The highs and lows of histograms
N/A Histogram displays for video analysis probably followed those found in common computer graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop. This can be very useful in finding video signal problems that would be difficult or impossible to see with a conventional waveform display.

Loudness Monitoring: Complacent Wont Get You Compliant
N/A Stricter regulations across the globe, the worldwide need for standardized audio level loudness processing, the need for logging and graphing mixed with long-term records maintenance for compliance verification, and the convergence of SDI/IP and ASI technologies all make for a challenging time in the broadcast industry.

Take control with Helm
N/A Control and monitoring are two of the biggest issues faced in playout operations. Broadcasters and playout providers want to be able to select precisely the equipment that they need and probably more so than ever, are now able to very accurately do that. But this, combined with the fact that previously largely static devices are now empowered by the introduction of IT thinking glue technologies being a prime example creates an issue.

Ask the Experts Monitoring sound in the stdio
N/A Why do I need monitors? And why can't I just use my Hifi speakers? What does a good studio monitor do? So I just spend a load of money on speakers, stick them in my room and I'm Abbey Road, right? So how do I set my monitors up correctly?! So how does a speaker counteract these acoustic problems you've been talking about, in terms of design?

Next generation monitoring - in the studio and in the field
Kieron Seth# HD pan, tilt and zoom cameras are very popular in self-operated studios, conference rooms, theatres and houses of worship. Typically, PTZ systems are remotely controlled by RS-422 or over Ethernet, with video signals routed over SDI cable into the production desk. Previously, live monitoring was only possible via the switcher that could be as remote as SDI lines would allow (typically 300m). With the new AW-HE60, cameras can now be controlled and crucially - monitored over IP networks, whether over local or even wide area networks.

3d Screens
Bob Pank# Often exhibitions such as IBC and NAB can be summed up as progressive slightly better products but nothing really new. Sometimes there is a breakthrough such as Ampexs introduction of the VTR in 1956. The early years of digital production and post tools were rich in totally new things. At the time I worked at Quantel and seeing inventions like Paintbox and a DVE video page turn for the first time was truly exciting; I knew these would be game-changers. What they did was instantly understandable and easy to apply. So, you may ask, why should it be that we are many years into the 3D revolution of the modern era and everyone knows what we really need to make 3DTV come alive, but we dont have.

Part 2 following the Ravensbourne 3
N/A Last month in the intro issue I described what I did in the past as a hobby and a hopeful branch of my career. Time-lapse is an integral part of what I do and I am eager to develop my skills in it. I had such a chance at the end of October when I got my hands on a Dynamic Perception Stage Zero 6ft Dolly track with MX2 Controller. I felt this was quite a feat of engineering but it had its flaws and wasnt always simple to use, but the results trump the ergonomic faults that my associates and I had when using it.

Monitoring: Cutting the Wires
Kieron Seth# Teradek began the wireless monitoring revolution at last year's NAB show. Its Cube wireless encoders are no bigger than a pack of playing cards. They compress a camcorder's video feed into an H.264 signal for transmission to either a WiFi-enabled laptop, iPad or tablet or to a Cube decoder. Straight-away live, remote and affordable monitoring was born. At the same instant, low-cost miniature streaming devices direct to the Net was born.

Issues in surround audio and new technologies to address them
N/A Surround audio and the encoding technologies, such as Dolbys AC-3 used to transmit it, have introduced new issues in maintaining audio quality. At a time when skilled audio personnel are getting scarce and budgets are shrinking new technologies hold the key to delivering top quality audio to viewers.

Video Monitoring Essentials - By Den Lennie
N/A As a DP the video monitor you work with is one of the most important tools on set. I began my career in 1994 shooting television news for Reuters on Betacam SP and it was very rare that I'd get to use a monitor on location. As my career evolved I started shooting more considered pieces and used Sony 9" tube monitors all flight cased up. I shot the ITV travel show "Wish You Were Here¦?" for 2 years and we used to lug that 9" around the world with us just so we could playback the rushes in the evening.

Technical Testing Joins Forces with Visual Monitoring
N/A In the past, test and measurement equipment was designed exclusively for broadcast engineers. Vectorscope and waveform read-outs sketching out shapes on a scope were readily understood by technicians fluent in the language of signal analysis.

Matrox Microquad reviewed
N/A There's nothing quite like a bank of screens in front of you, showing all your video feeds coming in to the production system. The more it looks like the something from Star Trek the happier I am. However when you start to look at the cost of all those screens and especially if you are monitoring HD/SDI inputs, I have to admit a wave of despair gradually begins to flood over me. I simply can't afford lots of HD/SDI screens to monitor my feeds not to mention the space they occupy.

The cushion quotient
N/A I have just been to a conference organised by the Mobile Data Association. I was very grateful to the organisers for the invitation, as it is the sort of thing that appeals to me: some of the top analysts in the industry throwing out statistics and predictions.
