The challenges of media workflow automation
The media workflow challenge has never been more complex, and it's growing. In response exploding consumer demand for high-quality, engaging programming, media operations are under the gun to create content and deliver it to an ever-growing range of platforms and devices. Managing video assets - that is finding them, accessing them, and using them efficiently and effectively - is one of the biggest barriers to success in today's environment. |

Getting started with IMF
Content is still King, but only if you can get it out to the consumer. I have just had the privilege of doing a live episode of Bruce's Shorts at the EBU IMF Workshop in Geneva. It was a privilege because I was able to talk about real world issues in making IMF compositions rather than talking about the theory of IMF. I was happy that people laughed at the jokes but even happier that people were taking notes and came up to discuss practical solutions to these difficult problems. |

MAM needs to adapt or die
The media landscape has shifted dramatically over recent years. Content providers are under increasing pressure to deliver compelling content to multiple platforms. Also, the production and distribution of video is no longer limited to traditional broadcasters, which face rising competition from a range of media providers. We are also seeing a massive increase in video being produced to broadcast quality by companies using it for other purposes, such as marketing, site surveys, internal communications, and a whole host of other applications. |

Small post houses delivering a big service
In today's fast-paced world of video production, the importance of a well-organized, responsive media asset management system cannot be overstated. After all, time is money, and the more quickly people can find and retrieve the exact content they need, the more quickly they can complete their video projects ¦ and capitalize on the content.

Assets in the air
People everywhere are talking about "the cloud", as if it is somehow something (1) new and (2) intrinsically exciting. It really is neither of those things. In the IT world, software as a service (SaaS) has been around since the 1960's when organisations bought the use of mainframe software on a time-sharing basis. |

6 Misapprehensions of MAM
Implementing a media management system is considered to be a risky business. The perceived complexity, upheaval and perception of failure can be so daunting that the risk may seem to outweigh the reward. But, like so many business technologies, MAM have been transformed in recent years and it's time to debunk some common MAM myths. |

Challenges for MAM with varying production types
Many media asset management platforms are designed to handle the immense number of assets needed for today's fast-moving, content-heavy productions. Since every production is unique, each has its own set of asset management requirements and workflow needs. While the unique workflows vary, a common necessity for an easy-to-use interface with the ability to efficiently organize and manage large amounts of content is required, regardless of the type of production you are working on. |

Television is dead, long live television
After decades of operating within the same fundamental model, the walls around our world - what was the broadcast world, or "vertical", in marketing terms - are crumbling. NAB 2016 clearly showed this and IBC 2016 took it one step further: momentum is strengthening as we push towards an IP future. |

The true benefits of the media factory ideal
As an industry we know that to be successful in the new multi-platform, multi-format environment there are hurdles that broadcasters and other content owners must overcome. These include: the introduction of non-linear offerings, which require different services to be managed in parallel; the reduction of revenues from conventional linear channels, which increases output while reducing costs; access to content across multiple platforms; and integration of news and production environments and the business systems that control them. So how can this be achieved? |

The modern day media manager
As industry trends move towards all file-based workflows from production to post production, there are several concepts and traditional industry practices that need to be modified and adapted for the transition. This spans throughout the entire production process in order to ensure that all deliverables are being recorded, edited and stored within the requirements of the designated workflow. |

Do you have a MAM solution
One of the top questions I get asked at trade shows is, "Do you have a MAM solution?"
Well, yes. Of course. It's what we do; but thank you for asking. What you should be asking is, "What differentiates your MAM solution from the rest of the MAM pack?" |

Meeting the Challenges of Media Assett Management
It's been 20 years since Microsoft founder Bill Gates uttered the words "content is king," and never has that statement been more true in media production environments. And yet, ask producers in any high-pressure broadcast operation to name their biggest challenges, and you can bet that managing video assets - finding them, accessing them, and using them efficiently and effectively - is high on the list. |

Media Asset Data Models in MAM Systems An Evolutionary View
As I was working on a presentation I gave on the data models MAM systems are built upon, I realized that looking at the evolution of these data models was a nice way of explaining them. It only made sense to share it with a wider audience. By illustrating how media assets are tracked and catalogued within a MAM system, and how that model has changed significantly over time, I hope to provide a deeper understanding of the changing needs in our industry and how we can not only continue to address these needs, but also begin to predict and plan for new ones. |

Tapeless Workflows, MAM and Archive: Back to Basics
The broadcast industrys appetite for file-based workflows existed long before the technology required to implement them was available. With the emergence of cheap capture hardware, the continually decreasing cost of storage and the ever-increasing capabilities of inexpensive computing power, the transition from tape-based to tapeless workflows has finally become a reality. The primary impetus for this shift comes from a long proven economic motivator: its cheaper. |

UHD: a long road travelled
Theres no denying it, Ultra HD (UHD) is impressive and the clarity of image is captivating, but its going to take a while for UHD to become mainstream in the home. A fairly expensive large screen TV is a must to get the best picture quality and since the majority of the world isnt yet watching television in HD, UHD still has a long way to go. However, its an exciting technological innovation and solutions providers and broadcasters have to adapt to ensure that they are UHD-ready. It was no surprise when on-demand platform providers set the pace for UHD delivery last year. Netflix was the first to launch its UHD service with season two of its popular House of Cards series; Amazon followed suit at the end of 2014 and Sky and DirectTV are also now commissioning UHD content. |

Four must-haves for modern media workflows: Enhancing your MAM solutions
It's always been about the struggle to manage lots of assets and adapt your MAM to suit in the world of digital media workflows. In the early years, enterprise storage infrastructure couldn't keep pace with the demands of SD, so the first non-linear editing systems were turnkey solutions with proprietary file and file system formats. In the last decade or so, IT-based solutions have finally caught up, and open solutions for shared storage are now readily available at price points affordable for even boutique post houses. |

Parting the Cloud
Every so often a trend looms over the broadcast horizon that gathers pace so quickly it soon becomes the buzzword at every launch and trade show. A few years ago it was MAM and more recently stereoscopic; now the big buzz in town is the cloud. But despite its recent rise to fame in the broadcast sector theres still a lot of confusion regarding how manufacturers can develop and manage cloud computing technologies. |
