent results.

3D to see at IBC 2010
Bob Pank# IBC2010 marks the fourth year when the new wave of Stereoscopic 3D took hold at the show. Thats three years of time for development and implementation. While cinema is racing ahead, taking a good extra percentage of people at the door who pay a 3D premium price television in Europe is only just beginning. Sky is the pioneer for the UK, going on air in October soon after the show. This will, surely be a defining moment when 3D comes to TV not just for a special event but to stay.

3D diaries -Fix it in post. Dont go there
Bob Pank# The more I look into it the more scary 3D is. Researching for 3D Diaries shows there are so many pitfalls and traps that would be all too easy to fall into; enough to put people off the whole idea! The answer is simply to learn about the subject before seriously jumping in with both feet. Clearly it adds a whole new layer to all parts of the scene-to-screen chain. In each link there are traps to avoid, and avoid them you must, because getting it wrong produces unwatchable results.
