Still looking good
Dick Hobbs. The television industry is in crisis, as we all know. Experts everywhere are telling us that consumers want content on demand, wherever they are. Online and mobile platforms will mean the end of the broadcaster and the channel as a brand.

Budgeting and controlling costs
Den Lennie This is a very important aspect of running a production, and one you have to keep a close eye on. Its very simple; you have your actual hard costs in one budget and you have what youre charging the client in another. Lets say you charge the client £450 per day for the camera package, but the rental house is only charging you £350. Having those figures in separate budgets allows you to calculate your overall gross margin for the project.

Is working for free, training or a pathway to paid work?
Graham Reed I suspect like a lot of KitPlus readers I often have a look at a websites that advertise jobs, but mainly un-paid. I have frequently thought that these job offers are really just trying to get free or cheap labour for the benefit of the director/producer.

Moving voiceovers into the 21st century
Leigh Emmerson There was a time when the only way to get a voiceover for your production was by contacting a voiceover agent who would obligingly send over a CD or two full of voiceover sparkle and you and your client would choose one, schlep on down to a studio and pay a small fortune to sit on a swanky sofa and watch said sparkle record your script.

Dylan Ellcome The end of my third year of BSc Television and Broadcasting at the University of Portsmouth is drawing closer, meaning the end of my time at University. Several deadlines have come and gone, and my CCI management of Script Editing has slowed down. But I still can't comprehend this ending, as there is still much to do with several big deadlines left including my Documentary. But looming above it all is as always has been my Final year project.

Outsourcing for maximum efficiency
Den Lennie We filmmakers are very adept at wearing many hats. Producer, director, editor, cameraman, sound... it's the nature of boutique production. It can mean that you can make more money by doing more of the jobs yourself, but equally it can thin your resources out a little finely.

Training for media - who should do it?
Martin Uren Simple enough to ask, but any possible answer to the question of who should train those working in the media industries, or more specifically the moving image industries, is complex and involves many interrelated factors. I would like to explore the issues, and maybe present some suggestions on how we might do a better job of preparing and engaging particularly the new entrants into our workforce in training and CPD (Continuous Professional Development).

Education meets industry...
Bernard Newnham Heatherden Hall - the most famous country house you've never heard of. Famous because it has appeared in large numbers of British films from Goldfinger to Carry on Camping. Why? Because it's the original building at the UK's premier film studio - Pinewood. A fitting place, then, to hold a conference on media industry training.
