Stars of the show - A visitors view
Ben Sherriff Yesterday TV-BAY - Kit Plus came to East London's Brick Lane showcasing a roadshow packed with great seminars and kit to whet our appetites in advance of BVE in February. It was no great surprise that, for the DPs and camera operators at least the star of the event was the Sony PXW-FS7. Sony's latest large chip offering has been called by some the 'Canon C300 beater' and I have no doubt that as more of them come on stream and production managers and producers start to see the results they will be persuaded to move away from the trusty old C300.

Peter Savage asks: Is the 1980s vision still relevant today?
[author] In the late 1980s, the whole of the broadcast world changed for what, I believe, was the better. The BBC introduced Producer Choice, which meant that commissioners of programmes were for the first time allowed to look outside the BBC to make programmes.

4K is bigger than size alone
Bob Pank# It seems that numbers are a great eye-catcher and 4K was everywhere at NAB, and will be at IBC too. Here, of course, we are talking about a TV system with four times number of pixels of HD, namely a picture area of 3840x2160 for TV, or for cinema 4096x2160.

8 questions about QC and language-based tools for captioning
KJ Kandell Traditionally, broadcasters and others in the delivery chain must verify compliance manually by simply capturing and archiving content and then reviewing it if a complaint is made. Its a cumbersome, labor-intensive process that is prone to errors.

BNC: Is it at the end of the line?
Robin Palmer The BNC was probably widely accepted into the broadcast television industry because of its locking feature made possible by the bayonet lugs on the female connector. Also the connectors relatively small size.

19inch Racking, an evolution
N/A If you have ever worked with 19 racking you probably have the scars to prove it. From its inception in the 1930s to the present day the 19 rack has hardly evolved. Standards organisations, from BSI, ISO ANSI and DIN all have their own take on the 19 rack and, as you all know, you never could get that Dell server in the HP rack.
