Eye to Eye: Video over IP
N/A Live video streaming via Internet Protocol is perhaps most familiar in the form of Skypes free-of-charge online videophone service. Skype is a very easy way for an on-location broadcaster to get a video contribution back to base. A safer and more conventional technique, as with a reporter-to-anchor interview, is to live-stream video via ones own IP encoder straight into the studio for immediate viewing over a terrestrial and/or satellite network. If time is not so critical, the story can simply be emailed as a file straight out of the reporters camcorder.

Closed Captioning Comes to IP and Mobile TV
N/A As mobile or IP-based TV becomes increasingly popular with viewers, so will the demand for closed captioning for the deaf or hard of hearing. Lawmakers are already flexing their muscles regarding this issue, with the U.S. federal government enacting regulations making it mandatory for broadcasters to supply closed captioning for IP and mobile programming. It will not be long before European legislators devise similar regulations. Broadcasters who arent prepared when these regulations become law may find themselves facing fines and other penalties. To avoid this, it helps to understand the basics of implementing closed captioning for mobile and IP-based television.

Are you out on the range
N/A The main parameters to worry about in any stereoscopic scene are the most negative and positive disparity values. These numbers are usually expressed in percentage terms rather than in actual screen pixels. The distance between the numbers is the depth range. The depth budget is the maximum value this range can be allowed without being too uncomfortable for the viewer.

Silly Plugger
N/A Exhibitions are generally noisy, uncomfortable places where the chances of learning something interesting are widely variable. NAB and IBC are must-sees, of course, but otherwise I am not a great fan of exhibitions.

No more softly softly on the cloud
Bob Pank# I can remember seeing graphic cloud symbols on computer system diagrams many years ago. So the idea of the cloud is nothing new. Indeed, just to prove it, the 10th (yes, weve already missed nine) annual Cloud Computing Expo (cloudcomputingexpo.com) is coming up in New York in June and the organisers claim that cloud computing is now a $120Bn market. So why are the television and media industries only recently becoming interested?

Matrox MC-100 Reviewed
N/A I have always liked multitools, leatherman, Gerber, Swiss Army. Amazing little all in one tools that can get you out a hole when you need. Its the same when out setting up a Live webcast, a multi camera event or simply assisting another crew, I always like to have a few useful boxes of tricks with me just in case.

Testing mixed signals
N/A It is fitting that a lot of the avid readers of this article are broadcast manufacturers flying over the Atlantic to NAB in Las Vegas so I have a captive audience to influence with an open invitation to come and visit us in the North Hall N5015. Whereas the new product range has been designed for applications in traditional settings such as engineering bays, OBs and Studios, some of the unique attributes of the PHABRIX Rx range on show at NAB are very much targeted toward broadcast manufacturers. Hence the appeal I hope to the passengers attempting to drink the flight dry once again.

Every Cloud has a Purple Lining.
N/A Cloud computing has been around a long time. I seem to remember right back in the 1980s the phrase distributed processing describing one, if not the first, evolutionary step towards the concept of the Cloud. I am not sure when it acquired the nomenclature Cloud but most people in IT have been aware of it probably for a decade or more. It seems that only recently has the idea caught on in a big way in media and broadcast.

STAYING AHEAD OF THE BBCS QUALITY CURVE
N/A As director and filmmaker for Poor Kids and Poor Kids USA, I faced some specific technical challenges. Both films were commissioned by the BBC, which only accepts high-definition footage shot in data rates of 50 mb/s or higher. Since we would be going into the childrens houses and other low-light situations, we wanted a small camera........
