State of the Nation - November 2018
Dick Hobbs - new There is an interesting seminar called Size Matters at the KitPlus Show – organised by the publishers of this fine magazine – at MediaCityUK in Salford on 6 November. It’s a talk by cinematographer Alistair Chapman on the way that camera technology is changing, and in particular the size of the electronic device which creates the image is growing.

Twenty Years of Transcription
Dom Bourne In 1998 Dom Bourne dropped out of university and started a business providing transcriptions to production companies. The company operated from his childhood bedroom and Dom hoped it would keep him in beer money for a year or two before he decided what he really wanted to do with his life.

Gaining insight in a fragmented broadcast world
Keith Bedford The proliferation of mobile devices, on-demand content and the fragmentation of viewing habits makes the task of measuring TV audiences and the level of audience participation a bigger challenge than ever before. While the ways that consumers' access content may have changed radically, broadcasters' need for an accurate view of who is watching what, when and how haven't.

The beat goes on... 4k, 8k and the continual need for T&M
Adam Schadle Just a few short years ago, 4k was the future, but now that 4k televisions and other screens are becoming more widely available, the format is careening toward the present. 4k is still an emerging delivery format, to be sure. After all, there are still places in the world that have yet to transition from SD to HD. But progress marches on. Even as were in the process of adopting and perfecting 4k production equipment, methods, and content delivery, were looking toward doing the same with 8k video, with certain large-audience events and special venue applications as a starting point.

Test & Measurement: Ask the expert
Alan Wheable There are basically two different approaches to capturing the Eye Diagram from an SDI signal. These are real-time capture (employed by Real Time oscilloscopes) and signal subsampling (employed by Sampling oscilloscopes such as the Omnitek Ultra 4k Tool Box). All broadcast T&M equipment will use one of these approaches to create the Eye Diagram using a variety of proprietary techniques.

In media monitoring, as in medicine, a quick fix is not a cure
Simen Frostad A man is rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack. The priorities of the medical team that treats him are clear: keep the patient alive, contain the damage to the heart as far as possible, stabilise the situation until the patient is out of danger. They work under the pressure of these immediate priorities, and with little or no information about the patients medical history to date.

EPG: Guiding content discovery
Keith Bedford Digital TV is something that we've become accustomed to, we don't think about how we search and select the vast volume of content that's now available to us, we just know that with the press of a button we can see what's on, record our favourite shows, series link them, select recommendations based on our previous viewing habits and pay for downloaded content that we then own.

Data visualisation: discovering and inventing new oppurtunities

Data security in the cloud

Evolutions in the media cloud with Bob Pank

Redefining the archive with Raj Patel
Raj Patel The entire broadcast workflow has changed dramatically in recent years. Predictably, its been a slow-process. The enormity of transitioning from an analogue to a digital workflow is huge for a variety of reasons - planning, testing, implementation and budget, can mean some installations taking up to two years to complete.

Is 4K the end of the line?
Robin Palmer In my TV-Bay April 2013 article I mused over the familiar BNC connector and was it at the end of its line as far as broadcast interconnections were concerned. Its been around a long time, the BNC was invented in the late 1940s primarily for military radio frequency and microwave interconnections but then became the standard for baseband video connection. However since digital video became commonplace its role has constantly evolved with the technologies needs.

Building a digital archive
N/A The search for specific content within masses of stored videotape once required a visit to the archive librarian, a great deal of patience, and some luck. Even if one was able to explain successfully the footage you needed, and if the librarian proved able to locate that content, there remained the possibility that tape degradation or generational loss had undermined the quality and usability of once-valuable images.

BVE 2012 in no particular order.......
N/A If you read TV-Bay regularly, you will already be aware of the main trends in video and audio product development. BVE 2012 reflected these very accurately, notably the ongoing transition to file-based content capture and the growing interest in compact cameras. A good way to identify hot new products at any trade event is to identify which stands are attracting the biggest flock of visitors. Lets look at some of the key BVE crowd-pullers.

What is high-performance data transport and why is it important
N/A High-speed transfer technologies help move the worlds digital assets at maximum speed regardless of file size, transfer distance and network conditions. And now that content-producing organisations and broadcasters are turning to cloud-based infrastructure as well as services for improved efficiency and scalability, the need for high-performance movement of data to and from the cloud is critical.

Thanks for the memory
N/A If I need to impress on someone just how old I really am, I explain that my first computer had 32kB of Ram. Then we go through the you mean 32 meg no, I mean 32 k routine. It does seem implausible that, while I managed to write letters on my BBC Model B, today I need half a million times the memory to bash out columns for TV Bay.

Back to basics asset management
N/A There are two things you should know before I start. One is that the strapline for my companys product, Mediaflex, is Beyond Media Asset Management. And the second is that I hate the term Media Asset Management because it has come to be meaningless. Too many people have used it to mean too many different things.

Post Production
N/A The global financial downturn is having a significant impact on every industry and television is suffering too. The programme budgets of most channels are being held or cut making the costs of producing content significant in the decision on whether programmes and series are aired. Yet the demand remains for bigger, bolder and more cinematic styles and effects in television programmes. The challenge to post-production is how to achieve these high production values but at the same time reducing costs.

The Loudness Issue in Todays Audio Systems
N/A Complaints regarding audio being too loud have always existed. For example, the change from a television drama with little or no music or sound effects and quiet dialogue to a loud commercial can be quite jarring and will likely cause the viewer to reach for the volume control. This can happen when listening in mono, stereo or surround sound.

Ancillary Data Monitoring in Multiviewers
N/A The broadcast environment has gone through enormous change over the last decade, creating challenges in the management, storage and broadcast of material. Factors contributing to these challenges include the increase in the number of channels with the move to digital, the introduction of various aspect ratio and video standards with the transition to HD, and the necessary evolution from tape to file-based workflows.
