An Obituary to Timecode
Bruce Devlin - new A stoic and persistent character that stubbornly refused to change with the times, Timecode has finally passed on, but no-one has noticed. A long-lasting industry veteran, Timecode was brought into this world at an uncertain date in the late 1960s due to the needs of analogue tape workflows and the demand for synchronisation between audio and video devices. A joint activity between SMPTE and the EBU led to the work on Time and Control codes starting its journey to standardisation in the early 1970s.

What is Next for Broadcast
David Schleifer The Broadcast industry is always chasing new technology. Some of that technology is further than it appears to be, and some of it is closer to adoption than it seems. In part, early adopted technology is accelerated because of customer or business demands, and in the case of IP based environments, the driving factors are speed, cost reduction, and flexibility of workflow. To counterbalance these efficiency-based factors is a desire by content creators and customers to see more 4K HDR content on their new big screens. In some ways the push to deliver 4K workflows also makes the need to manage cost/performance even more urgent.

When a lens is more than just a lens

How the Cloud can be enabled as traditional broadcast workflows evolve
David Schleifer The Cloud itself is fairly simple, but for broadcasters it can be difficult to leverage. It isnt technically complex but broadcast still overlaps requirements that need real time, high resolution and quick turnaround solutions. Plus, this is coupled with the need to connect with dispersed geographic locations, reduce costs and access multi-format assets. As a result, broadcasters have moved away from asking the basic question what can I do in the cloud? to trialling projects and implementations are now underway or under evaluation.

The party is not over until the video is online
Paul Scurrell When we were introduced to the team behind Sensation dance events in Amsterdam they had one big question for Timecode Systems: could our SyncBac VR wireless sync and control solution theoretically make it possible for a high quality, professional 360-degree video of a live dance music event to be edited in the time it takes the DJ to fly to his or her next gig? Intrigued by what our solution could help them achieve, in July they invited us to film at one of their iconic dance music events. Billed as The Final it was a sell-out farewell party to mark the last Sensation event in Amsterdam.

The importance of storage
Jonathan Smith In recent years, viewing habits have shifted dramatically; online video is becoming the preferred option for the younger generation. But its not just millennials who are cutting the cord with broadcasters and traditional platforms increasing numbers of people from all age groups are abandoning cable and instead enjoying TV online. In response to this growing trend, platforms such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer are rushing to invest in fresh digital content, in a bid to satisfy their ever-increasing audiences.

Welcome to the world of filming The Island with Bear Grylls
Paul Scurrell How do you make a polished television show worthy of broadcast on Channel 4 when the camera operators are starving, dehydrated and sleep deprived? Most of them also have no previous experience of professional filming and are more concerned with finding their next meal than making sure they've got their cameras switched on ready to record. Navigating Unfamiliar Territory
Vijay Sagar Vinnakota The traditional broadcast model - where TV networks play content on a linear schedule, and viewers tune in on their TV sets - is under siege. Linear TV is not going away anytime soon, but the model is becoming less and less relevant. Thanks to the rise of OTT services, viewers have become accustomed to watching content when and where they want, on just about any device with an internet connection. For that reason, broadcasters must add an OTT component to their offerings.

The world is not flat
David Schleifer The world is all around us. We have a lot of cues that make us aware of how we fit into a 3D space. Many of these cues, senses and reactions are survival instincts. For example, the ability to hear someone walk up behind us, to see movement in our peripheral vision, a sense of how we are oriented when we move our bodies or swivel our head. All of this creates an overwhelming amount of data that we seamlessly interpret as we go around our day getting our morning coffee, driving, walking through crowds, diving into pools, and everything that we as people do in our lives.

The future of timing and timecode
Bruce Devlin It is SMPTE's 100th anniversary! I hope that all readers have had a chance to view the Centennial Video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN2yYrEFMFQ) and to contemplate that 100 years ago we were in the dawn of the cinema era, where different equipment used different frame rates, different sprocket sizes, different frame sizes and the concept of distributing and delivering content between different manufacturers was a real headache.

Increase productivity while editing
Terry Goyette Using non-linear editing software (NLEs) and digital audio workstations (DAWs) are staples of multimedia editors around the world. Many professionals use an NLE on a Windows PC or a Mac such as Adobe Premiere, FinalCut Pro, Sony Vegas or Avid Media Composer or edit music or sound with a DAW such as Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Logic Pro, Propellerhead Reason or others. Professionals are not the only ones editing. We are now in the age of prosumers (consumers using pro equipment) using HD smartphone cameras uploading to YouTube as well as hearing music produced on home computers with programs like GarageBand and sharing with their friends on social media. There are many keyboard shortcuts to remember, and not always easy ways to navigate these programs with a mouse or keyboard.

Ask the experts: Content readiness in time-deferred workflows
Sudeep Bose When focusing on the actual content itself, rather than the service, network or other components, the key is the readiness of content to be used. For instance, a piece of media must be syntactically correct in order to ensure that it causes no downstream issues in the workflow and that it will play and decode properly.

N/A Last month in the intro issue I described what I did in the past as a hobby and a hopeful branch of my career. Time-lapse is an integral part of what I do and I am eager to develop my skills in it. I had such a chance at the end of October when I got my hands on a Dynamic Perception Stage Zero 6ft Dolly track with MX2 Controller. I felt this was quite a feat of engineering but it had its flaws and wasnt always simple to use, but the results trump the ergonomic faults that my associates and I had when using it.

Real-Time Frame Rate Conversion in a Tapeless Workflow
N/A When content moved within facilities and around the world on tape or via live feeds, frame rate and format conversions were easily achieved using real-time hardware converters such as Snell's Alchemist Ph.C-HD. As broadcasters and content owners moved to more convenient tapeless workflows, which enabled them to lower their costs, save time and improve logistics, the frame rate conversion step remained a baseband island within the file-based processing flow.

Does 2D to 3D really work?
Bob Pank# It is widely said that 3D has to be done well as, if its not, then it actually can hurt the viewer and give 3D a bad name. Certainly there have been big efforts to make good 3D, with Sky going to great lengths to ensure they set a high standard. Unlike the old 3D celluloid films, digital 3D can be a completely stable medium; it does not degrade with repeated showings and does have the tools available to make excellent results.
