Covering the Winter Games for Broadcast
Mel Noonan This was written a few days before the opening ceremony so news arriving from the front line is of last minute angst for some of the tech teams who go out and perform daily miracles in such unuser-friendly locations year after year. Camera platforms erected in the wrong place, cables lost under a recent snowfall, cables eventually found but now destroyed by an avalanche...you know the kind of thing. All this and more just in the last few days. There needs to be medals for the tech teams.

Extensive, flawless and enjoyed by millions
N/A Due to the multiple locations of the London Games, coverage was inevitably going to a be a challenge, with locations throughout London and the South; some of them specifically designed and created for the events such as the main Stadium, Velodrome and Aquatics Centre, whilst clever forward thinking meant that existing famous landmarks such as Horse Guards could be transformed into historic arenas.

Gold all round
N/A
In my ramblings in the January edition of TV-Bay, I offered some predictions for the year, which included the following:
“Television coverage of the Olympics and Paralympics will be extraordinary, capturing all the skill and dedication, elation and heartbreak of the world’s finest athletes. But somewhere in 29 days of intensive, multi-channel broadcasting there will be one tiny error, and that will be all that the popular press focuses on.”
I cannot speak for the Paralympics as I am writing this before they open, but I can say that I was more or less wrong in my prediction for the Olympics. Because there was virtually no criticism of the television coverage, certainly in Britain.

CHASING THE OLYMPIC DREAM
N/A As the Olympics are over, and as it will soon be the end of the Paralympics, it is time to summarise the effects the Games have had on the country. The feel-good factor has been astonishingly high bringing with it a new or, rather, renewed pride in knowing that when it comes to putting on a jolly good show, we know how to get it right. Self-deprecation, humour, wit with even HM The Queen sending herself up muddled with subtle and not-so-subtle commentaries on modern life, all make outsiders think of us as intellectually rigorous and slightly bonkers. Its a fair summary, wouldnt you say?

Sport Pushes the Limits of Wireless Transmission
N/A With the London 2012 Games and the UEFA EURO 2012 European Football championships just around the corner, physical and mental endurance will be pushed to the limits. Those pressures also apply to the technology used to cover these events for the wider world because there is usually one, split-second chance to capture the action as it happens. Second place is for the first loser.

3D a Geographic Thing
Bob Pank# It may just be coincidence but, in the last week, two stories about 3D in Scandinavia have landed on the 3D Diaries desk. Of course two swallows do not a summer make but maybe there is a trend here, with some nations embracing the third dimension more than others.

Fibre Optics......the past, present and future
N/A Although there were some discoveries in the late 19th century that were related to light and its propagation though a medium, it was not until the latter half of the 20th century when technological breakthroughs occurred which has led to modern day fibre optics.
