NETWORKING AND THIRD PARTY CONTROL
N/A Since the advent of digital technologies, the way audio and video is controlled and transported around broadcast facilities has been constantly evolving in the search for greater efficiencies and improved workflows. Today, broadcasters are demanding more and more versatility and integration from their equipment, and in turn, the capabilities now available are leading broadcasters to reassess how they design studio complexes.

How location audio changed with the birth of reality TV
N/A In the twenty-plus years that Ive been a sound mixer/recordist Ive witnessed countless changes in our industry from the introduction of digital multi-track recording to the arrival of 5.1 surround sound. But the biggest, most dramatic paradigm shift Ive seen is much simpler than that and its a social thing.

NAB 2012 Kit Review used by BroadcastShow
N/A So pre-NAB we are all very busy organising interviews with 70 exhibitors over 4 days covering 4 halls and in our case around 28 miles. Late last year we developed an online interview booking system at www.broadcastshow.com which allows exhibitors to book one or more 15 minute slots, enter stand information and questions they may like asked during the interview. Over the month preceding the show the fill up and we are left with a spreadsheet of who to see and when to see them. Thankfully the slot booker is intelligent enough to know which days we will be in which halls so dashing is kept to a minimum.

Vegas Baby!
N/A So last month was NAB in Las Vegas, and I got to go! Now I'd never been to the States before. I really didn't know what to expect. Other than not being allowed in bars or casinos as I'm under 21. And trucks on the road, larger meal portions and a favourable exchange rate.

SOCIAL FINANCE AND LAS VEGAS : A WORLD APART OR ARE THEY?
N/A Last month we discussed crowdfunding in the context of TV and film production. Its funding again this month because, during our Look, Listen, Experience speaking tour, several people asked me whether social and/or community funding are potential sources of credit for businesses in our industry. It would be wrong, though, to ignore the NAB Show in Vegas so Ive included a summary about that. First, funding¦

Cloudy NAB
Bob Pank# Those who arrived a couple of days before the NAB show opened had the unusual experience of cool weather, heavy grey skies and rain. The clouds had arrived in Las Vegas. By the time the show opened they had gone but there was still a big one in the North Hall where I experienced my very first Cloud Computing Pavilion.

Gamut errors: Who cares?
N/A Gamut errors are the most common video signal problems. This is because colour television or cinematography depends on being able to represent every pixel on the screen in terms of red, green and blue. We want to deliver perfect RGB signals representing all the possible colours in our pictures. Virtually all display technologies use RGB primary colours to match the RGB colour sensitivities of the human eye. A gamut error occurs if we process video from a non-RGB colour space which overloads or creates negative value in one of the RGB channels.

Waste not, want not
N/A One of the most interesting comments I heard at NAB this year was from Gary Greenfield, the CEO of Avid. Picking up the topic of making the most of content across multiple platforms, he said nothing is left on the cutting room floor any more. That started me thinking about how technology has allowed us to get profligate, and whether we are now at a point when we need to turn back to being parsimonious.

Wireless Audio at the sharp end
N/A It's noisy, it's very, very hot, but then often it can be cold or raining but it's still noisy and everything has to be de-rigged and moved to another country, sometimes in a different continent, every two weeks did I mention it's noisy? Formula 1 motor racing has never been more popular witnessed at the tracks by thousands and watched on the TV by in excess of 500 million more and this audience expects and gets the highest quality coverage.

Planning communications for a large sports outside broadcast by any chance?
N/A Communications for the broadcast of live events are becoming more complicated and important than ever. On site, broadcasters only have one chance to grab the perfect image for the viewer with time being a crucial factor. The larger the event the more viewers it reaches and the higher the risk that something could go wrong. A reliable, non-blocking, high performance communication system is essential, but there are also a number of equally important factors to be taken into consideration before making a decision regarding your communication system. So what other factors should you consider when planning an outside broadcast?
