Immersive Audio
Jon Schorah - new In 2012, the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign burst onto the scene, initiating a new wave of public interest in sense-enveloping immersive experiences. 5 years later, the consumer reality is mixed with some very public let-downs like Google Glass (which is coincidentally enjoying a re-birth at the time of writing, now as a technical tool in the workplace), and other technologies such as Dolby Atmos® becoming almost commonplace experiences. What does this mean for the audio professional and how is the near future shaping up in 2018?

Who really benefits from the Cloud?
Jayson Tomlin - new The transition to "the cloud" in our industry has been challenging. Why is it so important to have cloud technologies? What do customers really expect? The term "cloud" has been used to such an extent that it has diminished the real and actual importance of what's really going on - off-premise compute power.

The importance of maintaining digital audio paths
Larry Schindel A portable, handheld, digital audio stream analyzer/generator is an essential piece of test equipment in the broadcast environment. It allows engineers and system integrators to quickly monitor and verify the composition, and integrity of, audio signals at any point from production all the way through the distribution chain.

A soft shift in Monitoring Solutions
Craig Newbury The technology supporting the media industry is evolving at a furious pace, making system flexibility a critical characteristic of any new equipment or infrastructure investment. Broadcasters and other media companies must adapt quickly if they are to benefit from changing content creation, management, and delivery models, but they can't afford to purchase solutions that meet only immediate requirements, and not necessarily those of the future.

Expanding Arqiva into HD playout
N/A ATG Broadcast recently completed a major SD to HD upgrade for Arqiva broadcast transmission centre at Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. The expanded system enables Arqiva to process and transmit four fully-operational 1080i HD channels as well as six new SD channels. It includes the installation and equipping of a server-based ingest suite, playout assembly facilities and four presentation desks.

Demystifying the black art of digital audio
Alan Wheable At the pure analogue end of the audio world (which these days is very narrow with much of the audio content being captured digitally) it is quite straight forward to check that an audio channel is present, that it sounds right and has the right levels. Likewise if the audio channel has hum or a buzz on it is relatively easy to identify the problem and fix it.

Issues in surround audio and new technologies to address them
N/A Surround audio and the encoding technologies, such as Dolbys AC-3 used to transmit it, have introduced new issues in maintaining audio quality. At a time when skilled audio personnel are getting scarce and budgets are shrinking new technologies hold the key to delivering top quality audio to viewers.

Summer of 3D
Bob Pank# Having put 3D to one side for a few months it was very interesting to jump back into the third dimension. With 3D not making the headlines much, if at all, you might be lulled into thinking it has faded away, but thats not the case. Many events are being shot in 3D, including the Olympics and, although there has been nothing happening that could be called a revolution, there is a great deal of evolution going on.

Testing mixed signals
N/A It is fitting that a lot of the avid readers of this article are broadcast manufacturers flying over the Atlantic to NAB in Las Vegas so I have a captive audience to influence with an open invitation to come and visit us in the North Hall N5015. Whereas the new product range has been designed for applications in traditional settings such as engineering bays, OBs and Studios, some of the unique attributes of the PHABRIX Rx range on show at NAB are very much targeted toward broadcast manufacturers. Hence the appeal I hope to the passengers attempting to drink the flight dry once again.

Whats new in video monitoring
N/A The great majority of video monitoring displays in any modern broadcast presentation facility are LED-backlit LCDs. Reliable, space-efficient and economical on power, they produce excellent pictures for all but the most critical applications, usually in conjunction with one or more multiviewers to emulate a monitor stack.

Whats new in broadcast test and measurement
N/A The test and measurement product category continues to expand as the broadcast business itself diversifies. Notable recent developments include higher resolution displays and a gradually increasing number of analysers which, having detected a fault, endeavour to fix it. No sign at NAB 2011 of any tablet-based test and measurement equipment but perhaps that is only a matter of time.....

Post Production Ask The Experts
N/A Its a familiar scenario: A client calls with an urgent transfer request. It may be a movie sourced at 23.98PsF that needs conversion for broadcast, and the client needs an HD version at 1080 50i with Dolby E audio and an SD program at 625 50i with PCM audio, as well. Or perhaps the content was shot at 1080 59.94i, but the client needs a 720 59.94p version for transmission. Or, maybe the client wants to replay a 1980s SD program series on a new HD channel. These jobs can become unexpectedly complex and time-consuming if content arrives in a less-than-ideal state.

BVE 2011 retrospect
N/A BVE 2011 had much of the buoyancy and buzz of an IBC. The organisers claimed an attendance of over 15,500 visitors and 240 exhibiting companies. Many of the UK-based stalwarts who make the annual pilgrimage to Amsterdam could be seen exploring the show, confirming that BVE is now taken seriously by mainstream broadcasters.

Junger Audio Helps Broadcasters Get To Grips With 5.1 Upmixing
N/A Television viewers who have invested in home cinema systems will already know how dreadful mono and stereo audio can sound when played through 5.1 surround sound speakers. Instead of being enveloped by carefully mixed 5.1 surround sound, viewers are, instead, subjected to unbalanced audio coming at them from unpredictable directions
