The Transition to a full end to end IP video solution
Brian Olson Most video professionals will agree that the future is IP. The question is, when and how do they make this transition? With manufacturers just introducing new IP products, many people are observing and waiting. However, the reality is that the move to IP is already rapidly taking place and is more transformational than the move from analogue to digital, SD to HD, or HD to UHD/HDR. IP will change the way that people interact with video, making it more flexible, more accessible, more scalable and will provide more opportunities for content delivery

Sound Devices: My Choice For Everything Audio
Darren Brisker Ever since I can remember, I have had a passion and curiosity for sound and sound recording. For the past thirty years, I have had the good fortune of turning that desire into a career as a production sound mixer working on incredible projects, including three of The Twilight Saga films. During my three decades in the industry, I have always prided myself on using the best equipment available, in order to capture the best sound possible. Equipment selection is critical to success, and the game was forever changed when Sound Devices entered the mix.

The evolution of vision mixers
Liam Laminman At the heart of any multi-camera production is a vision mixer or production switcher as some people call them. Its core role is the switching of different sources, primarily cameras, often VTs and sometimes incoming external sources such as remote feeds from broadcasters. Even for non-TV types, thats relatively simple enough to get your head round several different incoming video signals can be switched from one to the next. Vision mixers come into their own when you look at their secondary features of keying graphics, transitions and digital effects.

The production desk finally gets innovative
Kieron Seth# The video switcher (aka vision mixer) is at the heart of all live television, all AV and many a live webcast. But despite its core role, its remained essentially the same concept for decades, consisting of a digital video effects processing unit, matrix switcher and control panel.

How location audio changed with the birth of reality TV
N/A In the twenty-plus years that Ive been a sound mixer/recordist Ive witnessed countless changes in our industry from the introduction of digital multi-track recording to the arrival of 5.1 surround sound. But the biggest, most dramatic paradigm shift Ive seen is much simpler than that and its a social thing.

Innovation, harmonisation, simplification
N/A You could reasonably argue that innovation, harmonisation and simplification is a good motto for designers of any product to bear in mind. It is certainly true for mission critical monitoring, and it is what TSL has tried to do with its range of rack-mounted professional digital audio monitors.

Post Production Ask The Experts
N/A Its a familiar scenario: A client calls with an urgent transfer request. It may be a movie sourced at 23.98PsF that needs conversion for broadcast, and the client needs an HD version at 1080 50i with Dolby E audio and an SD program at 625 50i with PCM audio, as well. Or perhaps the content was shot at 1080 59.94i, but the client needs a 720 59.94p version for transmission. Or, maybe the client wants to replay a 1980s SD program series on a new HD channel. These jobs can become unexpectedly complex and time-consuming if content arrives in a less-than-ideal state.

Junger Audio Helps Broadcasters Get To Grips With 5.1 Upmixing
N/A Television viewers who have invested in home cinema systems will already know how dreadful mono and stereo audio can sound when played through 5.1 surround sound speakers. Instead of being enveloped by carefully mixed 5.1 surround sound, viewers are, instead, subjected to unbalanced audio coming at them from unpredictable directions

Mixing with the wildlife on Big Cat Live
N/A A crew of 73 travelled out from the UK for 6 days of BBCs Big Cat Live programmes from Kenya early in October 08. Most of us were flown in on single engine cessnas which took us from Nairobi across the great Rift valley & down towards Tanzania. From the moment we touched down on the rough dirt & asphalt landing strip in the middle of the Masai Mara we knew it was going to be a totally different experience to any other programme we had worked on.

Virtual Sets
N/A When I first started approaching people in the UK with Brainstorms Virtual Studio software I was surprised to have them shake their heads vigorously and explain that virtual studio systems were far too expensive and too difficult to set up and run Coupled with that was the lack of realism and whos using them?
